I go for male all the time. I can only going with a female character in pokemon crystal since it was the first "Choose you gender" game I played.

Pretty much this.

Plus Jennifer Hale is just a better VA than Mark Meer. Sorry Mark, you're good and all, but you don't hold a candle to Hale :(
Wait....Jennifer Hale? Isnt she the voice of Samus and Disney's Cinderella?

Its kind of fun to see how the other side lives without actually changing your sex. Curiosity I guess. There is nothing wrong with it.

Where else would you be able to play as the other gender? Except by debasing yourself (in public) that is. Besides, it's fun and sexy. 'Nuff said.

The only time I've played as a guy character when given the option (I'm a girl) is in Vampire: The Masquerade. Some of the female options *cough* Toreador, Nosferatu, Gangrel *cough* were just too hideous, so I played as the male one.

In online games I find I'm not harassed too much really, as most people just assume I'm a guy playing as a girl ^.^

It sometimes suits more to that character, in WoW when Im playing night elf priest its kinda wierd to pick male because it suits them more from RP POV and night elf males look kinda wierd as casters.

I usually play as a guy the first time I play, and a girl the next time. Just to see if there is any difference. I also prefer creating a girl rather then a guy, I feel less... gay... that way.

I could go with the ass comment for mine. Then again, I usually play male characters. I've had bad experiences in the past being chased around by goobers, so I find if I play a male character, I'm good.
Apparently my euphamisms make me seem like a gay man. So I'm safe. ;D

Where I have the choice, I will always complete my first playthrough as a fem. character. Simply because most games (That aren't tomb raider, and therefore not worth mentioning) come with a standard male Protagonist.

This. And this. And yes, she is. Among an absolute crapload of other things. Seriously, check out her imdb page.

Edit: I don't mind playing as a chick sometimes, it gives me a break from playing as yet another brown haired tough guy who looks like he has a staple diet of steroids and more steroids.

I can only say this. MMORPG. Many Men Online Role-Playing Girls. It really is that easy, even in WoW in the RP servers in one of my few adventures, i found that half the girls i thought were girls were actually 25+ yr old men. It was sad...

Don't play MMOs, but I generally think female characters are more fun to play as. Probably the outfits; females in games tend to have a lot of style (and in some cases, like Pokemon D/P/Pt, the male's design is just retarded and I refuse to use it). Maybe it's 'cause I'm gay and I get along with girls easier or something? Dunno. I've been playing as guys more often lately, though

I'm a male. I have a guy character on Fallout 3. He's a nice guy, good karma. Helps everyone.

Then there's my female character. Bad karma. You look at her wrong, and its sledgehammer to your face, and your dogs face, and your childs face.

I like seeing female antagonist/protagonist characters. Somehow, its much cooler to see a woman take a mans limbs off with a hammer than a man.

As far as other games, I usually go with what looks best with my characters abilities. I've played a few games where magic based characters look funny doing the animations as males, yet completely natural as a female.

Just depends on the kind of character I'm making. My next Fallout character will be a neutral female. Haven't decided on race yet, but I've always played as a white(Caucasian) character, and I'd like to try something else.

TL:DR: I like to see females that can kick ass.

A quote from an insightful guildmate a while back.
I think this is a very big reason why I choose female characters in any game (though back in the Street Fighter II days it was mostly because Chun Li was just fecking awesome). When I played Mass Effect, although I wanted to play a female Shepard, I left it up to the flip of a coin, which landed female out of dumb luck. Interestingly enough, she ended up looking like Annie Wersching from "24". I played a female character on a text based MUD, a fact I kept secret until the character finally died of old age. Strangely enough, I heard and was told by others who heard that people thought my character was one of the best played females they ever saw. Does that mean I'm a damn good RPer or does that say something about me?

As a friend of mine once said "Limiting your gender options make you sexist" not that I agreed with her... But I don't mind playing either, as long as no perverts hit on me on either side.

I don't know, when playing single player RPGs it can be fun to play as a female (I'm a guy) just for the experience of role playing a character that's a complete departure from who you are in real life.
If I actually played MMOs I sure as hell wouldn't do that though.
