Could be worse. The guys could get overly-chatty to try and impress the girl. Yes it sounds stupid as hell, but I've seen(or rather, heard) it happen quite a bit on Xbox Live.
As a female who plays TF2 quite regularly, I can attest to this. Many guys stay perfectly normal, but too many others say "Oooh, hey, a girl! Where do you live? Do you have a boyfriend? What size are your boobs?" On a good day with the right people, it's harmless and fades after a while. On a bad day...it leads to my blocked player list expanding very quickly.

Man, that's half the fun of online games, the people.
People would be weirded out if I hung out with a 30 years old dude from Canada, a guy from Switzerland, and some 25 year old chick from Washington.
I can do that online though. Good times are had by all.

I'll talk to anyone online as long as they're friendly. I rarely use my mic for fear of retribution cause I'm 15, even though AFAIK my voice isn't very high or whiny at all, so it shouldn't affect me.

I most see. Some random join normally they're 12-15yo when they find out that there are a few girls on the server they try and impress them. Why the girls are to old for them and on the other side of the country.

I'm shy around people all the time, even online I wouldn't know what to say unless its game related. Sometimes I'll act like a dick to mess with people but other than that, I'm pretty quiet.

It doesn't bother me, once while playing Killing Floor, I actually had good time playing with a girl and the other 4 on the server could swear that we were a couple. Nah, I just play friendly. If you are an asshole in game, good luck getting a girl.

Why not just talk to them as fellow gamers?
You tripping Son? That sounds like common sense and we can't be having that.
I'm stoned out of my freakin' mind... I'm starting to think of treating people as people and not pairs of breasts you can gain favor with!

Guys....
I thought we'd all agreed on this: Rule 29: On the internet, all girls are men, and all kids are undercover FBI agents.

Man OP, that sounds like one helluva extreme. But as someone else said, there's the other extreme of talking TOO much. tl;dr example While I was, shamefully, grinding in a Korean MMORPG for a half-hour or so I was in a specific area: this (assumed) guy was talking to a(n assumed) gal about Final Fantasy VIII.
Well, not JUST Final Fantasy VIII, the ending of Final Fantasy VIII.

I couldn't even PHATHOM that there'd be that much to say. Let alone explain it to someone for that long. I was bored 3 minutes in, and remember, I'm grinding in an MMO. I had nothing else better to look at.

It was like a train wreck in slow motion. Very few words were exchanged, it was more like a class lecture. Iunno, maybe the gal was impressed?

I'm personally atrocious when it comes to conversing online, and I think it's because of my lack of experience with online chatting in general. Plus, I type near-exactly how I speak. Makes for good typing patterns, makes for terrible conversation material since it becomes reading material with none of the appropriate emphasis, sarcasms, hand-gestures, and so on.

I personally DO get quieter in general, and more around gals, in an online presence. A lack of confidence in my weak spot that I can't overcome(?). Adding in that if I feel like I'm boring a gal I'll take my leave (much easier to tell in a face-to-face premise), and I shy away from conversation more. So I cut the people OP is lighting up a liiiittle slack. At least when I talk, I chop it up!

Bust out the reading glasses and symphonic music!

I don't talk much to begin with in online games (Constantly yelling at me to say something over and over gets on my nerves), but if I'm playing with a girl I'll talk even less because I'm afraid she'll take anything I say out of context and get mad at me. Girls do it all the time to me in real life, so I doubt they're different online.

I'm talkative. I like to talk usually.

I'll never understand why people have such trouble talking to members of the opposite sex, but hey, whatever.

Yeh...i get really nervous....even online..
Your avatar is appropriate. Also, when I read your post I got a little brain-fart and just sat there (sat 'here', technically) blinking for a few seconds.

OT: I have never met a person who clams up online. I occasionally do it when I'm talking to people I know that aren't close friends, because I tend to not know the exact social nuances of what I say, so I have to sit there and think about it, trying to figure out how my words will be interpreted, and then re-think it a couple times around the more sensitive topics to make sure I don't royally *censored* myself. But that's out of courtesy, not out of being shy.

EDIT: I'm fine here, for example, because most of us are geeks/nerds, so I tend to either be talking to like-minded people, or guys/gals who are open to debate with people of different view-points. But in real-life, outside of my friend-group, it tends to be my geeky-gamerness trying to talk to someone from a completely different social experience, so it is like talking to each other in different languages where you kind of understand what is being said, but stuff tends to get lost in translation.

Shit man, I'm so high that I've begun to think of all people as equals, regardless of skin color, nationality, and religion.

I also have a mean appetite for some Doritos...

OT now: I didn't read the first post, so I'm just gonna do what I do best and pull some philosophical sounding bullshit out of my hammerspace:

Guys that are shy around girls in the interweb... They obviously haven't learned that 90% of women on the internet are actually men.

And they may also have some personal issues that need some resolvin'.

I think I'm going to go let my brain rest a while now, I've started seeing things.

I flirt with them. Pursuing in such activities usually leads to disappointment after looking at a picture of them on Facebook or something. A good friend of mine actually met his fiance' online. I could never see myself doing that but it worked out pretty damn well for him. Also, he lives in the UK (As do I), and she lives over in America.
