Call me crazy, but I don't care for the Half-Life series.
I just didn't care for it's brand of gun-play. I loved the physics, that was my favorite part of the game, but I just didn't like the story or the characters. It felt very repetitive to me, and I put it down half-way through half-life 2 episode 2. Any thoughts?
Half life is over rated but still overall a decent game
i had to stop playing it after a hour because i was falling asleep

No sympathy here. There simply aren't any better FPSs around. Perhaps it doesn't have enough of Tom Clancy's name on the box for you?
You better not be disrespecting my copy of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. You wouldn't like it when it's angry.

I've been wanting to get into the HL series for quite a while, but I'm rather opposed to PC gaming. I am planning to pick up the Xbox Half-Life 2, though.

Still, it'll have to be pretty good to beat out the likes of Black, Halo 2, Project Snowblind, TS: Future Perfect and Timesplitters 2.
I suppose I didn't really mean Splinter Cell -> I was talking more about Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six.

Anywho, why would you be opposed to PC gaming? Timesplitters 2 is easily my favourite console FPS, as I only play console FPS for the splitscreen, but, looking at legacy, popularity, reviews, sales etc, Half Life as a series beats all the games you mentioned. Halo 2 may come close on sales.
I very much doubt even as a series that it's better than Timesplitters. Popularity and sales don't mean squat to me. In the end, it all comes down to opinion.

I'm opposed to PC gaming because my PC is crap and I can't game with it. Also, I prefer having a controller in my hand.
