Yes. I bought Costume Quest Deathspank, Brutal Legend and Chains of Olympus because of the demo. I avoided a lot of games because of a crappy demo.

mhm I ended up buying the first deadspace because the demo was awesome and im not buying bulletstorm because in my opinion the demo was just shit. I would like for there to be a thing where developers Have to make demos so Im not buying there potentially shitty game and completely waste my 60$ such as fable 2 witch sucked soooo hard...in my opinion.

The Too Human demo made sure I never bought the game, even though I was really excited for it. (I mean, how the hell do you ruin that concept? It was such a great idea!)
Easily, by making it into a shitty game.

I just recently played the "Magicka" Demo because I wasn't sure whether I'd like the game but after playing it, I was certain that it's a great game.
The same with a game named "the Polynomial: Space of Music" on Steam.

I decided to look into getting Amnesia: the Dark Descent, but I decided I should try out the free demo (despite being enticed by all the things that I heard were in the game already).
After the demo kept crashing before I actually saw the main menu due to some support problems, I came to the conclusion that the game itself might not work too well and didn't buy it.

I've seen it a lot more recently that people are complaining about a lack of demos for things and I was wondering does it actually affect your end decision?

I can only think of a couple of demos I've played in that past 3-4 years (I don't think I played any demos between about 1995-2006 when I made my steam account) that actually got me to buy a game I wasn't going to get before. Jolly Rover, a fairly decent point and click, and Lara Croft and the Guardian of light. Every other demo I got for a game didn't change my mind at all; if I was going to get it, I got it, if I wasn't going to get it, I didn't.

So how about you guys? Does a demo make that much of a difference or is it just a thing a lot of people demand but doesn't actually change minds?

Of course! The earliest demo I remember was the Tekken 3 demo that came out way back in a special case which I preserved for when I actually bought the game. I've downloaded countless demos since then and pirated a lot of games to test them out. Mirror's Edge was a good example of a game I pirated and enjoyed the opening of, so bought the game (don't know if there were demos available, but torrents there certainly were), and there are shit loads of games I've pirated, played for half an hour or so, and then deleted because I didn't like. I even bought Peggle because the demo was so damned addictive!

Definitely, BioShock is the first one that comes to mind. Also Prey, Quake III, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, FEAR 1, Zelda Wind Waker (a demo is included in the copy of the Collector's Edition for the Cube), F-Zero GX (I played the demo disc that was included with Mario Kart: Double Dash!!), Resident Evil 2, MediEvil, Metal Gear Solid (I miss those demo discs), Guild Wars, Eve Online, Devil May Cry 4 (PC version), and Shadow Complex.

The only demo I can think of that dissuade me from buying a game was FEAR 2 and Soul Calibur IV.

Hells yes. The shadow of the Colossus demo convinced me to get it. Boy was I smart. One of my best games.

Yes, demos have encouraged/discouraged all sorts of purchases.

Lack of demos also discourages a lot of purchases, I figure if they're not willing to showcase what's going on, it must suck.

Something I think might be good but doesn't have a demo, user reviews. cut out all the highest rated and lowest rated reviews and pick one from each number in between to cut out most of the extreme bias.

Demo that made me want to buy the game - Left 4 Dead 2. I loved the first one, but wasn't sure on whether to get the second one. Played the demo, LOVED IT! Left 4 Dead 2 is one of my top 5 favourite games of all time, and the demo ensured that it was a game that I wanted

Demo that made me want to avoid a game - Crysis 2. It was only a multiplayer beta on Xbox Live, but the texture pop up was insane, the graphics were nowhere near as good as Crytek were saying they would be, and the controls were pretty unresponsive at points. Yes, it was only a beta, but it has still affected whether I want to get the game or not. If some of the problems haven't been fixed, I won't be buying it.

Yup!

I'm not purchasing ARMA II because of the mouse lag problems. I'm glad that I avoided buying it when such a game killing bug still hasn't been fixed.

On the whole I really respect it when a games company gives players a chance to try the game out before you buy it. They are making a genuine effort to counter piracy issues without resorting to tighter and tighter DRM controls.
