It's funny because it says directly in the article that he wasn't charged for "causing dude to kill himself" except people are complaining about it like that's what he was charged for. Sure, it was the reason why it was brought to attention as much as it was, but that's not he was charged for because the legal system is smarter than that.

And it's fucked up we're charging a man over a simple college prank gone wrong. Beware everyone, youre hijinks mean jail time if someone is the least bit over-sensitive.
Oh, those great college pranks where people secretly film their roomate's intimate sexual encounters and then threaten to expose them publically, as well as showing the footage to others. Those are the best!

...but seriously he deserved everything he was given. It was entirely the decision of the young man who killed himself as to whether or not he wanted to make public his sexuality. The fact he hadn't showed that he was clearly uncomfortable, with either himself or with what we thought would be people's reactions.

Also, what if his family found out? What if they ostracized him? For a lot of homosexuals, there's nothing worse than your family effectively disowning you merely based on your sexuality.

People shouldn't be saying, "Oh, it's just a college prank gone wrong; the guy who killed himself is just over-sensitive". No. Bullying hurts, coming out of the closet is fucking difficult, especially in a society that routinely misunderstands and openly attacks them. No, he's not responsible for the man's death, but that doesn't make what he did any less excusable.

Didn't he cause a death as a result of his crime?

If you commit a crime and someone dies (even your partners in crime) you are responsible for the death.

If you rob a bank and cause a shootout, stray hits are your responsibility.

Now question i want to know is . If he had secretly filmed someone having heterosexual sex , and said person commited suicide , would it be still considered a hate crime?
If that person was from the opposite sex it would be a hate crime. It's still bias, even if a man wouldn't be that bothered by a video of him with a woman.

But the video could still destroy his reputation or his relationship with his family. It *could* drive someone to suicide.

However everyone will figure that a hate crime committed towards a minority is always worse.

The thing we need to focus on is the fact that he killed himself. He is so ashamed about getting it on with another man, then maybe he should not do it. Every gay that kills himself for being exposed, makes the rest of them look bad because you need to treat it like a normal thing.
And the reason he would feel ashamed? Because society makes gay people feel that they should be ashamed of their actions - that it's a "sin", or at least that it runs counter to the ideal of the married heterosexual couple with kids.

I don't really know the whole situation.
But was this gay roommate constantly bringing over strange gay men to have sex with all the time or something?

I've lived with intolerable roommates in cramped college dorms before too. I hated when they brought their girlfriends over and acted inappropriately as though I weren't there.

Maybe he's not a bully. Maybe he's just putting the guy in his place.

Again, I don't know all the facts. Nor do I care to look it up.

I think they should just let him walk free, give him some community service or something. I don't think it was a hate crime, he was just being an immature dick. He probably feels bad enough for what he's done.

For a 10 year sentence they're placing full blame on this Ravi, an effective manslaughter charge. They're saying he was fully responsible for bringing him to the point of suicide, he may have been the final straw but what kind of mental state would a person have to be in to kill himself over one incident like this? It was a life full of insecurity and low self-esteem that brought him to that point, not the one guy who ousted him as a homosexual.

It's like if a group beats Guy A to within an inch of his life, then Guy B comes and pokes him, Guy A dies and the courts find Guy B guilty for causing the death.
Actually, Ravi said in a interview that he did nothing wrong(even the invasion of privacy). Hes an entitled ass.

And the big three hes being charged with is Witness Tampering, Invasion of Privacy and Bias Indimidation, not causing the guy to kill himself.

Eh...don't see why people are defending the guy, this is obviously a very serious thing he's done.

As for deporting him, there was a man in Australia who lived there since he was two, served like 20 years or something for child abuse, but got deported to the UK since he never actually became a citizen. He tried to fight it, and the UK was not happy about getting him.

That doesn't sound like justice to me. I don't think non-violent offenses should be possible to be charged as "hate crimes." There is a big difference between embarrassment and violence. Nobody should get 10 years in jail for embarrassing someone.

How the fuck do you cause one to commit suicide? Did Ravi put a gun to kids head and force him to jump off the bridge?

You can't force anyone to commit suicide, cause if you did IT WOULDN'T BE SUICIDE! For fucks sake.

You can force a person to suicide if you relentlessly bully someone like that. And filming someone having sex is NOT in any way a simple prank, it's a crime. And he did it repeatedly to him. It's sick and disgusting is what it is.

...Oh this is the problem I have with the Anti-Bullying movement...

What do you define as relentless? Cause you can block people on twitter. You can block people on Aim. You can block people on facebook... ergo, you don't *HAVE* to see Cyber-bullying if you don't want to but unfortunately most choose to subject themselves to it.

Just the same, I understand that bullying *Feels* relentless to the victim, but honestly no one has a bully looming over their shoulder 24.7

And this Ravi guy? What "bullying" did he do? He set up an illegal video camera for his own purposes, discovered his roommate having sex, sent out a tweet or two, and later tried to set up a viewing party. That doesn't sound like bullying to me, that sounds like a plot out of a Kevin Smith film. He didn't throw up posters on the campus, or follow the victim around with a giant neon sign.

So do I blame Ravi for the kids suicide? Fuck no. Do I think he acted with hate in his heart? No. The only crime he is guilty of is illegal surveillance. This verdict is bullshit.

Hes also being charged with witness tampering, they have emails and texts saying that they should say x on the witness stand. Which is something that is never taken lightly.

Deporting someone seems cruel and unusual, but in any case, those are just the possible sentences; the actual ones could in fact be a lot less. I go to the same university as the guy did, and I've heard that he rejected a plea bargain of 600 community service hours and no jail time, so that was kinda stupid.
