Hi everyone,
Now that the game has been out for awhile, what are your opinions on it now that the hype has died down? Was your experience with it enjoyable? How is the lasting appeal?

Thanks!

Edit: I have no interest in PvP

I just started playing a couple of weeks ago, so I can't really comment on the lasting appeal. The general consensus seems to be that if your goal for MMO playing is to have an elaborite series of end game group runs/raids, you're going to be disappointed as there's only one real (yet enjoyable) option for that. The PvP is generally considered very solid though World Vs World Vs World suffers from a lack of balance as do the classes in general (for both PvE and PvP).

Running through it now, I'm having a ton of fun except for one thing. Some of the dynamic events (part of what replaces standard questing in other MMOs) are pretty much impossible unless you've got at least a handful of people in the area, and many of the areas don't have that sort of population anymore. Most of the population is at end game doing whichever end game activity they prefer.

I can probably answer sther questions too if you've got some specifics. :)

I'd recommend it. It's probably one of the best MMOs out on the market right now. It did have some trouble keeping my attention but that's PROBABLY because I have the attention span of a fly on speed. But the lasting appeal is GREAT. i keep going back to it for a couple hours every weekend

I'm not really sure what I expect from the endgame, but I've never had an interest in PvP, unfortunately.

Too bad about the population spread, but I suppose that's just what happens in most MMOs lol.

It's still quite expensive, then again no sub.

I heard it had some focus on PvP before release, how does it work exactly? And is the imbalance between classes widely perceived? Are there factions with different classes?

If you have a solid case of altitis, then go for it. It's the game for you. If you want a solid end game with patient players that have the ability to work in an organised group to take on a challenge much larger than you, then this is in no way the game for you.

Guild Wars 2 is pretty much a single player MMO that just happens to have a bunch of other people running around and shitting up the local chat in any given zone. With the occasional elite monster that you might get lucky enough that other players will coordinate with you long enough to bring it down. Which is rare unless it's the same event level cap players spam over and over for points.

If you love exploring, GW2 rewards you nicely for that. I found myself leveling way too fast just by running around and getting 100% completion for zones. There is no level scaling, it takes roughly the same amount of experience to level from 9-10 as it does from 59-60 so you'll find yourself ending up back in level 15 zones when you run out of areas at your level and demolish your way through the quests and events because even though your level and bas stats level down, your equipment does not.

The game is extremely broken in balance in PvP and WvWvW is just a zergfest. Whoever has the most players wins as you just find groups of players will just run at each other and hope they happen to live. The character combo system is sub par and rarely used except on coincidence.

Honestly, I found GW2 to be the very definition of a theme park MMO. You're not on rails but it's an entirely controlled experience. There is absolutely no penalty for death and the skill ceiling for every class is extremely low. Having all abilities available to every class from level 1 makes your character feel like they never grow and makes them feel very monotonous by level cap.

In short, I didn't like GW2. I thought it was very boring and missed the point of an MMO - community and teamwork. If you don't like MMOs and want a multiplayer RPG, GW2 is probably for you. It requires no dedication and characters level quickly so if you love making alts it's probably a good game for you.

It is. The good thing is there's level scaling throughout the entire game, so if you fall in with a good crew, they can come help you with events and will be scaled down to the level of the area you're in but will get drops in accordance with their actual level. Most times it's probably not worth calling for help for a dynamic event though since the big group stage is usually the last one and it'll only last a few minutes with a decent group.

If there is one common complaint about GW2 it's that the end game is lacking, so if you're not someone concerned with end game, you'll likely have a great time.

I'm playing it right now and I must say, it is the best MMO I've ever played.
As someone who always plays solo, the automatic grouping is a huge help and fosters co-operation, also you lvl up faster than you can explore everything, I hit lvl 60 while still in lvl 45 zones.
There seems to be very little grind (or at least, I haven't noticed it) and the crafting system is pretty neat.
Overall, I'd say go for it.

I bought the game on release and had a pretty fun time with it, stopped playing a couple of months back as felt there was something lacking (that or I'm mmo'd out) but for the most part if you can buy the game for a decent price it's well worth it.
Even when you reach level cap there's still a tonne to see and do without having to join serious guilds, go raiding and all of that.
It depends what you're looking for I guess, as a solo experience (with a casual guild for the odd team up) I found it fun and worth the money.

The world looks fantastic and although the main story is a bit, well, lacking in drama (for me anyway), I enjoyed the ride. defo worth a shot.

PvP comes in two flavours; World Vs World Vs World (basically, 3 servers battling it out in a persistent map for control) and an organized 5v5 mode. Balance in WvWvW can be fairly even or terrible, depending on the match up. Some servers just have more players and more skilled/experienced PvPers, and it's a bit of a constant rout. In Org PvP, it's a lot better from what I've gathered.

Class balanced is an issue with 3 classes consistently called out as everything from just average to terrible. Not a big deal at all in standard PvE as even the "lowly" classes are fun and can handle themselves well enough. In organized grouping, you may run into some resistance if you're running a certain class and it's one of the weaker ones, but if you're running at that level with the desure to be one of the best, you'll probably already be well aware of your classes shortcomings. Many of these issues are actually less prominent in PvP where combat is more about tactics and less about burning down giant HP sponges as quick as possible. As in all MMOs, though, I'd imagine it won't be long before classes get a balance pass anyway.

No factions at all. Any class can be used by any race and gender. By the overarching storyline, all of the races are banding together (even if they don't always like/understand eachother) to stop the resurrection of the great dragons.
