Half-Life 2 is the #1 all-time PC game on Metacritic. It's the most well-thought out shooter ever produced, it's nearly guaranteed to entertain you, and if you get the Orange Box you also get the episodes plus Portal and Team Fortress 2. So to answer your question, yes, you should buy it.
Half-Life is only $10 on Steam? Buy it now. Hell, it's worth the ten bucks just for the first ten minutes alone. Only a handful of gaming moments feel significant, this is one of them. Oh, and the game itself is pretty badass too.

I never finished the first game, then played the second. It was a bit confusing to me, but it did not hurt my experience at all. It is definitely worth buying.
I played the second one with only a cursory knowledge of the first (I played the first level and then wiki'd the rest of the storyline. Ha ha) And dude, seriously, half life 2 is mean fun. You'l love it. Don't hesitate. Get it.

Funny, I completely freaking DECIMATED this game yesterday on a straight 12-hour sit down. I was working on Episode 1 tonight, in fact.
It's an all-around great game, and Gman starting the game off will confuse you just as much in the second game if you played the first game first, I can almost guarantee it.

No, it doesn't really need Half-Life 1 to make sense. There are maybe 4 characters, including yourself, who were involved in the first half-life game, half of which you never actually see, and then the only remaining character that has continuity is some creepy weirdo that will make your skin jettison.
