I'm sick of it. I just read a thread about overrated games that you haven't played and probably hate, and within 4 posts CoD and Halo were up. I'd say a majority of the posts afterward were "Halo/CoD because it had boring environments/characters/bad plot/generic gameplay...but I never played it but it sucks ass."
People, Halo 2 was the first FPS I ever got into. It's how I spent my weekends and summers with my friends: playing a game that we thought was fun. I know I've had many fun moments with the Halo games, and I doubt I'm the only one. I don't really care for CoD all that much, but I have played it several times (and had fun) and I think the hate on it is as unfair as the hate on Halo. That's why I'm lumping the two together.
Here's what I want you to do: I want you to tell me things about CoD and Halo that you liked. I want to read them all. Characters, events in the story, fun moments you had playing it with your friends, the design of the vehicles or structures, anything that you liked from either series! Tell me!
And if someone talks about something that you didn't like, I'm sure that someone just made a CoD or Halo hate thread that you can post it on if you really need to get it off your chest. I know this is an easy target for fights or assholes to break out on, but I want to keep this thread happy.
The little detail about Halo 2 being your first fave makes your judgment questionable. A general rule i have is that you should never review your oldest favorite, nostalgia almost always blinds you to the games faults. It's why i never talk about Digimon World 3.
Anyway, i have played quite literally ALL HALO TITLES. Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo Wars, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. Take it from me, none of the numbers with numerals in them were the game at it's highest. Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo: Reach were the high points because they had the better campaigns and while Combat Evolved pretty much introduced the regenerating health mechanic, Reach was the game at it's absolute peak, one the upcoming 343 Studios will flat out be unable to replicate because at this stage, all they're doing is cashing in on a completed franchise with unnecessary sequels.
And the last thing you want me to do is judge them gameplay wise. In exchange for dual wielding and hijacking we got no interesting new vehicles, weapons were thrown through the ringer somewhat since ammo was too scarce for the Carbine and Battle Rifle and the SMG was pure shit on higher difficulties. When you reach Halo 3, you get the Brutes, the most laughable excuse for a hostile in any Halo game because they rarely hit you. ODST? Even worse. Halo: Reach had an overhaul that brought all hostiles to their peak, made them feel truly alien, and there were more opportunities to remind you that the Grunts breath a flammable gas.
As for CoD, Modern Warfare was good. Modern Warfare 2 introduced bugger all as far as mechanics went, ruined a lot of the immersion and impact the old game had, and the controversy element had the air of trying too hard to draw attention. And Black Ops? That is a fucking retarded joke with a pathetic mess for a story and the torture scenes. Call of Duty was at it's peak at 4, subsequent titles just stagnate the franchise.
As for the little "Are they fun" detail...
...no. Halo 3: ODST was stupid, so was Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops. I haven't played World at War and don't plan to, and i wholeheartedly believe that the Halo franchise died on a high note and that 343 Studios will simply let people cue up to rape the corpse.
But to be fair... at least they're not cover based. The Battlefield and Killzone franchises make Halo 3: ODST look like fucking Painkiller.
