Once again Escapist hello to you,

Reports from certain newspapers, say that most people will skip work or school to play GTA5 when its released in less than 24hrs. Is anyone here going to do the same or just wait until the weekend?

Don't worry your bosses won't be looking at this thread if you are planning to skip work.

EDIT: I've already seen people in the UK do it for what ever new Call of Duty that comes out, FIFA game and the very insane "line up for weeks in the freezing cold" for what ever new Apple device that comes out every six months so I wouldn't be surprised.
I almost did, and honestly wish I had of, but I have some stuff to finish off at work. Funny thing is my manager plays games too (PS3) and wouldn't have blamed me if I did (I've had a Monday off to enjoy a LAN party with mates before). Although I did come in alil late today due to staying up after the midnight launch >.>

EDIT: To clarify, I wouldn't have called in sick, I would have just asked for the day off.

Luckily for me, I wouldn't have to skip. Of course, I wouldn't skip it anyway, since I'm a rather terrible student and can't really afford to miss any classes. I don't think I've ever skipped any classes due to the release of a game. I did, however, fall ill the day Call of Duty: Black Ops was released, and the next day people were joking that I stayed home to play it.

The only console I had back then was a PS2, and my computer was almost 8 years old.

I have the day off basically because there is no school for my kids. But as my kids will be home with me all day, I can't play it even if I bought it. And I would only be able to play it after the kids are in bed and even then with the sound turned down. I will wait until the PC version comes out.

Nope. I have my pre-order logged with Amazon so it'll arrive on release day, but Tuesday evenings are my online clan's "FPS Night" so I won't get around to playing it until after work on Wednesday.

And - although I know I'll sound like a sanctimonious ass for saying this - paid work is the driving force of adult life, and although there are some things in life (weddings, funerals, etc) that deserve a day off work, the mere release date of something as petty as a computer game does not rate. At least with people that have their priorities in order anyway.

Nope, I have the day booked off, but that's because I'm actually going to the doctor's after being sick for 11 days and not knowing why. As many posters have said, I can't simply take work off for a game, have too many costs and obligations

I honestly think it's disgusting that somebody would even consider skipping work for something like this.
People do it for Call of Duty, FIFA or whatever new iPhone comes out. So really i'm not surprised.
I have the same opinion for if they do it for those games. I would feel the same about any non-legitimate reason really. It shows a complete lack of maturity and responsibility and a complete lack of consideration of the effect it might have on other people. If you are ill, fine. If you need a personal day, that's fine too.

Before I went to university I used to work 8am-5pm monday to friday. That's a huge fucking part of my life. By the time I got home, it was 6 and time for dinner and after dinner I would have about an hour before I got exhausted.

So when a game I loved came out (which was rare) I would treat myself to a day off. Why? Because I was working my arse off. What the hell is wrong with taking a rostered day off to have a relaxing day doing something I love and enjoy?

If I skipped work I would get in a lot of trouble. I mean, it is AWOL, and is a court marshable offence as an officer...

Not worth it!

Some people are.

But I'm a member of the glorious PC gaming master race, so I won't. Even if I did suddenly change my mind about consoles, I would get a PS4, not a current gen console and would wait for the inevitable, vastly superior next gen port.

I did take a holiday around the release of Starcraft 2. But I did have other reasons. Otherwise I just don't get hyped enough to buy a game on release.
A mixture of this and simple... Maturity? Or desperation?

My degree is costing me tens of thousands of pounds. I would not deliberately miss a second of it. Last year I put work infront of my now ex girlfriend (Different reasons) and I simply would not change my mind around for a game. When Watch_Dogs comes out, sure, I am going to play the fuck out of that game. But not within 48 hours of an essay being due or an exam, not after 1am if I have a class before midday (Since I cycle I need time to have breakfast and wait for it to settle. In that time I might be gaming, I might not.)

If I manage to get a job this year, in this economy, I would not skip that for anything. Hell, I am already worried about the potential strain on my life a job could add.

