This is currently an on-going debate among me and my friends.
My more 'metalhead' friends who are into the likes of Strapping Young Lad, Metallica, DevilDriver, etc. say that band such as Bury Your Dead, Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember, Architects etc. (the entire 'hardcore' genre really) are not metal. I've been led to believe that a fair amount of people on the escapist quite like a bit of metal. So what's your opinion?

Is Hardcore equal or not to metal?
& is hardcore deserving of the same calibre of respect as metal has?

Try avoid insulting bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, even if you don't like them, they're simply one of the more well known 'hardcore' bands. & Don't launch into a rant about how one of the bands i mentioned are deathcore or something. They're all a form of hardcore so let's pretend 'hardcore' is incorporating deathcore, mathcore and whatever other core you can think of.

Hardcore is not metal.

Hardcore is a sub-genre of punk if anything.

I was a metalhead in my youth but I despise "hardcore", "metalcore" etc. I can see why other people like it, but what really appeals to me about metal is good riffs and the metalcore guys don't really have catchy, memorable riffing. Also that screaming thing they do is so tedious, I'm so over screamed vocals. Maybe back when I was a 15-year old angst ridden virgin I would have loved metalcore, but not these days.

I thought hardcore was a sub-genre of metal? So ergo, they are the same thing?
see, that's exactly what I thought but the metalheads I know think it's a totally different genre.

good man!
ever saw them live?
I've saw them three times and met them all each time. I should have saw them 4 times but they pulled out of the Kerrang Tour earlier this year

they've already thoroughly conquered america, they should be over in sweden and the like anytime soon. :)

... are you me from the future?
Yes. I am in fact several people on this forum, in the future. Recognising this, I started a thread to help me/you. ----> http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.117161?page=1

Warning: following any advice in the linked thread may have a side-effect of causing you to lose interest in metalcore.

Hardcore [punk] is/was originally a louder, angrier version of punk, think bands like "dead Kennedys and Minor Threat. Nowadays a lot of the time Hardcore gets mixed in with metalcore, which is hardcore with metal influences (which pretty much means metal with breakdowns) post-hardcore, think what post-punk did to punk and apply that to hardcore and emo, more melodic and emotional.

Note: Hardcore isn't my genre of choice so all of this is all based on a bit of knowledge and a fair bit of personal opinion. Please don't name check a bunch of bands to prove me wrong.

Because the meaning of "hardcore" has changed so much, I'd call BMTH "metalcore", rather than "hardcore" so as not to confuse them with the 1980s "hardcore punk" scene (Black Flag etc).

That is the stuff people would consider Hardcore in the Netherlands if you asked them tbh. (or any subgenre but at least this type of music)

To be honest I despise these attempts at labeling music, most bands do not fit into a single category anyway.
Where you draw you influence from is, in my eyes, not important.
The important thing, for me anyway, is that you play with "soul". It makes all the difference in the world.

That is the main reason that Metallica is not as good as they used to be, they lack the soul they once had.

But it now I stray far away from the topics, so:
OT: Metal and Hardcore are different, but they can overlap each other.

see, what i just dont get is that hardcore has A LOT of similarities to metal but metalheads avoid it like the plague and run their mouths about it at every opportunity.
If i wear my emmure tshirt, one of them will start insulting Emmure, and so on.
