Nice to know I'm not alone in doing that. And the SMG really is a good working horse for a lot of the sticky situations. If it turns out to be inadequate there's the shotgun. And nobody will convince me that the shotgun is lame. Or the crossbow.
I thought the shotgun was pretty lame, it's only really effective at melee ranges, which is what you have a crowbar for. But then again, no shotgun will ever equal the greatness of Doom's shotguns.
Well, you have a point with the crowbar of course. I just prefer to blast stuff to hell with the shotgun. And I hardly expect it to be a lot of good at ranged targets. I actually never used to crowbar a lot. Mostly for bashing the infernal crates before I got the gravity gun. But I think we can chalk it up to differing tastes for close quarter combat. :)

(Edit: And thanks to Throbbing Ego for reminding me of the double shot. I knew I had forgotten something. I might add that I also enjoyed the sound of it.)

How do you feel about the crossbow by the way?

And you speak the divine truth when it comes to the shotguns in Doom.

Honestly Half-Life 2 is only good through one or 2 playthroughs and doesn't make up for it's retail price, let alone go past it. After that it gets dull and there's nothing to do besides singleplayer because there's no multiplayer. I know you have those other games developed by valve and all on steam but those aren't Half-Life 2. I wouldn't say it's good but it's not the best FPS and nearly close to it either.

Seriously, this has just become winging now. Half life 2 was one of the best games available at its time. When I first played it I was so engrossed and enjoyed every bit of it.

Obviously this game was a bit too hard for people like Wrongsprite lol.
There really isn't a point in ripping apart the game and analysing every part such as the fps aspect and comparing it to a full fledged fps. Half life 2 was supposed to incorporate lots of different game genres which it did extremely well.

What you're saying is essentially the same as buying a banana split and complaining because the banana is covered in ice cream and peeled for you. Go buy a banana if you want a banana.

I may be mistaken but I sure seem to recall having fun in HL2 Deathmatch. It may not be a fully fledged multiplayer experience with a million game modes I'll never play, but I sure had some fun.

Edit: I still play it from time to time when I feel for a simple round of murder and mayhem without any strange objectives other than to throw as many toilets in the face of my opponents as possible. And if killing people by flinging a toilet at them is not awesome, well, then I don't know what is. Come to think of it, that alone more than makes up the retail price.
/Edit

Also, I guess the retail price depends on when you bought it. Personally I bought it a couple of years after release because I had no PC that would run it back in 2004. It was pretty cheap and the amount of fun and time I spend on it more than makes up for the price.

Counterstrike Source was bundled with Half Life 2, and since then Valve released Half Life 2 deathmatch for free for owners of the game, so it's not fair to say it has no multiplayer.

OMG the crossbow
.357
pulse rifle (and it's kickass secondary
Gravity Gun

feel powerful and meaty, and just satisfying to use against enemies. the shotgun was good too, if you used the right click. Blasphemers, HL2 will remain in my heart forever.

Actually it would more like buying a banana and getting a banana split with a half rotten banana.

No... The fps aspect isn't broken or "rotten". It works and the weapons are interesting, just because some of them are weak isn't a reason to dislike the game, surely that just makes it more challenging.

Also how about the laser RPG launcher, thats an awesome weapon and combine rifle is equally cool. The game isn't there to just be an fps, you have to remember that.

The Orange Box is $30, regularly goes on sale for less (it sold for $10 a few weeks ago!), and contains Half Life 2, both episodes, Lost Coast, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Most games today retail for $50.

The experience, even if Half-Life 2 itself is somewhat dated, definitely exceeds the price of admission.

Maybe but the other multiplayer games they made are better imo, and those aren't nearly close to being any of my favorite or the most fun multiplayer games for anything, including consoles.

Please, tell us an example of a good FPS for you, because Half-Life 2 does everything right in my opinion, even if the enemies are rather inconsistent in their intelligence.
The fact the weapons don't go BOOOOOM every time you shoot isn't a flaw, and the story is good and well-told. if you find the scenes where characters tell you about what's going on "frustrating", I suggest you play something more mindless, like Halo.
And back on the weapons: tell me one game that had something that was as over-the-top AND somewhat feasible as the Pulse Rifle. Or something as strange but effective as the Pheromones.

Yeah well, Half-Life is not meant to be an fast action shooter. It still counts as an FPS however, and it does not matter what kind of definition you use, because universally, if you have weapons in a first person view, it's an FPS.

Enough said.
