There is nothing wrong with it. I would actually encourage it as anyone that never makes a charactor of the opposite sex is permanently overlooking about 20% of the games total content in a BioWare game. As making an opposite sex charactor tends to effect gameplay aspects as well in them. I eventually get around to making a chick in every game. If I don't do it first to get it out of the way.

Nothing wrong with a bit of variety. Always playing as a guy would seem a bit close-minded. Like only watching films with male protagonists.

I usually make male characters but in MMOs I like to make female characters. Hell, if I'm gonna be staring at an ass the entire time I play why not make it a girl's ass?

I don't mind which gender I play and games where I have a choice I play through twice, one for each gender. Though in Mass Effect I prefer the female Shepard because the voice acting is much better.

i always base it on the class: Male Warrior/Knight/Barbarian, Female Rogue/Mage/Priest ... it's that simple :p

I usually play male characters in my RPG's.I'm only playing as a female optionally when replaying that certain game if it bares repeating i.e Mass Effect,Dragon Age.

Also,no matter what RPG it might be I always seem to choose human no matter what =o

I've always thought of it as weird, except in those cases where a race is restricted to one sex (such as Dwarves in LotRO). My problem with guys playing girl characters is 1) they have no reason to, and 2) sometimes they pretend to be girls for real in order to get free things from other players. I've heard many stories about guys doing that, and considering that I actually am a girl and don't use my sex to convince others to give me free things, I think it's bullshit that guys pretending to be girls do it.

The first one is still my biggest problem. I understand why some girls play male characters. They don't want to be harassed because they are girls, etc. But why would a guy want to play a female character? Guys are always trying to be "manly", and yet they'll try on a prissy little female elf for size? And I'm tired of the age old "I don't want to stare at a dude's ass the whole time" excuse. I've said it numerous times: if you're staring at your character's ass throughout the ENTIRE video game, you're doing it wrong!

So that leads me to one conclusion. Guys make female characters because it is the modern day version of cross-dressing, except that no one has to know you're doing it because you're anonymous.

For the most part, I play female characters. I just find them more fun to play than males, though I do balance them out as evenly as possible.

In RPGs, the gender of your character might have an effect on the content of the game. If I really love a game (like Mass Effect of Dragon Age) I will replay it in every way possible to get everything out of the game.

Not at all. its your game, do as you wish.

I normally always go with male characters, simply because I can relate to them more. My friend always makes this notion of "If I have to watch the backside of any character... "blah blah blah
I agree with you completely, and my friends say the same thing. "You want to watch a dudes butt for about 6 hours?" Apparently I'm the only person who is looking around the character. Also if you play as a female character then you flirt with dudes... which is just awkward.
It's easy for you guys, but I have to play as female character since I'm unable to tear my eyes away from the buttocks of any character I'm controlling, and to even glance at another man's behind would be totally gay, which I'm 110% not.
I'm so not gay that I'll ogle anything that moves... I even have to wear blinkers and a neck brace to keep myself straight when I walk down a crowded street.

Unfortunately, my rampant heterosexuality means I can't play any third person game with a male protagonist, like all the Grand Theft Auto and Hitman games, but it's much safer to miss out on lots of games than to risk turning myself gay.

But seriously, I hate that "If I have to watch the backside of any character... " argument and it's horrible, confused homophobic undertones.

One of my friends (who shall remain anonymous) almost refuses to play female characters (and when he does, is very awkward about it), because he thinks that your character is supposed to be you. He sometimes gives me flak about having female characters in addition to male ones (I have one of each character in Borderlands - guess which one he comments on the most), usually hinting that it somehow makes me unmanly.

He'd better not push it, though... playing a girl isn't as damaging to your macho, straight-guy image as boffing Zevran with your self-insert hero. Fortunately, the riffing has remained inoffensive, thus far.

No, it's not weird, though the situation kinda is - see, most people would find it weird seeing a girl play a male character, while vice-versa tends to be taken as more normal (in the gaming community at least, considering non-gamer females think you're a weirdo in the first place, so that doesn't count! :p ).

But yeah, personally I tend to make some characters male, some female. It depends on a few things, but I have to say that I generally prefer female characters, though I can't really place an answer as to why. My mate used to use the ol' argument of "well I'd rather stare at a female arse than at a male one the whole day" and it's kinda sorta true, but it's not the "whole story".

If you think about it though, it's not much different with movies. I mean, if you put a male and a female character in a butt-kicking movie, assuming they're both equally skilled at acting, don't you prefer watching the girl as the main ass-kicking protagonist? :p

As a female I often play games as female because the experience is somewhat rare. Most protagonists aren't female, so playing male by default is pretty common, especially in most FPS games. I still create male characters from time to time, but the gender of your character shouldn't be that important in a game.

I'm not terribly picky, as long as I can make the character look good in some fashion. Played most of WoW as a female, but also ran around as a male orc (because the females looks fairly eh), and FFXI I played a galka originally until I realized they got the short end of the stick in almost everything I wanted to play and went elvaan female.

I don't care what other people play as, if they want to play the opposite of thier sex that's fine. It's just the ones that pretend to be that gender that utterly piss me off. Everyone in WoW automatically assumed I was a guy until I spoke on Vent, and still a few didn't believe it because I was pretty damn good.
