I often get shunned because of my accent, mainly because people reckon I sound like an American, and where I am that unfortunately isn't a very good thing. In thinking that I am American (Only an eighth) the morons in this place who seem to have a hate to Americans, whenever they're in one of their stupid rants about how much they'd like to take a leak all over the red, white and blue over stupid things, the conversation always ends in them pulling the old "Just because you have an accent which makes us assume you are an American, were gonna say you're American so what would you know card when you attempt to interfere with logic". And my background is a fair bit Croatian, and I'm in a class with a boy who has a strong Serbian heritage, and sense of pride towards Serbia. Unless you don't know your history, Serbia sort of has it in for Croatia, and considering the fact that this guy would jerk off to the flag if he could, he's often dug at my Croatian background. Though the guys name is Dushan, considering his nickname I'd say he got the shit end of the stick.

I happen to be a young white male so I have absolutely *nothing* to ***** about. But I'm gonna ***** about it anyway...

...on second thought, maybe not. I've had a good life and the occasional comment that gets thrown in my direction doesn't deserve mentioning.

I'm a white male, I suffer no discrimination which is nice, still one of my friends is both black and gay and you wouldn't believe the amount of shit he gets from dickheads (though most of it is because of his sexuality as opposed to his race.) Nice to know Britain is still largely homophobic and stupid.

Well I'm a white straight property owner, I think it's physically impossible to discriminate against me. I do get bullshit about being intelligent enough to be an atheist though. also why the hell would you know anything about socialism? the third Reich was a fascist regime not a socialist one.
Sorry for being off topic, but could you please explain to me how your "intelligent" simply for being atheist?
I can't because you have your causality switched.
Ok, perhaps I'm understanding you wrong, but it seems to me you said you get discriminated against because you are intelligent enough to be atheist. As in you have required intelligence to be atheist, if that is not what you meant, please explain your self to me.
you'll figure it out soon enough
Just so you know, I thought this conversation was HILARIOUS. XD

Well unfortunately i have.. see i am Turkish.Actually i am Bulgarian-Turkish.. and in Bulgaria turks don't get much respect of they're own authority,if you know what i mean..Here's some history: 500 bloody years ago,Bulgaria(now small country in Europe, then a major Empire) got taken over by the Osmans(today's Turkey) and from then on till 1877 it's been under Osman/Turkish control (or slavery, call it whatever you want) after that, thanks to the russians bulgaria free'd it's self from "The Turkish Plague" (as they call it)... Now,more than a 100 years afterwards,WE the "not-have-anything-to-do-with-the-500-years-ago-thingy" Turks are blamed and hated for it.. because most bulgarians are stupid,*****-ass,discriminative dipshits and have nothing better to do than blame EVERYTHING bad that happens (be it our fault or not) on us.So it's practicly like that "black-white" thing that happened in the U.S. but now it's in BG and it's between Bulgarians and Turks... it's awfull... but watcha gonna do. :]

Back at my university, I had applied for a transcriptionist job with a department within the deaf & disabled student union. I was tested twice for it, and both typists (who were both women, by the way) were really impressed. The head of this department, however, thought that only women should be transcriptionists, and promoted me to network specialist. So, being a man kept me from putting my 75wpm typing speed to good use and instead threw me in with what had to be the worst IT group ever (my supervisor couldn't touch-type, if that gives you an idea).

White Anglo-Irish male living in a community of people of the same race and culture. During the IRA terrorist threat i could have got a bit of stick for having Irish root's However, that was before my time and and i have never seriously been discriminated against due to my identity.

I suppose though there are a few minor cases. I went to a a Church of England school while having been raised a Catholic, this caused those who found out to be rather surprised, but i was not taunted for it and people quickly forgot about it. I remember once my ex taking the mick out of me by playfully slapping me, and then saying i couldn't hit back because i wasn't aloud to hit girls. Nothing major, only a few minor instances of ever so slight discrimination.

I thankfully dont get much racial abuse as well, white and male you know... But when I do go south of the border to England oh what fun I have, buying a bottle of coke I say thank you and a bunch of folk pick up on my accent and start heckling "Wheres your skirt?, go back to your haggis" so on so forth, not the best of insults but kind of disheartening. Then again I'm not completely surprised I've heard quite a number of horror stories from friends of family of the abuse they recieved in England, my father was refused a drink because he was Scottish and people backed away when they heard he's from Glasgow... (Glasgow part I found funny)

Then again I've heard that English folk who come north of the border also get abuse off the red necks of my country so tit for tat I guess

Well anyone who spends a good amount of time on the Escapist can imagine how much crap I get for being a Christian. Of course usually I also get crap for talking about the fact that I get crap for my faith. It's kind of an unrelenting circle of ignorant intolerance, really. Rather annoying.

Lots of neo-communists call me Hitler, but they are most likely sniffing glue, so I don't care. As a white, straight, property owning male, it's odd how I could be discriminated in any way. On paper, that is. In reality "white, straight, property owning males" are constantly blamed for everything that's wrong in the world.

Never really when I was in Germany but since I moved to the Netherlands I faced some discrimination along with pretty much everyone who can't speak dutch without an accent.

Usually its jokes about being "just visiting" (you know, like your ancestors during teh war winkwink) and similar garbage which is just annoying. But sometimes people turn away from you and rather talk to someone else (in class, at a party, in a bar) once they know you're german.

I now say that I'm norwegian, which is at least 100% true too.

I've been on the receiving end of racism, I've never been physically attacked, but I have been subjected to abuse and aggression.

I think a lot of people on the Escapist do take bigotry lightly and I would assume most of those people have never suffered it. Even just some verbal attacks can make you feel uncomfortable, unwelcome and in more extreme cases intimidated.

The most irritating case of discrimination (which could be bigotry)was people pointing out to me that I'm from the North (I live in the South) and the endless questions of "Are you Scottish?" and the one time shout of "Go back to Scotland" (Which confused me because I'd never been to Scotland in my life, so how could I go back there?)

I've also been called geek (although to me "geek" was just like saying "you are smarter than me, and I am jealous")which usually gets a response of "Thank you" from me.

Ah, Upper school was fun

I'm a Australian white male. It is impossible to be Racist/Sexist/Discriminatory to me. If anything, I'm more likely to pin the joke on you. But that's all it would be... a joke.

I tend to want to know my facts before I go and make Racist/Sexist/Discriminatory remarks about people. To most people, nothing hurts more than the truth.

not really. i don't look jewish at all so the only jew cracks i get are good natured ones from my friends. Although one time a kid apologized for refering to me as a "Jew". that was funny.

you'd definitely be a racist. you might not be considered one, though, if nobody ever notices.
