"Because if I'm going to be staring at someone's ass for hours on end, it might as well be a girls'"

A quote from an insightful guildmate a while back.
I thought I was the only one who said that.....

Yeah in RPG's I'll do it occasionally, never in anything online though.

Usually if the girls look better, I'll switch up. I rolled a female character in MHFU and never regretted it, the girl armor really does look better. Also, a lot of the time, guy characters are fugly as hell. Example: I ended up with something like.. 13 female characters in the old Neosteam OB, because all the guys either looked like Galkas or Ganondorf.

Hell, girls actually get better gear in SMT: Imagine. As in, a some of the gender restricted stuff is a LOT better for females.

It really mostly comes down to looks though, do I wanna play an entire game as some hulking clod? I deleted my first FFXI character because I thought he (male hume) looked dense as hell. I would walk around and just be uncomfortable looking at him.

I don't play MMO's, but in games I usually go for the character that looks the coolest.
I tend to prefer female, since it's easier for me to identify with, but if the guy option looks better, I have problem playing as a guy. It's not like it's exactly like me anyway.

For me, whether I identify with a character, be it in a comic, tv-series or an RPG, it matters more what he/she is like in nature and character than gender.

Of course, sometimes when I play I play not trying to identify with the character, but create a fictional character I get to order around.

I heard a statistic on the MMO report that said 3/5 WoW avatars are female, but only 1/5 WoW gamers are female. That means that for every five players in WoW, 2 have some Freudian issues going on. More seriously though, I think it is a psychological thing, does your avatar exist for you to see, or for others to see in your mind? If your a straight guy, and you think the visual representation of your character is there just for you, it's actually more logical to just go for eye candy, whereas if you want other people to be able to draw some conclusion about you based on your avatar, it would make a lot more sense to have a hulking, awesome, super-hero for your character.

Well, as a girl gamer I end up playing male characters all the time in games without choice, and it never bothers me. It's just a form of role playing for me...I don't care what the character is . . . so long as the story is well written and the character is believable, I become them for the duration of the game.
With MMO's and games where you are given the choice, it's not much different. I play mostly females, with occasional males just to have a different character experience. I don't play it up like I'm an actual guy in the game...people know I'm a girl once they get to know me.
I will admit it's easier to gain immediate respect for my actions when people think I'm a guy though. It's not as common these days, but people still occasionally place a barrier between 'you're a girl' and 'you're a good player who knows wtf their doing'.

Hey I remember this article. It was made quite a long time ago though.

Well. Um variety, Curosity (several depths of curosity), And sometimes for fun.
Those are pretty much all the reasons.

I know some guys who play as girl characters in various MMO's/RPG's and I have always wondered why?

Would anyone like to shed some light on this subject?
I like girls more?

Seriously, dressing up female characters, watching girls on screen, cool sexy armor, what's not to like?

Besides, because of my username, a lot of people confuse my gender anyway... it's the internet, if someone wants to think I'm a girl or a guy, doesn't really matter.

When playing online, I will pretty much always use a male character. I would prefer to play as a female, but I'm not going to run the risk of having people think I'm a chick.

When offline, however, I usually play as female characters. I have no idea why, it's just what I prefer. Except for when there are relationships in the game. There's no way I would play as a chick in Mass Effect, for example, because getting into relationships with men would be creepy.

I do play as both male and females in MMOs. It depends on how I want to make the character. I usually play RPGs as males the first time through.

I tried to play guys on MMOs after I kept getting people thinking my failure at video games was cute.... to a creepy degree. (Seriously, after two hours, a guy was yelling, "She's taken!" at someone for walking up and saying "Hello" to my guild.)

This, sadly, resulted in girl characters (supposedly played by actual girls) thinking I was a guy with an attractive personality and calling me their boy, their knight, or some such pet name.
I find this even worse. :(
So the only possible conclusion is that you should stop playing MMO's.

OT:I play as much as a female as I can.I don't know why I do,I just do.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that seeing a woman kick some major ass is much more awesome.Or maybe it's because I hate most male voice actors.

I dunno... I rarely play as a girl. I invest a lot of vicarious emotion into my video game characters, so much that my virtual avatar is like an extension of my body. I, being a straight, red-blooded guy, was thus a bit put off when my female Shepard "did it" with Kaidan Alenko in Mass Effect 1. It felt very, VERY wrong, and I ended up looking away guiltily from the screen.

I have stayed away from playing as a female in RPGs ever since.

Just for the record, I know Mass Effect is not an MMORPG but I play a female because I felt the lines for the female character in the Mass Effect games are better and she doesn't sound as silly when trying to be evil.

YOU'RE A BIG DUMB JELLYFISH!

In RPGs, I generally switch it up a bit. I usually start as the generic male character, and then if I'm playing through a few more times I'll make a couple females based off of characters I made for a story.
