I recently got roped into a conversation with this really annoying guy who considered himself a "true gamer" and all he talked about were video games. We got along alright at first because we were both Saints Row fans, but he started talking about all these other games that I'd never bothered to play. So I kept trying to change the subject to stuff we could talk about like music "Oh yeah, my iPod is loaded with game soundtracks."
So I was like "iPod, yay. I can talk about that." and so I told him about some of the fun indie games on the app store market, and how there are even a lot of good free games if you keep an eye out for sales.
Oh man, when he heard me talk about indie app store games, he damn near lost it. I may as well have told him
The guy snapped and said I was a poser gamer, despite the fact that I do enjoy games from all consoles and genres and have been playing them my whole life (no, I don't actually consider myself to be a gamer though) So of course he told me that indie crap games like "Angry Turds." (yes, he actually said that...) weren't real games.
So I asked him a legitimate question. If a game like Limbo had been on the AppStore instead of Xbox Live, would that have meant it automatically sucks? His response, much to my surprise was "Hell yes!"
I don't mind talking to gamers, in fact almost all of my friends, online and off play video games, and they are a good conversation piece. But the level of elitism about them can be really annoying, and it's even harder when you run into that gamer who has nothing else to talk about except games.
I kept trying to talk to the guy about other topics. Movies, books, TV, but he either kept bringing it back to gaming, or brushed it off like those topics were somehow beneath him.
Has anyone else ever had to put up with someone like that?
