I'm surprised to see no mention of the hypersensitivity of the crontols in contrast to the sluggishness and choppiness of the animations. Sure, if I play on a new controller it's fine but with the slightly worn controller that I prefer Niko acts like a directionally challenged and eternally confused man on a meth high. Every other game I own works fine, every other aspect of GTAIV works fine. Why the H*ll is footwork so fraked up?

Another critism of mine, the story (while competent) is far too thin to keep ineterest throughout the several hours it unfolds.

Every character is exagerated and one-dimmensional (except Niko and Roman, they have a whopping two). This is entertaining but it contrasts horribly with the new "gritty realism."

More problems with gritty realism: eliminates most of the "fun stuff," horribly contrasts with the hillarious TV shows and radio channels, makes Liberty City an utterly boring grayscale, little variety in weapons and vehicles, adds pointless "moral choices" (not a bad thing itself, just pointles, they add very little to gameplay and have no real affect on the world)

EDIT: I forgot to mention the multiplayer (probably because it's so forgetable). It's such a contrast with GTA's sandbox style that's it's like an entirely different game and I don't care much for multiplayer only games. Especially such a game with such clunky combat controls and poorly designed maps. It'd be great at a party to play cops n robbers or something but the thing is the game doesn't support local multiplayer and I don't even know about system link, and how many people have 7 other friends ('cause you really need at least eight) with Xbox 360's and GTAIV's and two routers and nine ethernet cables and enough TV's and enough power and enough space or ambition to set that up? Finally, the online interface is the absolute worst I've ever seen, it's almost like R* tried to make it bad.

My critique: a fairly good game, but it could much much better and it bairly deserves half the praise it gets.
I have only on comment to make. And it's about the boring greyscale bit. You are aware that Liberty City has never been the most colorful of places right? Even in GTA3.

It literally forced you into set pieces. In one mission, you have kill a bunch of gangsters to try and steal a truck. I picked off most of them from afar with my sniper and assault rifles, then saw the truck driving away, so I zoomed in and shot the drive...
Exactly the thing that annoyed me. It's more like Mario 64 in structure than an open world game: you can choose which mission to do next, but the mission themselves are completely scripted.

For example - in most chase missions it's impossible to destroy the vehicle you're chasing before it gets to some predefined point. RPGs will bounce off, shooting the tyres has no effect, any vehicles you park in the way will magically become weightless and get pushed out of the way. Turn up in a fast car and the van you're chasing will magically become even faster. I thought the point of GTA open world games is that I make my own story, not to force me into the developers' idea of a cinematic scene.

Edit: By the way, the truck mission you mention gets even worse. I grenaded everyone, leapt in a car and drove over to the truck. But you can't steal the truck, and the driver is unkillable even though he walks straight past you and gets in the truck as if you're not there.

I was disappointed for a few reasons like

1) No planes or Rpg elements

2) painfull side quests to pick up said "friend" to go drinking while your running from the cops in a jeep thats flying in to a bar.

3)almost to real, let me explain that, cars handle strangely compared to the other games makeing them slow/heavy in comparison and thats its so dark at night you would need super non existing vison to make out the cops/gang members that seem to have that vison as they rip though you

but besides all the problems I had with GTA IV its still a well done game aside from my own complaints.

First off, on the planes thing, where would you go with it? GTA3 and Vice city only had a plane for a few missions, and San Andreas was nearly the size of a state!

Second off, I'll agree with you to a point. I kind of miss being able to build up your skills, but not being forced to eat to keep up your weight is a good thing to me. (And if I never see the driving school again, it'll be too soon. Half of that crud was the most asinine thing I have ever seen.)

I like GTA 4, but I can't stop being amazed at the ammount of 10's it got, I mean even on the 360 alone there are MUCH better games than this one. I did find the game to be a bit "striped down" when compared to San Andreas and Vice City, I found that there isn't much to really do in Liberty City, plus GTA games should really start considering character interaction with NPC's (like talking to random citizens and other stuff) 'cause it's a shame that the only thing you can do with NPC's on any GTA game is kill them or run them over (not such a big request considering that Rockstar went for "realism" on this one, you can't even talk to the cab driver). But other than that I can't deny the fun I've had with GTA 4

Overall I thought the game was fun and had a lot of good things going for it but it was disappointing.

