Halo needs to move away from Spartans if it wants to survive

I believe Spartans are going to start weighing down the series and ruining it very soon. They are probably the most boring characters in the Halo universe, because they have no real involvement with the central problem of the franchise. Spartan II are raised from birth to be instinctive killers who follow orders, they might as well be robots. They care about the outcome because they have been trained to follow orders but they have no real emotional attachment to anything, if they win or lose their lives will remain the same, noting of real value to them is accomplished. There is no character arc.

Now they do have some feelings but they suppress them and it is kind of difficult to seem their reaction to things when they always wear visors. Halo Reach just made it more apparent how boring these supper soldiers could be. This is partially Bungie's fault for not taking any to flesh out the characters but it is also rather difficult to create characters for mindless killers.

The reason I think Master chief worked well was because of Cortana. Master chief was like the introverted husband who kept to himself while Cortana was the social wife who brought out the best in Chief. Essentially Cortana is the perfect sidekick who brought more to the series than Chief could by himself. They are the two halves of the same being; brains and bronze. I really hope that 343 focuses on their relationship in the coming trilogy because it is the only hope of them creating a compelling narrative, if they cop out with some more end of the world crap I will be seriously disappointed. But I digress.

To me the central aspect of Halo, what makes halo halo, is the conflict between the Humans and Covenant. There are so many interesting themes to explore.

The video I linked is called The Return and its just a short video describing an elite's experience in the war and how he feels lost in a world where he once felt he had a purpose. He is forced to cope with the meaningless slaughter that he carried out against the humans many years ago. He has returned to a glassed planet in order to reflect on what he has done.

Exploring how the loss of ones faith affects people is much more interesting than saving the universe. The video just shows the potential Halo has to create an interesting story even from the Covenant perspective.

This video is called The Mona Lisa. This series is a basic zombie story using the flood, however it is presented rather well. Later on you find out that ONI was experimenting on the Flood, which I find rather interesting because it raises the question, how far would you go in order to survive, what are you willing to lose to carry on?

Halo:ODST was another step in the right direction it put the player right in the middle of a conflict as regular soldiers. The conflict is much bigger than they are and are often powerless to resolve many situation. In fact all the missions in ODST revolved around the soldiers being on the defensive and running away. They are clearly being defeated and pushed out of the city. My only major complaints for ODST is that the Rookie had no voice. I think the game would have been infinitely better if they had given him a character. How he reacted to the situation he was in would tell us all we needed to know about the character while fleshing out the story. Leaving a black canvas for a player to project themselves on doesn't work very well and is kind of weak. If Bungie had put the time and resources they used for Reach into ODST, it would have been one of my favorite games of all time. My point is ODST showed me what kind of game Halo could be and the idea excites me.

However by bringing back Master Chief and this whole save the universe business I think a great opportunity is being lost to bring the Halo universe to a new level. Halo could be a whole lot deeper and it is sad to see 343 and Microsoft take the easy road out by by bring back a character that shouldn't have been brought back. I really want to see Halo go out on a high note but I can see that probably won't happen with the way things are going.

The whole point of Halo is to be a spartan.

Other wise its just Call of Duty: In space against aliens.

ODST is the only one without spartans done correctly.

um, except in the games, other spartans are only said about in the expanded universe, though I can get behind the idea of viewing the story from the standpoint of someone else other than a 7 foot tall geneticlly enhanced person.

A noble idea, but it's not going to happen any time soon.

Yep, they definitely need to make a game based exclusively on the covenant side of things, or just a game that isn't an fps. Reach was pretty damn good as the characters had more depth, but ODST was probably the most interesting in terms of characters so far (however cheesy it was).

There's a lot of potential that is never going to be used...I doubt 343 industries will innovate much.

I agree with you whole-heartedly. I find the Spartans to be incredibly boring characters. they can do some cool stuff but they're boring people. Mind, I'm only basing this on Halo 1-3 and the tiny bit of Reach that I saw round a mates house.
I do mean to play ODST, I reckon it could be very interesting.

If they move away from Spartans they would have to move to ODSTs. Halo ODST was a decent game that felt a bit rushed.

But to do that the whole way you progress would change. Rather than moving ahead of the line of attack you would move with the line of attack, this means bigger battles with more participants which means more NPCs for the game to control.

Would be difficult

On the one hand I agree that Cortana + Master Cheif was a perfect fit. Every line made by them was enhanced by the others presence, and they create that perfect partnership.

On the other hand, Halo can't lose spartans forever. The spartans are kind of what makes Halo stand out.

Spartans are the only means they have to combat the Covenant effectively, without them they'd probably have lost.

They're children that were kidnapped and then biologically and mechanically augmented then forced into being perfect soldiers. I'm pretty sure they're not going to have much personality outside of a few friendships.

Why not have a story that alternates between a spartan, and maybe an elite or ODST? It's ripping off Call of Duty, but it could work.

I agree with the OP. I personally feel that the series should have ended with Reach, but if the franchise is going to continue then it needs to explore new themes and gameplay to prevent stagnation. There's still lots of potential to inject new blood into the series rather than drag out the Chief yet again. Here's just a few ideas I can think of off the top of my head:

-A tactical squad-based FPS where you play as a common Marine a la the Brothers in Arms series.

-A stealth-oriented game about an Elite Spec Ops infiltrating various UNSC and ONI facilities.

-Take the space segment from Reach and expand it into a complete game.

If this means we'll never see Master Chief's face again, I'm in full support. I'd like to see more ODSTs, personally. Marines are just... people.

Well, look forward to Halo 4, 5 and 6. Probably all featuring Master Chief, the final(?) Spartan left alive.

I loved Halo Wars, and think it ought to have had a Covenant campaign.

I think he means focusing on stories that don't involve the Spartans. Nobody is arguing that they weren't necessary, but there are more stories to be told.

Sadly Spartans are what make the series but I agree wholeheartedly with the convenant backstory idea.

I remember watching the first couple of episodes of the halo anime (I had shit all else to watch) and there was an episode about an elite who went from training soldiers to questioning what the prophets told him and progressed to him becoming an arbiter out for revenge for his family. And frankly that episode had a ton more depth than the other episodes I saw involving Spartans

I'm still confused where this series can even go now since after Halo 3 Chief is alone and god knows where, so all there can really be is him against an army of something or other alone

Nintendo needs to move away from Italian Plumbers if it wants to survive.
Microsoft can easily make the new trilogy sell well, but telling a story that doesn't need to be told will just cheapen the franchise.
