I recently got roped into a conversation with this really annoying guy who considered himself a "true gamer" and all he talked about were video games. We got along alright at first because we were both Saints Row fans, but he started talking about all these other games that I'd never bothered to play. So I kept trying to change the subject to stuff we could talk about like music "Oh yeah, my iPod is loaded with game soundtracks."

So I was like "iPod, yay. I can talk about that." and so I told him about some of the fun indie games on the app store market, and how there are even a lot of good free games if you keep an eye out for sales.

Oh man, when he heard me talk about indie app store games, he damn near lost it. I may as well have told him

The guy snapped and said I was a poser gamer, despite the fact that I do enjoy games from all consoles and genres and have been playing them my whole life (no, I don't actually consider myself to be a gamer though) So of course he told me that indie crap games like "Angry Turds." (yes, he actually said that...) weren't real games.

So I asked him a legitimate question. If a game like Limbo had been on the AppStore instead of Xbox Live, would that have meant it automatically sucks? His response, much to my surprise was "Hell yes!"

I don't mind talking to gamers, in fact almost all of my friends, online and off play video games, and they are a good conversation piece. But the level of elitism about them can be really annoying, and it's even harder when you run into that gamer who has nothing else to talk about except games.

I kept trying to talk to the guy about other topics. Movies, books, TV, but he either kept bringing it back to gaming, or brushed it off like those topics were somehow beneath him.

Has anyone else ever had to put up with someone like that?

Yea, I hate those kind of people. Elitism in any thing not just gaming is never a good personality trait. I hate cocky people in general. I'll talk about games to anyone no matter how big of a gamer they are or not. I can recommend other games based on their tastes, but I never think they are inferior just because I know more about games than they do.

I have a lot of friends with far different tastes than mine when it comes to TV, movies, music, and gaming. Even though I like something they don't its not because its better, its just different opinions.

Sure, with close friends we sometimes joke about other's interests. I get made fun of for liking folk metal and JRPGs, but I never take it seriously.

I can't say I've been there exactly, but it's not really anything that's specific to gamers. Any area where there is an enthusiast level of devotion, which can be in pretty much anything, has the same sort of thing. From music nerds to movie buffs to sports nuts (IMO, possibly the worst of the bunch), it's never fun to stuck in a "conversation" with an elitist snob in any facet.

He speaks from his world, a world where enjoyment only comes from the Ambrosia of Video Games.

Do not hate him because he will never understand simple joys such as Plants v. Zombies/My Little Pony/or Riding your bike on a summer day.

He was just some guy I got stuck talking to at a party, with any luck I'm not gonna see him again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a friendly guy, and I like talking to people but...if you're only gonna talk about one subject, it gets really boring really fast.

As usual, I can find one person who sums up my basic thoughts in a neat little quotable package. If being a "true gamer" means becoming a sickening elitist, then I'll stick with "casually" playing my Xbox. Unfortunately, my dad and brother are like this. Not to the extent described, but they're sitting a reasonable distance down that path. I figured I'd just leave them to it and focus on achieving a zen enlightenment or something.
