Seriously, how could you even call Muse a metal band? I'm a fan, excluding their radio singles, and they do occasionally use metal-esque riffs, but they're much more vastly influenced by Radiohead than Slayer.
I said "very, very soft metal and more like rock. I don't quite know how to categorize them, but they must, at least partly, fit under rock. Some kind of it, at least.

Nowadays I'd put Hardcore Metal as a subgenre of Metal. Metal used to be Iron Maiden, now it's Hatebreed. *shrugs* Needs to be something to differentiate between them.

Note: Bring Me The Horizon isn't too bad. I object to all the U18's there are for them.. It's like Underoath or a Twilight fest. Just no.. But still an ok band.

I think Tool and System of a Down are metal, but that's just because I can actually listen to them. Now where is that flame shield?
Technically Tool are generally considered Alt. SoaD are.. No idea.. Alt? Not punk, metal.. Comparing them to Iron Maiden or Hatebreed doesn't work..

Awesome bands but not metal according to the music shops at least.

Bring Me the Horizon *shiver* can't think of a shittier band...

OT: Metal is becoming so diverse that it's really your opinion on what is and not metal.

As someone from Alabama, Hardcore and Emo are often associated with each other and differentiated from metal and collectively called "Scene". Hell, Scene has started becoming the hair/dressing style for the new kids (Colorful long hair [Like glam and emo mixed together] for girls, short hair and long bangs for boys, piercings, colorful clothing [usually either very dark or very bright to the point of neon colors] or scene band shirts). My friend who is really into scene has even started labeling some of the new girls/guys that 'dress scene' as "Fake Ass Scene Bitches", and he dresses more metrosexual/classic rock fan (depending on the day) than anything for someone who considers himself scene.Apparently there's a band scene for "Scene" bands in Gadsden.

I'd put more stock into the "shops" than, say, Gamestop, depending on the shop, but when I listen to Tool I certainly don't think of Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins. All the true metalheads I know consider Tool to be more alt than metal.

I'm more into hybrid/experimental stuff, anyway. I really can't get into most metal bands whose singers only growl. I like a combo of singing and screaming. I recently checked out In This Moment and was very pleasantly surprised that, in spite of not really trying anything too "out there" as a whole unit, there (very sexy) singer used a healthy combination of melodic singing and gut-wrenching screams.

Hardcore is not metal.

Hardcore is a sub-genre of punk if anything.
Is it? Where I come from, this is hardcore:
That's Dutch quality music right there. Now if you would hand me that towel over there, I need to stop my ears from bleeding. If you'll excuse me, I'll have to crawl up in foetal position in that corner over there and cry like a little girl to recover from listening to about 10 seconds of that...sound.

But I guess that in this thread, hardcore is something else entirely. Well, it can't be any worse than what I posted, at least it's somewhat instrumental.

Bring me the Horizon are not a hardcore band.

and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fvu951up_0

are just two examples of Hardcore bands.
if thats Hardcore than it is most certainly not Metal... not at all.
And I think thats the thing about Hardcore I don't like, that theres too much of them taking their music and what theyre doing seriously. Its like, really? Youre hooligans? and this is basically pub rock most of the time.
Its pretty good, but theres also A LOT of things worse.

what I have always loved about metal is that no one really seems to be taking any of it seriously. Or at least the bands that I like. The ones that sing about crazy ass shit and suddenly go to an epic metal cry (Judas Priest ftw) and its just hilarious. They know how to entertain

Hardcore, like Europe's Black Metal, is just another stem of the great Metal Tree of Death. I do not think it is as good as the old Metal Forefathers, but it does not mean it is not part of the genre.

Hardcore is short for hardcore punk. It was and remains an outgrowth of punk music, dominated by a punk sensibility more than a metal one in terms of both attitude and music composition. End of story.

My favorite band is Avenged Sevenfold. They're classified as hardcore but alot of there songs are really close to metal if they aren't already metal. Their first couple of albums are screaming metal but their most recent ones are actually more diverse in sound. The only problems with metal I have are that alot of the bands sound too much alike and alot of them the vocals can be really unbearable.

Hardcore is not the same. There is metalcore which is a blend of the two. Metal usually has much more pronounced guitars and better riffs. Hardcore will have less emphasis on guitars and have breakdowns every 20 seconds. IMO metal takes a lot more talent because you don't play teh same riff the entire song but I guess thats for another topic. Really tho, metalcore is teh best of both worlds which leads to awesomeness like August Burns Red and As I Lay Dying.

Well I associate hardcore to mean hardcore punk which pretty much blows metal out of the water, I mean they sing about magic vikings and feeling angry and hardcore sings about real issues and feelings. In a musical sense it differs widely some bands can have some awesome stuff while others just try and make the instruments go twang a lot loudly. Still hardcore punk gets destroyed by old, real punk which had all the emotion and power but also had people who could play good music. Still thats my opinion

Though if hardcore has a different meaning in metal then I have no idea, I don't listen to anything more metal then black Sabbath.

Metal is a broad canvas, and what most people consider "hardcore" is not so, it's metalcore, which is heavy metal inspired (inspired, see, not copying) by hardcore punk bands. Unfortunately, the terms have used interchangeably to the point of distortion. So the metalcore (which is, in itself becoming broader with narrowing down into things like deathcore for BMTH) you listen to is metal, along with the dozens upon dozens of other sub-sub-sub-genres.

People who cry "itz shit, not metal, lololol" are usually quite pretentious in their tastes, and refuse to associate with it. Doesn't help when the genre genuinely is shit, but metalcore has a few good artists that trve kvlt metalheads would probably like to murder.

I don't see why one genre has to > another genre ¬_¬ I'm not really a set meal kinda guy, more of a buffet adventurer... if you understand the metaphor.
