I have my Springfield Arms 1911A1 .45 ACP right next to my bed, but I wouldn't want it under the pillow per se.
Same gun same place my friend. I also have a modified Mossberg 500 12 gauge, and a Winchester model 94 .30-30 rifle in my room.
Nice. I have a vault that has a .308 Palma modified Winchester 70, 2 remington 12 guages, an old Sears & Roebuck pump 12, and a 7.62x39 SKS. Also, enough ammunition to defend myself from most third world nations.
Not bad, in my gun room a have 3 more 12 gauges, 2 .45 revolvers, 2 .38 special revolvers, a .25 auto pistol, .22 rifle, .223 mini-14, .22-250, .45LC rifle, and a .243 SRCM (Super Rock Chucker Magnum).
We should hit the range. I haven't shot since last summer, and my trigger finger always gets itchy for practice through the winter.

Springfield XD .45, under the pillow.
Protecta under the bed.
The Springfield XD .45 has all the stopping power and psychological impact that a .45 caliber handgun provides, but with added safety features that make it ideal for under the pillow.
Even has a Deadman's trigger, so it can't be fired unless you're holding it.
The Protecta is semi automatic shotgun, with a nice wide target area to clear the room with.
No pumping, just roll out of bed, pick it up clear some space.

Under the pillow? Nothing, because anything under the pillow is pretty much guaranteed to fall down the back when you need it.

On the nightstand, though, is another matter. (Or, as I once did, in 5.11 Tactical BBS pouches attached with sticky-backed velcro.) I'm currently in a country that doesn't believe in self-defence, and when I lived in South Africa I wasn't there long enough to get a firearms licence, but batons and stuff I have/had. So, my ideal nightstand:

- Smith & Wesson M&P chambered in .40, with one spare mag.
- 5.11 Tactical LightForLife PC 3.300 torch. (I have a UC 3.400 in my Land Rover. Brilliant torch.)
- Flexicuffs, just in case.
- Mobile phone.
- ASP 21" expanding baton.
- 3" folding knife or Scarab cutter - never carry cuffs without a way of removing them quickly.

One method I've seen used which seems to work well is to have a set of body armour pre-kitted, so everything's ready to go in the case of an emergency - just slip the vest on and it's done.

O'course, here in Sweden there's little call for that kind of arsenal - but in South Africa (where my wife's from, and where we hope to move back some day) it's generally wise to have access to some sort of self-defence weapons. So in that spirit, here's what's in my wife's nightstand:

- Big moer of a combat knife.
- OC incapacitant spray.
- Stun gun.

EDIT:

While I am fond of the 1911 series I think I should name something else for originality. How about the new Military and Police handgun [http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg/usa/sw-military-police-e.html]? Does anyone with actual experience have any opinions on this weapon?
I had the great pleasure of putting a few hundred rounds of 9mm through one while I was down in South Africa. And oh, it's a lovely gun. Small, accurate, light... Chambered in .40, you've got 15 nice big rounds ready to go. Striker-fired on a nice crisp trigger pull, very safe, and with adjustable grips.

My second time firing it (and, incidentally, the first time I'd had a chance to go shooting in seven or eight years, not to mention just my second time firing handguns bigger than .32 - there is a reason the accuracy's not great), at a range in Durban:

A mass accelerator cannon for a dreadnought class ship? (Mass Effect).
I may need a big pillow, but I can be sure to ruin someone's day, somewhere, sometime.

I need to go listen to that speech again...

Jeez, it's like you're trying to out-man each other.
What comes next? Does one of you have a tank in your garage? Or a hand cannon?
..
Oh lighten up, reader, I was only kidding.

OT: I would rather have none. Firstly, because it would likely make my pillow more uncomfortable, and also that I'd worry about it going off.
I wish I had an M1A1 Abrams in my garage. Though I doubt it would fit.

I would settle for the portal gun, but since I wanna sleep comfy, I'd have to settle with whatever small firearms they have... Glock maybe? or M93Fs

I wouldn't have a gun. I'd have another pillow, to smother them with...

That's awesome. I hope to have that kind of open, expansive space away from people when I finally settle down.

A Derringer. Even if it goes off straight in the direction of my head, it won't kill me.

I currently have a bowie knife on the table next to my bed, but when my new gladius (I have one already, but the new one is sharped and full tang so tis truely battle worthy) arrives it will takes its place.
Guns indoors is not a wise idea, especially large caliber ones like a S&W 500. It will go through your target, and the wall behind him, and anything on the other side of said wall. It will also make a very loud noise, much louder than it would be outside which is very likely to cause severe ear damage (again, the larger the caliber, the less you will be able to hear afterward). If there is more than 1 robber, they will know exactly where to find you. If they are close enough, they'll arrive while you are still disorientated from the ear shattering bang.
Though you'll be at a disadvantage if the robber has a gun, a bladed weapon is better. Quiet and a lot less risk of injuring someone you don't want to (a bullet going through a wall has a good change of deflecting, possibly right into one of your children). Plus you don't have to worry about reloading or running out of ammo. It also leaves a bigger hole.

I can't legally own a weapon in this country, nor would I need one considering our neighbourhood is so ridiculously safe...and most people probably don't need one anyway.

But for the sake of argument - an M1911. I dunno, I think it looks cool, seems pretty reliable, reasonably powerful too...I don't know much about guns, to be honest.

I want a gun that feels as soft as my pillow.

Guns are uncomfortable to sleep on, and probably quite unsafe to have in bed with me D:.

A Portal gun, what else?

This has probably been said by someone else already but I don't care. I want a Portal gun.
