obviously, any game that has a super-simulated hardcore difficulty. like Arma or Operation Flashpoint, etc.

CoD4 on veteran was one of the biggest challenges of my life, next to learning how to use the big boy potty. CoD5 is also really hard. i havent bothered beating that one. i got pretty tired of getting 7 grenades lobbed at me in less than 2 seconds.

Halo: Reach on legendary was pretty tough... definitely the hardest Halo game. the only thing that made it a little easier was the absence of those damned jackal snipers.

and i can only imagine Demon Souls is pretty hard on the highest difficulty setting. never played it myself.

i usually dont bother playing the hardest difficulty settings unless there are a ton of achievements that require it and im feeling a little achievement-whorish.

the only games i always play on the hardest difficulty is Halo. (not every single time, obviously)

The metal gear solid series some of the bosses are nigh unbeatable without cheating, the worst part is its a stealth game so 90% is just taking your time and being careful but those bosses dear god, take for example mgs 2 you won't see a healing item until your 95% done with the game. RE 4 on pro was a challenge but still relatively fair, ninja giaden sigma I barely got through it on normal probably didn't help that I didn't like the game but god was it hard, old school fallout 1&2 combat was bad enough on normal crank it up and watch the chump with a pea shooter get a critical hit that nearly kills you and knocks you down while your wearing armor that allows you to curbstomp anyone not wearing it with ease its damn hard and humiliating.

What!?! No Touhou yet?

The thing about Touhou is that it sits between hardcore and masocore difficulty, in that it never kills you unfairly or with unexplained mechanics. That's what makes me want to keep playing it more than a shmup that kills you just to gain noteriety as a sadistic game or to steal your coins at an arcade.

Interesting fact: The closest I have ever got to beating this boss is getting to about 9:15 in the video. Yes, I was pissed.

Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood

Fuck me, that game is hard. I can't beat it.

I was doing really good, I beat all the main levels, then I had to beat a god damn boss rush mode. Fine, I can do that. But you know what's waiting for you at the END of the boss rush? 100 clones of yourself. No, seriously, you have to beat 100 copies of yourself. Right after the boss rush.

I think I'm going to quote Yahtzee (who was quoting someone else at the time), and say, "No chance you unreasonable dicks".

god mode the hardest dmc 3 difficulty (no scratch that anything besides normal in the revamped version)
This is the kind of hard that all games should forever be judged by
Yeah, no kidding. I had a challenge to beat it on Normal on the Special Edition ... The people who can beat it on the hardest difficulty on the normal edition deserve to have golden statues made in their honor by Capcom ...

I heard that DMC4's Hell or Hell mode is even harder ... I dare not look at it, my eyes are not worthy!

Any of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games, though they're more than hard enough already. In the first one you had the exact same amount of HP as your enemies if I remember correctly and in the second one you had very slightly more but they also started throwing grenades in that one, so that didn't really change much. I haven't played Call of Pripyat but I've read that it's not much easier, though apparently difficulty works somewhat differently in that one so that the easier difficulties are easier and the harder ones are harder.

Atari/most classics too many games that are impossible hard especially considering you only have a certain many lives before you have to restart from the start, compared to today hard difficulties are not much you'll rage but you will finish it still pretty quick, only game I'd note for this gen is demon souls.

This has already been said a number of times but COD4 and its infinately respawning enemies was not fun at all. Probably the most patience trying experience I've ever had in gaming, I finished it but only through perceverance, no amount of skill can get you unharmed through some of those cheap kill levels!

I would never play some of those levels again, god damn Charlie Don't Surf and that room full of TV's (you all know what I'm talking about)

I was very happy with Zealot on dead space 2. I felt like I couldn't waste a single shot the entire game or I would be reduced to punching enemies and throwing their own limbs at them.

I read a few people who said Call of Duty. This is an incorrect response. The difficulty in Call of Duty is just a way to change how many grenades each person has (It's over 9000 is the correct answer) and the aim with which the enemies throw them. Call of Duty was reduced to sitting in one spot waiting for grenades to fall on you for 30 seconds while you threw them back at the enemies.

Crysis is also an incorrect response; I don't REALLY remember Crysis 1, but I don't remember it being at all challenging. Crysis 2 is a joke because you can stealth through all of the levels.

* The video on Touhou looks apt to make me throw a monitor through the window.

Devil May Cry 4's Hell or Hell mode. As far as I'm aware, only three people have ever beaten it. You die in one hit, the enemies are as difficult as the highest difficulty level, Dante Must Die.
i'm pretty sure many more people have beaten it. Have you seen any of those truestyle videos?

It's insane what kind of things these people can pull off.

fallout new Vegas on very hard and have hardcore mode on, even the tutorial is hard your limbs cripple in a strong wind, geckos take 4-5 direct hits with a caravan shotgun and you don't want to know how hard a troupe of legion assassins can be when all you friends die and both you legs and arms are crippled...and you only have a vermin rifle.... that's all out of ammo

Sonic robo blast 2 (fangame). both versions of the game are perfectly fine up until ultimate difficulty, and then the game is hell, in the first version, I can get to the last boss and almost beat it, but get hit as I was landing the last hit and die.

Did I mention you get 1 life and no rings? And the last boss has a rotating spike shield that is very difficult to get past without getting hit. And when you do hit you often ricochet into the shield and die?

And in the second version the boss AI has changed so it is extremely difficult to get past the third level boss, and I have seen, what? 2 videos of people beating the last boss?

Oh, and you can't save either, or get continues.

I thought Mass Effect 2's insanity mode was difficult but manageable, but fuck Mass Effect 1, I can't even pass the first level.
Yeah the only thing that got me half way through ME1 on insanity was the ability to use the stupid AI to my advantage. Such as picking them off one by one as they are stuck in cover, but once I messed up and got them to mob me I was screwed if I didn't have a crowd control class.

OT: I think pretty much any civilization game on the deity level. It seems like I am just building my first warrior and he explores to the top of a mountain and looks at what he can see and notices a column of tanks rolling towards my city....an exaggeration but not too far from the truth.

I"m a massive completionist. I go for every difficulty, every (single player) achievement. That said, I'm not even going to attempt Halo Reach Legendary or Red Faction Guerilla above Casual.

The more difficult difficulties I've encoutered also include Forza 3 without anti-lock brakes (holy shit how does this car what the fuck), Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on Expert, and Hitman: Blood Money above Normal.

Persona 3 was already a hard as hell game, but then the PSP version added the Maniax difficulty level. Holy shit. Enemies do at least twice as much damage as normal, will frequently get pre-emptive strikes even when they shouldn't, actively target your party's weaknesses for extra turns, and the game prevents you from carrying over your compendium or other new game+ bonuses so you can't cheese your way through it.
