Guild Wars 1 or 2

I've never been a fan of MMO's. The main thing that put me off them was always the monthly fee, why should I keep paying for a game I have already bought? So anyway i recent installed Windows 7 on my Mac (Heresy I know) so I could play Dragon Age and some other games on steam. I decided to give the Guild Wars demo a try and I'm actually really enjoying it. A £12.99 one of payment seems like a good deal to me, this is a the kind of game I can not take too seriously and just play for a little bit every now and then.

The problem I'm facing is that Guild Wars 2 is coming out soon (2010/2011 according to wikipedia). So do I buy and keep playing Guild Wars and when the second one comes out ignore the character I've spend a few months playing as and start new on Guild Wars 2? Or just wait till Guild Wars 2? I know that I won't probably wan't to play both games when the second one is out.

I'd recommend getting Guild Wars to get into the swing of things, then just buy Guild Wars 2 when it comes out. You'll more likely than not be done with the campaign in GW1 by the time GW2 is released.

I spent a hell of a lot of time of Guild Wars but stopped playing around a year ago. Thing is, I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty dead now, compared to how it used to be anyway. I've done everything I want to do on it but I did have a great time, but like I said a lot of the community has gone. It may be worth just buying one of the campaigns (I recommend Nightfall) to start and then buy Guild Wars 2 when it comes out (which I am pumped for!)

Guild Wars is well worth playing but at this point you will probably be playing most of the content as a single player game unless you can get someone to buy it with you. I'm guessing that Guild Wars 2 will give the full experience at launch if everything goes well.

Do we have an active Guild Wars group or guild here? Never checked.

I had already pretty much accepted the fact that if I played the first Guild Wars i'd be doing it solo.

Not too sure. As of right now GW seems to be mostly about getting titles and such to send to GW2. But if you like GW you could always play it.

GW is my favorite game of all time so I'd definatly throw in a reccomendation. The Steam price is actually pretty steep considering that the game is over 5 years old and you can pick up the game on ebay for a couple of pounds, I recently bought Factions for my buddy for £1. I've got around 3000 hours out of it over 5 years and it is still well supported with new content and updates so it's worth getting.

If you have the EotN expansion pack, yes. Not sure if you can get many of those by GW2, though.

I'd say get it, GW1 isn't the type of game where you need to spend months crafting your character. You hit the level cap at lv20, and the "best" armor is only different in terms of appearance. If you get Eye of the North, you can get rewarded for various achievements accomplished in the first GW, but I don't think they'll be anything more than a minipet, or a title. The game focuses more on customising your character, and using various skills to pewpew as a party, it's most enjoyable when you're playing with a full group, but you don't often group up now which is a shame. The campaigns are fun though, and the environments are the most varied I've ever seen in a game, it's worth it for that alone.

I've just started playing and I've heard that completing something in GW1 gives you something in the second one. Don't know if it's true or not.

But It's cheap enough to keep you content till the second one comes out anyway so get buying!

Nightfall has the best storyline and characters of the three campaigns, in my opinion, so that is a must get.

Well you'd be basically solo-ing GW if you got it.

I'd say get Prophecies or Factions (Nightfall is literally impossible to solo) to get into the swing of it all.

Yeah I'd recommend GW1, since it's pretty much dirt cheap on steam (though I'm not sure if EotN is there too). And unlike a lot of MMOs it can be very solo-friendly with henchmen and heroes. You might suck at first before you get the hang of how decent builds are created, but when you get better you can do pretty much everything with heroes. And of course the lack of subscription fees means you never feel the pressure to justify your money by playing it a lot - you just pick it up whenever you feel like it (the main reason why people keep coming back even after 5 years).

Someone probably mentioned it already, but if you buy EotN expansion you can get nice cosmetic items for some of your titles/pets/weapons/armors/heroes that will be available in GW2.

Obtaining titles and such in your Hall of Monuments in EotN goes towards unlocking items for Guild Wars 2.
