It is taking quite some time, but I'm willing to wait for quality. I wonder if they are solely concentrating on making episode 3 at this point. There is of course the Portal 2 theory, but it makes me wonder if they're also working on a new game engine.

As Valve don't seem like the kind of developer to just use the latest Unreal engine that most others seem to do.
My theory (based on nothing) is that there will be an Orange Box 2, with EP3, Portal 2, and some updated form of Counterstrike.

I'm not entirely sure that Valve isn't just making a third HL. Even if they aren't I would like for them to take their time, and do it right. Or maybe they are making some decent DLC for L4D. Or Portal 2. Or Team Fortress 3. (they aren't) But I'm sure we'll see something pretty soon here.

It will be released according to this: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time
That was way to confusing, mind pointing me in the right direction?

Here is a blank check. Write down any number on this check and I will pay it. That sounds like a sweet idea.

Basically, after Duke Nukem Forever goes gold.

So a while.
Ok now I get it, I didn't really get what it was all about.

If it's taking this long for Valve to release another HL game, then it means that they are making HL3, not ep3. but I can't wait for it to come out! :D
Sigh... the episodes are Half-Life 3, you guys. Valve decided that it would take waaaay too long to develop Half-Life 3, so they split it into Episodes.
I'm pretty sure it would be called "HL3: EP1" if that was the case. Valve want to release HL3 on a new engine. But didn't want to cause long delays between game releases. HL3 is coming after ep3. They have confirmed this.

I wonder if that means that we won't get the long wait we got between HL and HL2 between Ep3 and HL3. It would make sense, if they're working on EP3 and the new engine at the same time, as my understanding of the delay between HL and HL2 was that it was mostly them developing the Source engine.

What valve does is they ignore the demands of the people to release the damn game, thus allowing them to perfect the game in as many ways possible, compensating immensely for the wait time.

No one ever said that Episode 3 was never going to be made, and valve is too far in their production to just leave us on cliffhanger in one of the most popular games of all time.

And Steam! And Team Fortress 2! And Counter-Strike:Source!

Good point on Steam, but those games both use Source, which just reinforces my point.

It's going to come out eventually, and it's going to change the way that we look at games forever. Seriously though, I think that it's a good sign that we haven't seen it yet, because it means that Valve is putting time and effort into this one. If it takes another year, I won't care, because it will make up for the wait with sheer quality.

BTW: Episode 1>Episode2 2

Just random thoughts cause its late:

It would be really cool if valve can keep everything silent also to the press and and the end of episode 3's cinematic you see something like "To be continued.. 2010"

The new orange box should contain: ep3, portal2, Black Mesa:Source (I can dream!)

Half Life 2 Episode 2 > Portal

I know they've been working on a lot of games, but I don't want the Freeman to get abandoned...

TF2 was going to be released in 1999...and again in 2003 or something.

Tf2 only got released in 2007. But TF2 was being developed before the Source Engine had its first code.
