The "surprise" will be that there is no Half Life 2 Episode 3.
Instead, we'll be treated to a 2 minute animated movie where Gordon Freeman wakes up in the hospital after that whole accident in Half Life 1... It was all a dream!

let's face it, they already lied to us about Cake.....

i don't know, valve have a poor track record when it comes to bringing what the fans are looking forward to. i wouldn't be surprised if this is an announcement to do with expanding steam onto various platforms or something.

"...questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise"
Means that the surprise is about Portal 2, not about half life.
Although this:

would be great.

I don't trust surprises from Valve.

However, part of me is hoping that this "surprise" is either Ep. 3 or perhaps the standalone console version of TF2 complete with updates I've been hearing rumors about.

I'm also hoping that it's not neurotoxin.

I kind of don't care anymore. If there is a third episode, fine, if not, then I'm waiting for this:
My guess is that the "Borealis" worked and there will probably be time traveling?
Seen that one before. It's a recolored version of the classic crowbar superimposed onto a canvas of a pretty sweet looking city scape I've seen before on CGSociety.

I hope THE Surprise is better than the surprise, and that the lie of cake surprise is true.

Im kinda hoping the surprise is a brand new engine.

The Source engine is great but it's starting to show it's age.

Well it's about time they announced it. I think that the fact that they weren't originally planning to announce whatever the surprise is is evidence that they simply made better progress on it than they were expecting, and not that it's a completely new product as that would be scheduled better.

I'm going to bet nickel that the surprise is that Valve purchased the Duke Nukem franchise and will continue to work hard to restart development on Duke Nukem Forever so that it can once again be delayed indefinitely.

Halo was the first of it's kind so it's original, and I've yet to see a game copy HL2.
The original Half-Life practically introduced set pieces to single player FPS games. Before that, most FPSs were linear corridor shooters that didn't involve the player with his surroundings. Half Life added puzzles and made the environment a huge part of the gameplay, as large as the combat itself. Like Halo, it was the first game to do this, and many would follow.

As for Half Life 2, it's mostly the same thing, but with a splendid physics engine. It does the set piece driven/environmental puzzles thing so well though, that no one blames it for being more of the same. Not all games need to completely innovate and introduce wholly new concepts to be considered great games.
I didn't know that. Perhaps because I take those things for granted and I think of HL2 as somewhat of a cult classic. Cult classic probably isn't the right word, but you see I was a lot younger when it came out so when I finally found HL2 years after it was made it was like a hidden gem to me. I think that's what screwed me up.