I mean, I just do not understand how fucking juvenile you can be. Its just a game. It might be a good game, but it won't become a bad game if you wait until the weekend to play it, or if you can only sink a few hours into it at a time. Life keeps going and the world turns. I have never really cared that much about things.

I mean, I never went to a Harry Potter midnight release (And I was seriously slap bang in the target demographic.), I might like my iPhone but its a generation old and I have no intention of fixing that, not until it breaks, and I would not queue to throw money at someone. Since I am a PC gamer, I don't have to go and queue for things, I preorder and preinstall if something really grabs me (Rome 2, Civ 5) but I have plenty more things to do.

Meh.

tldr;

I am a PC gamer so I couldn't miss work to play it even if I wanted to but the very idea of missing work for a game, letting people down, losing money and the like is genuinely pathetic in my eyes. I would not miss a class for sex, I would not miss a class for a good book, I would not miss a class unless something genuinely made getting there impossible (Sleep disorder being a champ for that. Spraining an ankle and being unable to ride would be another nail in the coffin.)

I mean, if you do not turn up at work you are letting everyone down. You are making their lives needlessly harder. When working before people missing days without a good excuse pissed me off to no end.

And if you skipped work to play a game, that aint a good excuse and you have firmly put yourself in the "Asshole" category in my eyes.

No, I like my games but I wouldn't skip work and I definitely wouldn't lie to my employer and call in sick to do so as I've seen others do. I hope that those who lie for it get found out and fired.
Skipping classic is irresponsible as well but at least you're only dicking over yourself if you do that.

I had to look up the difference between skipping and taking vacation because im a weak swiss english-noob. Glad i did that before posting, would've been horrible otherwise.

OT:

Just dont skip anything just for GTA. Not only will the hype subside after a few hours (like it allways does), you also risk your Carrier and / or trust of your Coworkers. I also agree with some of the previous posters, games are extra fun if you play them to chill out after a hard day.

And if you really cant wait, take some vacation days. I took the afternoon off when Rome 2 came out, completely legal. If your Boss isnt a total jerkwad, it should work.

Well, firstly, I did have other reasons. My dad came out of hospital and I wanted to be around to help.

Secondly, it was my holiday allowance. I take it every year. It's required by law. It's my time and I can do what I want with it.

You taking holiday time to play a game?

Fair enough. That is logical.

You just taking time off, like the people who claim they will feign sickness, for a game? Scumbag.

Please note man, I was... Agreeing with you. The PC gamer bit. I did not intend to antagonise you and I am sorry if my thoughtless post did. Seriously. Taking time off to look after a parent is worth it. Taking holiday time is something that people do every year.

Its the people who, like I said, are feigning illness and stuff for a game. Now, whilst I have no issue with taking holiday time to play a game, it is taking surprise time off FOR a game that is the problem. With holidays you warn people in advance aye? (Only been on shitty 0 hour contracts and part time work.) so it does not fuck over your coworkers.

Randomly deciding to be "Ill" so you can play a game, that is both incredibly immature and will fuck over your coworkers. That said, if you were working with me and said that you took time off to look after a sick parent I would have no issue.

Although I still hold that taking a vacation JUST to play a game is a little bit immature. Taking a vacation for other reasons and playing games during it? Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Playing games a hell of a lot during vacations? Nope, doesn't bother me.

But the very concept of taking a vacation TO play games... Yeah. That bothers me. For some reason that seems incredibly immature.

Even though now that I think about it is no worse than just playing games a lot during a vacation. Hmm. Even though I accept that... it still screams immaturity. Huh. I gotta think about that little conundrum.

Yeah, I've heard of people do it for a lot of games, most prominently for the new Call of Duty games, hell, when I was in high school for the release of Modern Warfare 2, I heard someone in the year below say in all honesty to my form tutor "I've heard that If you buy the new Call of Duty game the school will let you have the day off to play it.", I must say I have never heard or seen someone laugh as much as my form tutor on that fateful morning.