I liked the newer driving and the redesigned wanted system. I also really liked the fact that people didn't recognize you while driving any random car. When I wasn't causing trouble I could freely explore the city. That was not the case in previous games. For instance, when I had pissed of the Triads in GTA III I would always get shot at in Chinatown even later in the game driving through it with a random car.

Your initial point of no characters carrying over is an invalid one because those all belonged in the GTA III world (GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories). Their goal was to start a new world with new characters and a new story (which I thought was excellent).

I had several gripes with the game though.

The first being that the most dangerous thing in the game is crossing the street. You look left and right and see no cars and then start to cross the road only to get hit by a car that has spawned on the road.

The second problem was the time system. While bumming around the city, I liked the sped up virtual time but it made certain things ridiculous. Races that were 5 laps started at high noon and ended in the evening. Social activities requiring you to pick up a person within 'an hour' was impossible unless you were near their current location or hailed a cab.

The third problem I had with the game was the monetary aspect. In the beginning it was quite good as you were struggling to even afford to buy pants or a hot dog, but as the game progressed and you started to score big, there were no rewards for being rich. You can't buy all the cars and property that would be a good use of your funds. Even the clothing options are very limited (only 4 stores, with 2 of them being identical...).

The fourth problem I had was with the cars themselves. Some of it just didn't make sense. Brucie only gave you $1000 per EXOTIC car, but Stevie gave you three or four thousand for little shitbox cars.

The last complaint I have is with the in-game technology. The cell phone is neat but why can't I zoom in and use it full screen if I want. Some of the text messages were blurry and the pics of the cars that Stevie wanted seemed useless. The laptop in one of the apartments was also annoying. If you knew the website, you could find maps with the locations of all teh bonus stuff, but there was no way of transferring all that data to your map so you had to go back to the laptop every time to see where more of the stuff was.

Anyways, I have ranted enough.

I'm quite tired of the game, and I was annoyed at all the praise it was getting from the beginning. I'd rate it far below Orange Box, Bioshock and Halo 3. A world that's large in size, pretty looking, and THE SAME THROUGHOUT is not a good game environment. And online sucks, which bothers me because it could have been really good if they just bothered to organize it better.

And I swear if I hear the word "titties" one more time I'm going to start bailing out of the helicopter again.

To answer Foolkiller's point about the character's belonging to the gta 3 world, I understand that and if thats the direction Rockstar wanted to go then thats their perogative, my problem is that nothing was said about that decision in the pre release hype, and because of that i ended up spending money on a misguided pretence, as my main reason for investing in the game was to see the story continued. As i'm sure there are many other gamers out there like me I can only assume that the lack of information on the decision to start anew character-wise was purposefully witheld. Other than that i completely agree with you!

I was dissappointed, This was my first GTA game i've played in full (I played in the sandbox of my friends efforts before.) For one (like everyone stated) there is not enough to do in the city other than missions, it's too easy to loose the cops, and the game offers only short little nuggets on excitement in the missions.

Some good points in here, far from the "I hate GTA4 because it's cool to be different" sense you get in other places.

I wasn't really disappointed, but then this is all about expectations. The last GTA game I played was GTA3. I pretty much knew it was just a sandbox game in general with the missions tacked on. I play the GTA games as a way to just screw around and check out the story when I want to. I didn't expect GTA4 to be any different and that's what it was for me. Honestly I was impressed with the increased level of sandbox-ism in GTA4, simply because the city has a pulse of its own.

A lot of my friends have given me grief about how I don't like the "dating sim" or "ultra-realistic" elements in the game. They are thankfully optional, but I don't feel like it was time well spent - while watching tv or going bowling or whatnot is a nice addition to the game's immersion, I'm not sure if I really thought they were necessary.

