well i recently made a female character for dragon age and i see no problem with it
its a change for the gameplay and story of some RPG's (like DAO and ME)for those it matters and for those i do it
and for other's its makes a sliver of a difference (like Oblivion and Fallout) for those it never matters and i never do it

I had recently bought Dragon Age (Yes, I know.. im a bit late to it all) and made my first character which was a Female Elf Rouge.

Upon doing this, my girlfriend gave me a brief lecture about why it was weird for a guy to make a female character. Its just something I have always done. In RPGs I make a Male Human Warrior, a Female Elf Rogue and a Male Elf Mage(or that RPGs varient).

Does anyone else see anything wrong with making a character of the opposite sex?

no i play both nothihng wrong with it but do you really always follow that setup every time? i would find that boring after awhile for me each char is uniqe and i just see how things play out with out much of a set path for there devloment

I personally always create girls whenever possible but that's probably because I've had my fill of male protagonists.

I generally play as female characters in RPG's, not sure why...I just find it more interesting, playing a character complete different to myself. I don't think I've ever based a character in a game off myself...and also, it's the only way ya can have all those awkward talks with Garrus in ME2. Seriously, some of those lines made me fucking laugh my ass off.

No.

I play both genders in almost every game that I play that I get the chance to do so, which means at some level I do a fair degree of playing opposite. I choose my characters based off of how I view a character's concept in an RPG setting, as well as my own personal interest in acting as a role that, though always similar to myself, is still something different. I create a "character" or a "personality", and then I pick a gender that I think best suits what I am trying to create in that character or personality. I don't think of it as some kind of "eye candy" or odd desire in my eyes, but rather as an opportunity to change the "rules" a little bit and to be someone different.

If people want to harass me for playing both genders in the games that I play because its "weird" or "not correct", my answer to them is to tell them to go away, though I would likely use much harsher words than that. ;)

When I played WoW, I played a Female Blood Elf Rogue but that all started because the males looked like total poofs. Same thing went with Night Elves and Humans. But then again, I did have a both Male and Female Undead.

I play my own (female) gender in WoW just because I'd have trouble projecting onto a male character, as well as because the male cast in the game tend to be HUGE and I can't imagine my priest or rogue being that tall. Trouble is, I generally assume people are their avatar's gender, and it makes me a little uneasy not knowing who somebody is...mreah. I do think that guys in the game are more willing to help me out or make me gear than they are with my brother, but I don't think that's demeaning so much as friendly. eh. but playing the opposite gender is perfectly fine, it's not weird -- some people would just rather play who they look like, and some people aren't restricted by that so much.

i prefer having female avatars in RPGs if i get the option to, i like to see the world from a womans point of view and being a bad ass seems to make the game more interesting if you're female.

RPG is my favorite genre and I've always chosen the male gender. I have no idea why, it feels weird to play female, for some reason.
