Under the pillow? Nothing, because anything under the pillow is pretty much guaranteed to fall down the back when you need it.
On the nightstand, though, is another matter. (Or, as I once did, in 5.11 Tactical BBS pouches attached with sticky-backed velcro.) I'm currently in a country that doesn't believe in self-defence, and when I lived in South Africa I wasn't there long enough to get a firearms licence, but batons and stuff I have/had. So, my ideal nightstand:
- Smith & Wesson M&P chambered in .40, with one spare mag.
- 5.11 Tactical LightForLife PC 3.300 torch. (I have a UC 3.400 in my Land Rover. Brilliant torch.)
- Flexicuffs, just in case.
- Mobile phone.
- ASP 21" expanding baton.
- 3" folding knife or Scarab cutter - never carry cuffs without a way of removing them quickly.
One method I've seen used which seems to work well is to have a set of body armour pre-kitted, so everything's ready to go in the case of an emergency - just slip the vest on and it's done.
O'course, here in Sweden there's little call for that kind of arsenal - but in South Africa (where my wife's from, and where we hope to move back some day) it's generally wise to have access to some sort of self-defence weapons. So in that spirit, here's what's in my wife's nightstand:
- Big moer of a combat knife.
- OC incapacitant spray.
- Stun gun.

While I am fond of the 1911 series I think I should name something else for originality. How about the new Military and Police handgun [http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg/usa/sw-military-police-e.html]? Does anyone with actual experience have any opinions on this weapon?
I had the great pleasure of putting a few hundred rounds of 9mm through one while I was down in South Africa. And oh, it's a lovely gun. Small, accurate, light... Chambered in .40, you've got 15 nice big rounds ready to go. Striker-fired on a nice crisp trigger pull, very safe, and with adjustable grips.
My second time firing it (and, incidentally, the first time I'd had a chance to go shooting in seven or eight years, not to mention just my second time firing handguns bigger than .32 - there is a reason the accuracy's not great), at a range in Durban:
