All the questions you list as having are things that anyone who knows anything beyond what the games have should know. It's fairly common knowledge.
But why would they release all your "common knowledge" out side what the games have? A game can be a story-telling experience now, they have writers and the data space to hold dialogue trees and cut scenes. A narrative should weave the story into the game play, not force you to pick up two dozen shitty novels to know what the hell is going on.

Nothing to add to the thread, but seriously? A week?
No sarcasm, genuine question. A week?

Really? You needed to post THAT? Just leave please... No one wants to go there.
I don't see what of that was wrong. Console shooters aren't known for there epic storytelling or indepth worlds with deeply fleshed out character, like you find in other genres. It's natural that the storylines aren't going to be as well thought out or even as good as other genres.

And please, let's not be insulting, eh?
I still don't think it's a valid excuse. If all developers thought like that, we would be stuck with a basic "Shoot this gun at that" story when playing a shooter. Surely there's no harm in at least trying to craft an interesting and engaging story, regardless of the genre.

Bioshock was a console shooter, and everyone raves endlessly about how fantastic that story was. (the first one anyway, your mileage may vary with Bioshock 2)

EDIT: Fuck, ninja'd.

i can see how someone who has no idea what halo is wouldn't be able to pick that up, they never explained anything at the beginning

HOWEVER, what would say to someone who's never watched the first 2 pirates of the carribean movies after they just watched the 3rd one and they go "i don't get it, that was dumb"

you see, halo: reach expects you to know some stuff prior to playing the game. it's not that hard either, i mean, they had front page on friggin youtube for a short time, and a short time on frontpage on youtube means everyone get's at least a glimpse at it.

plus, if you're not a fan of halo, why buy halo: reach? your GF on the other hand, you're a cruel BF for draging her into that, should of taken her to see scott pilgrim instead, she would of enjoyed that.

now at the end of your rant, you pretty much explained why you couldn't follow the story, YOU SKIPPED THE FUCKING CUTSCENES!!!!
THAT'S LIKE WATCHING THE GODFATHER PART 1 AND COMPLAINING THAT THERE WEREN'T ANY ZOMBIES IN IT, DUDE, WTF???
in one scene, one of the spartans is like "yes sir, the covenant are on reach" and the guy on the screen is like "....my god" THAT SHOULD SUM UP WHERE YOU ARE AND WHO THEY ARE. plus, halo fans know all that already.

but you're totally right, everyone is one-dimensional except for jorge. i personally liked the story for ODST a lot more because of the whole relationship between buck and dare, plus there was that secret back story with the audio logs which somehow played a part with getting the rookie back with his squad, and the back story was great.

It has a story, not as complex as other games but it still has one.

I like to think the Halo games focus more on being fun than being all story driven.(Just my thought) Its one of the reason I love them so much.
When a game hits 4 and a half games, it should have some kind of story. That's not to say that 1-3 doesn't have a story. They did a pretty good job of making us pay attention and follow a few choice characters. With this one, they drop all new characters on us (which isn't totally unexpected, since it's a prequel) and try to give them a level of humanity by occasionally having them remove their helmets while talking. They worked the gameplay very well, but they were really lazy on making a beginning story to the whole thing.
I agree with Bungie being somewhat lazy with the story. I also think that Bungie could of done a lot better with the characters. They were good but I really never get to fully know them like the Spartan Emile. They did a good job with Jorge in the beginning, but then they just stop suddenly.
You know, I was really hoping we'd get to know Emile more. He was the kind of character who would've done well in context to the rest of them, but all we had were one liners.

Do you know what a story is?

I suggest you check a dictionary, because I'm pretty sure what Halo: Reach has does indeed qualify as a story. You may think it was confusing, vague and lacking in details. But many stories are like this. Some great ones.

If you do a genuine, objective analysis of the story of all Bungie's Halo games, you'll see that they all have a strongly defined narrative that always gives you a reason as to why the player character is doing what he is doing. Yes, I said all of them. Including Reach.

OK.

Now, i knew what i was doing when i wrote that post.

I added just enough flamebait with my rant to get the attention of fanboys and trolls alike. I understand that perhaps had i worded it differently, and not ranted on about examples that give the simpletons something to focus on and ignore the point completley, i may have gotten a little more creative argument in here.

What i was not expecting was this trainwreck of a thread...

You people, other than a small few, seem completley incapeable of understanging the damned point of the rant. Im going to adress a few issues here that have been raised repeatedly....

I DID NOT SKIP ANY CUTSCENES! I ENJOIED THEM, AS I MENTIONED, THEY LOOKED DAMNED COOL!

I did not mean the commander of your unit, i ment the commander guy who you spend the first half of the game taking orders from, or fixing something so you can take more orders from him and then forget about him in the 3rd act.

You all need to stop justifying it with crap like "IT WAS FOR FANS"!!! That does not invalidate my point. I am a fan and I loved it, but there are different levels of fan.
I should not need to read several novels about video game franchises in order to understand who and what these characters are in the game i paid 60 euros for, in a series of games i have spent simmilar ammounts of money on in the past.
Give me enough to work with, or just dont bother. Im ok with both. Good story or no story.... Just not this self important drivel.

Ok, yes i conceed - There is a "story" in the same sense as a 5 page childrens book has a story. There is not however a story in the sense that everyone and every review are all raving about. It informs you of nothing - Simply where to go.

I also admit that when entering a 4th game in the series, one is generally expected to know a few things. This is fine and well, however this IS a prequel.
Prequels explain how things came to light.
This explains nothing and is not understandable in its entirety by those who have played every single halo game to date. It requires research and extra reading. This is not a good story. Would you not rant about a movie you just saw if you had to read a seperate book to know who particular entities are?

Also, i do not believe the game was apocolyptic at all in scale.
The "glassing" of that city was so tame we managed to take an elevator. I have played Modern Warfare 1 and F.E.A.R - I know what a city blowing up in first person should look like in order for maximum awesome.
I mean, in the second last mission, i was sneaking back into the place i visited in the second mission with a small contingent of marines. This is not an action one typicaly takes as the planet burns around you.
Also to the dope who pointed out i should look at the "totally awesome battles in the distance". A few banshees floating around like flys in the distance, does not an epic atmosphere make.... More to the point, Why the hell arent we in the middle of those awesome battles?

However i digress. I was simply posting because my girlfriend brought to light some issues with the plot that i would not have even noticed because i was so much of a halo fanboy zombie like the rest of you that i couldnt see just how bad it was. It was like a slap in the face realisation. As if everything i had loved was a lie.

Oh.... and I KNOW WHAT A BANSHEE IS YOU TWITS, I WAS QUOTING ONE OF THE THINGS MY GIRLFRIEND ASKED!!! - You all missed the POINT of the quote as an example. They begin throwing technical jargon at you from the get go.

To those of you who answered my question about Halsey, thankyou, i had no idea who she was as she was never mentioned in any of the other Halo games, nor was the existence of a spartan III model.

In short - Defenders of the story are blind beyond words.

I could have switched the order of any of the missions and it would have still made as much sense as before.

Yeah, you obviously don't remember or even read the Halo novels. The backstory of the spartan program has ALREADY been told time after time, along with the setting of planet Reach and it's little secrets. Why would Bungie retell everything that's already been said? The novels are there for that particular reason, to fill in the stuff that was left out of the game so it wouldn't be so long and dull after a while. Saying that there's no backstory or explanation when you choose not to read the sources that have that information, well that's just lazy on your part.

My friend you are indeed wrong.

If I'm remembering correctly, it is actually in the neighborhood of 2 months at least.