I'd have to say that the Saints Row 2 trailer [http://www.gametrailers.com/player/34873.html], which parodies this, explains it better than me. I wasn't really disappointed, but the praise it got was a bit over the top.

The one thing I am a little disappointed about was that when you pull the e-brake it all of a sudden feels like you are driving on Ice and you slide sideways forever no matter how fast you were going I feel like that should have been adjusted before the final release. I know if you do it properly you still can execute e-brake turns it's just that the cars seem to react unrealistically when you don't do it properly.

disappointed? not at first...let me break down my experience into chunks:

Hour 1
"YAY! GTA IV SCHWEET! And I got all this cool gear with it, Boy I'm sure glad i traded in some games for this awesome!"

Hour 5
"Yay! GTA IV" however this time unbeknown to me I said in a less enthused slightly slavic accent as that was all I was hearing for the first five hours

Hour 10
Eye twitching frustration as I'm forced to drive all over town for the most asinine things. I eventually wasted money on cab fair to expedite the process, only to find out that when arriving at half of these destinations I needed to jack a bloody car for the mission. oh and "Shut the fuck up Manny!"

Hour 25
Glad to see Manny dead a few hours back, but this is when I discovered the Liberty City Minute achievement and panicked. "I can do this, I can do this." I can't do this

Hour 45
After being ultimately frustrated with starting every mission over at least twice as I was torn apart by indistinguishable blurs on even my flat screen, I finally beat the game. "Awesome...ok now what?"

Hour 60
"STOP FUCKING CALLING ME!" All I wanted to do was tool around the city now, do some side missions and what not, but my "friends" keep calling me to hang out.

Hour 65
Ok, so they stopped calling, but by then I've finally burnt out. I can't be bothered to go find all those damn pigeons, or stunt jumps, or wanted criminals. Lets try multiplayer finally.

Hour 70
Fuck that noise... I thought folks on Halo 3 were bad, this is ridiculous! And goofing off in free mode is just boring as hell as no one's there. Oh and I get new outfits if I rank up? I HATE SYSTEMS LIKE THAT, GO FUCK YOURSELF...UGH...I wish I had those games I traded in back... *turns console off*

So yeah, a bit disappointed...

I think they did a bad job of informing the consumers about it but they did in fact mention this several times over the past few years. I am not surprised that most people didn't know this in advance though as the pre-release hype was about the game and not whether it continues the other characters' stories. Many, many (and I mean MANY) moons ago when Vice City was being developed and released, Rockstar made it clear that Vice City is NOT GTA IV. They pointed out that although the game is new, the world was the same. They mentioned it again when San Andreas came out that the numbering system would not be correct because GTA IV would start a whole new world. Of course, San Andreas came out a long time ago and most people either never heard of their reasoning regarding the titles or it has been forgotten since.

I do however agree that they should have made it more clear recently.

Cheers.

I wasn't really disappointed because I never heve high expactations hen I first begin a game. However there are a few things to complain about in GTA IV. Socialising is pretty boring after a while. A lot of weapons are missing and speaking about weapons: why do they give me 5 grenades in a mission right after I spent money on buying 25 molotovs cocktails. I also don't like it that killing the Most Wanted didn't have any reward, or that you have to kill all 200 flying rats to get something.

As sad as it sounds in my geekdom, I recalled moments in the Initial D anime where the e-brake and regular brakes are used in tandem to create the right kind of slide. After figuring this out I figured out that depressing the regular brake after a quick tap on the e-brake gets me the "Drifts" I'm looking for. Not like it still isn't a bit overkill to watch you spin out at the wrong times.

I found this too. When Niko's walking normally he's alright (well sort of), but the second that you crouch it's as if he's moving from square to square on a checkers board.

And Honestly, who jumps like that.

GTAIV kicked Halo off my "Most Overhyped piece of crap I have ever had to put up with" pedestal. That is one hell of an achievement, believe me.
