I've never played it. I did play Opposing Force and Blue shift though, but that was because my compouter is currently crap, and those games are about the best my computer can run. I probably would try HL2 if my computer wasn't a POS, since I did get the Orange Box, but my computer turned to crap before I could play it.
If I could find the first one, I might consider it, since it would probably be one of the few things I could play, though if it is like Opposing Force and Blue Shift, I am not sure if I am missing too much...
EDIT: I am not saying Opposing Force and Blue Shift weren't entertaining, hell, they were some fun times, just not the best things I have ever played.

Something being groundbreaking in the past doesn't mean you should play it at present. I mean, have you ever used an early phonograph because of how groundbreaking they were? It's essentially the same thing, and to be completely honest, the first Half-Life games have aged badly. They were clunky and look terrible, which isn't necessarily bad, but it's hard to establish a really compelling atmosphere if it all looks so terrible. They're good games and fun to play, but there are better games that are more fun these days.
Thank you for this. As it has been said, HL2 was groundbreaking for the time. Really, many games now have taken what HL2 did and massively improved upon them, story included. I think Bioshock did a much better job of telling the story without leaving perspective, as you have audio diaries which fill you in on the backstory as you go along. The story for the Half-Life series isn't even original in and of itself; guy in pseudo-power armor goes around killing alien overlords. Having gone off on a tangent, I'll leave with this. Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were great games for their time. However, that's just it. For. Their. Time. I think we can all leave it at that, and get on with our gaming lives.

I haven't played them, and my roomie said I need to. I bought the original half life and have started playing.

Well, that isn't to say they're not worth playing, because they are. It's just that they're both dated and really aren't the best games of all time or anything. They're really damn good if you can get into them.

Half:Life is one of the biggest hits in gaming history... now granted the originals dont really have a whooole lot of story..it does help to play them just to understand that SOMETHING crazy happened before half life 2 ..and that a vortigant was not just randomly sweeping streets for no damn reason lol. Personally I love the games and have played all of them, including expansions, mods etc. However if you played half life 2 and dident like it you probobly wont like the original either, but w.e its a proven formula for an amazing game that makes money..the majority clearly loves it and if your not one of the people that gets the full experience then w.e...play a different game...if you do get the experience..then awesome. Theres really not much else to say.

Oh, apologies, I didn't mean to come off as sounding like you should ignore them. I'm just trying to say what you said, remember that they were good, but new games do what they did better.
