Only once--the demo for Brutal Legend clinched it for me. (Of course, it did it by not even mentioning the RTS bullshit, so...yeah.)

But normally I'll already be mostly committed to buying a game, and the demo is just that last little push I need to convince myself to spend sixty bucks on it.

Always.

I've avoided some real duds by trying the demos, and been turned onto some gems from them too.

I'd never have known Red Faction: Geurrilla was so much fun were it not for the awesome demo.

Any time I see threads about demos I think about that lying little bastard of a demo Tim Schafer gave us.

'Hey, look at me! I'm an awesome, set-pice based hack'n'slash!'

Get the game...

'Surprise, *****! I'm a shoddy, badly explained cryptic and frustrating RTS in disguise! SCREW YOU!'

It doesnt happen frequently, but tried the Bulletstorm demo and decided that the full game will be worth my time and money.

But it still has an awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome soundtrack.

Spider Queen Boss, anyone?

And this was before all the RTS bullshit kicked in, so it's won't dig up bad memories.

Demos do help. Mostly in informing me that I have an inexplicable distaste towards the "Gritty, brown War FPSs" that makes me unable to enjoy them.
Its a shame, really- I want to like things like Call of Duty, but I just... don't.

Yeah that boss fight was the peak of the game for me... the point where I thought it was gonna be one of my all time favorites.

And you're right the soundtrack is sublime... driving around in your HotRod listening to Megadeth and Sabbath was so fun

If my save hadn't gotten corrupted, I'd load up my 100% save (doing all the side stuff is actually rather fun, since they don't involve shitty RTS controls!), and drive around right now. Cruising the world, and rocking out.

Hell, I may do it anyway with a new game save or something.

The first demos that come to mind where they made me want to buy the game are Mafia 2 and Battlefield 1943. The last demo I played was RUSE and I have to say, I am considering getting it for the 360. An RTS on a console is a rarity for me, but I enjoyed the demo so much and my PC can't run it.

That's another thing... why do they only allow you one save file? That sucked.

I know what you mean though... it's one of those games I'll never sell because it's a nice one to just jump into and soak up the feeling of it.

You keep changing your avatar! I didn't recognise you. Are you psyched about Skyrim?

Yep - one of the first games I wanted was because of a demo - the first Tomb Raider. The demo was on one of those CDs on the front of a PC magazine (not sure what one), and I was sad when the demo was over. My mum played some of the demo, and got the game for me lol (think she liked the puzzle aspect of the game).

WoW I wouldn't have got into, if there wasn't a 10-day trial. Before I played the trial, I wondered why someone would play monthly for a game, but after playing for a day or two, I decided to buy the game and set up my account.

Can't remember any other demos atm.

Ninja'd. I had really high hopes for Bulletstorm, but the demo was just so underwhelming. It only had about 10 minutes worth of actual gameplay from a portion of the game that just wasn't all that awesome as it was hyped up to be, which is not a good thing in my book. Yeah, you're supposed to play it multiple times to try and figure out how to rack up the highest score, but since I'm not the kind of person who enjoys that kind of thing the demo had very little appeal to me.

Outside of that, the Multiplayer Beta Demo for Crysis 2 changed my decision from "maybe I should get it" to "I definitely should buy this eventually." I just found it to be sooo much fun, which surprised me considering I was more hyped for the Bulletstorm demo and not so much the Crysis 2 demo.

Always, although I'm cautious about them. I felt let down when I played the inFamous demo, and put off buying it for ages. The demo gave you regenerating electricity and lightning storm from the beginning, and it really took away from the experience, so when I finally got the game I was surprised at how much better it was.
Now I find it difficult to tell whether a demo is really representative of the full game.

Actually, demos frequently affect my decisions. For example, The Force Unleashed 2.
I liked the first one enough to get the sequel, when it finally came out. Oh look! They have a demo for the sequel! ::plays the demo:: What the hell was that piece of crap I just played. Now I'm glad that I didn't waste my time.

Certainly, as specially when I was younger (I remember buying the Official PlayStation 1 magazine for years in the mid-late 90s which had a demo every month of games). Since I was a child and £40 felt like a hell of a lot more money then it is now, demos were the main way I could gather which game to buy, since if i didn't like it, it would be over 2 months until I could get another.

Now I don't think its my main decider of whether to get a game, I think in order its something like:

1) Word of mouth from friends/forums.
2) Reviews.
3) Demos
4) Trailers/gameplay vids
