Has anyone ever considered how much we would miss toilet paper in all those apocalyptic scenarios?

Came up in a discussion with a friend and we were curious if it was one of those things that we never notice is gone, like the how people in adventure movies never have to answer "nature's call."

Assuming plant life survives the hypothetical doom scenario, I've got that covered by already knowing which flora in my region is safe and comfortable for addressing such a need.


Or failing that, find a river, jump in, and start scraping. Life ain't pretty after the apocalypse, man.

I wouldn't particularly miss it, hot baths would be more of an issue for me. Along with constantly having to hunt for food and kill other survivors (assuming that agriculture is destroyed and there is a lot of competition for limited resources).

I'm more worried about food going in than what's on the way out. But if you want to go down that road, I'm afraid Brown Trousers Time cannot even BEGIN to describe the future. Toilet paper gives you dingle berries. I'll give one cursory paper wipe to remove excess filth, but I use my hands. I get my hands a little wet and soapy and then wash my ass with them each time I poop.

If I'm in a public restroom, I'll scoop toilet water out of the bowl in my hand and use that to clean my ass real good. The trick is to flush a lot ot keep the water nice and clean. That and making sure to wash your hands real good after so you're hands don't stink.

I've put my hands in worse as busboy/dishwasher in a restaurant. You ever clean out a backed up drain with all kinds of food clogging it?

Reminds me of Discworld. One of the characters (Nanny Og, I think?) Used a book for toilet paper in one of the books, reading each page before wiping with it. There was another one (Cohen the Barbarian? It's been way too long since I've read one of these) who got pissed off at a book burning because all the books were going up in one big blaze, when each book could be used as tinder for hundreds of fires. Two interesting perspectives, and both likely to be in vogue in an apocalyptic situation.

There are a lot of things we would miss in such situations, such as actually the internet. We like that.
As for TP, that will be one of my prime scavenges. I will try and operate as a trader, and hopefully not get shot. "What are ye buying?"

Use fabric like a hanky and wash it regularly. Thats my answer also it would be one of the first things I scavange for along with meds and canned foods.
