Half life 1 is about as good as 2. It gets less attention because its alot more simpler, its run and gun. So its an immense game but it isn't as ground breaking as 2.

I really hate when people use that term phrase. When a game won't run under Vista, or uses a gameplay mechanic that simply isn't fun anymore, THAT is a game that hasn't aged well. half-life may look old and be a little less sophisticated in its design (compared to the brilliant sequel) but it's a historic game. and you will absolutely enjoy half-life 2 more after playing 1, there are just too many call-backs in HL2 to recommend otherwise.

the only other thing I will say, the last levels on Xen are notoriously obnoxious. give them a fair shot, but if you start to go really nuts or just get stuck then you can go ahead and start half-life 2, and finish 1 when you've got time.
Couldn't have put it better myself.

I have the ENTIRE available series, so I can explain.

HL1 had exellent gameplay for the time, using a modified Quake 2 engine. It was praised with alot of trophees. However, when HL2 came out... Oh boy, totally new experience!
Would a person want to play half life 1 before they play half life 2?
It's recommended, alot of the backstory will be explained if you finish it all. Be advised, though, the graphics don't look anywhere near the quality of today.
I will point you to the Black Mesa Source project, which is basically "make HL1 look better than everything", it's a freelance project mod to overhaul the graphics.

[sub]Edit: semi-ninja'd[/sub]
I already knew of it's existence, I just find in my opninion you'll have to play the original HL1 first to fully understand the storyline.

[sub]Plus I forgot to mention it[/sub]

Half-Life(one) was a facepalm-inducing nightmare. I liked every minute of it, just a lot less than Half-Life 2 and the following episodes.
You liked it but...it was a facepalm-inducing nightmare?
I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Its a great game, but the reason people talk about half life 2 is because its simply a much better game. Half-life 1 was revolutionary and fresh, but it was also ridiculously frustrating sometimes.
The unforgiving jumping sections, terrible mine-cart levels, and that horrifying last level on Xen gave me nightmares.

Still definitely worth playing though, because the core gunplay(is it a word?) is just amazing. I find the marines of half life more fun to fight sometimes than the combine in half life 2 but thats just me.

As others have said, you should definitely buy it.

I, like you, played Half Life 2 first. However, last Christmas, as a present to myself, I got all the Half Life games.

They are master pieces. I found them to be a great deal harder than the Half Life 2 games, I basically needed to save everyone couple of seconds, but they were a blast!

these days, i hear a lot about Half Life 2.
but 1 thing i've noticed is, i've never really heard anyone ever talk about Halflife 1. i mean, if there is a 2, there must have been a 1. but nobody seems to talk about it, and no game stores i've checked have it.
what was it? why is it that it has been forgotten?
It's probably too dated now unless you played games at the time it came out / or are a retro gamer, Which I doubt.

Here's how to catch up on the fun without playing an old game

a) Watch this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J80KD4BG7M] series

or

b) wait for this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGlhgVz5r6E]

I really want to get the original Half Life, but no game store I've found sells it. Basically, there are no copies left except those taking up dust in countless people's bedrooms, when most of those don't even play it anymore because they're so engrossed in Half Life 2 and its Episodes. I feel like I'm losing out because I won't buy the second game or the episodes until I've played the original, because I'm a stickler for story, and because of that I won't get the Orange Box yet, so I can't play Portal or TF2 yet. I refuse to buy them seperately when I can save money getting them together, you see. I'll probably just buy the Valve Complete Collection on Steam, but I'm a bit iffy about using Steam for certain games because my laptop doesn't have the greatest graphics, and I can't play L4D on it because there's too much lag...

Never heard of HL1? Well... I've heard stranger things.
My opinion? Follow the Black Mesa: Source team and wait until they release their remake of the game.

HL2 is a prequel to the original HL in terms of story, so you can get away with not playing it.

Half-Life 1 is 11 years old, you haven't heard of it because you're young? Half-Life was awesome, I loved every minute of it, and when HL2 was announced and we saw what it looked like, it was the most realistic game ever conceived by man.
Im 15. I have heard of half-life
I own half-life 1, 2 and episode 1 and 2

People of any age should know about half-life and should have played it atleast once.

HL1 was the first "real" FPS I've ever played. Sure you could count doom and wolf3D but in my book, the FPS chapter starts with HL1.

Is this a joke? seriously, how can someone who has played half life 2 not have heard of the orginal. next youll be asking what doom and quake are!

And why does everyone keep saying it "used" to be great and that when it was released it was fun? have you seen the standards of games these days?! the only thing getting bigger is the standard of graphics (and the price tag seems to follow on because of this)

Half life was, is and always will be an amazing game, one of the best you can play even now. the younger generation seems to forget about gameplay and apparently all that matters now is if the graphics are good enough. 90% of FPS shooters you will find on the market today are just watered down versions of half life with some flashy graphics to cover it up.

im only 18 and half life was the game of my childhood. if you dont enjoy it, go back to playing the hundreth eddition of call of duty and come back when your older...

sure, that's definitely a word (one i'll keep in mind when discussing games from now on).

And YES, the marines were hardcore! i prefer the difficulty curve of half-life 1 because you got to dick around with the aliens first then BAM you're getting your ass handed to you by marines!
in hl2 the low combine are less frightening than the headcrabs and zombies are. the higher up combine are still pretty rough, but nothing like getting cornered by three or four marines!

dude, you'll be fine. half-life 1 is available on steam, it's updated to run its original engine on XP and Vista, and believe me you could that game at 300fps on a netbook. it's noble of you to postpone your enjoyment of portal and TF2 just so you can properly progress thru the half-life series, but that means you have no excuse to not grab steam and try half-life 1 on your laptop asap! after that, you might wanna rent orange box for 360 to play hl2 and the episodes. graphically they are still up to par and i'm finding playing with a controller still satisfying. portal also is fun on console, but TF2 needs to be enjoyed on a good gaming rig so you can enjoy the updates and custom maps.

It is up there with DOOM and Wolfenstein as one of the most influential PC FPSs ever made. Now, I want you to open up your Steam client, and go to the Steam Store, and Buy either Half Life, or Half Life: Source (Source is a port to the same engine as HL2, but the difference is not huge)

It is a must-play.
Get it.
Get it now.

Or I will send Lamaar after you in your sleep.
Lamaar? She's pathetic (debeaked, can't zombify (Holy ******* ****, Zombify is not a word. My Spell Checker however suggested Combine!) you) and dead. Send a bunch of Manhacks or an advisor.
LAMAAR ISN'T DEAD! She can't be! can't be...
Sorry man, I launched Lamaar into space as well as the gnome. Sorry.
