May seem like an arbitrary question, but I was playing through a couple off hand today, courtesy of Xboxmagazine, and some of them were god awful...whereas others were genuinely enjoyable and as such actively encouraged me to buy the game in question.

Enough rambling, again I put my question to you, the masses.

I think you may be misusing arbitrary [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/arbitrary]. Sorry, but I had to say it.

And yes, I have played a few good demos- Mirror's Edge, Ratchet and Clank 2, and Left 4 Dead, for example.

The demo for Lost Planet was extremely fun when I got my 360 all those years ago. So was the Phantasy Star Universe game.

Impossible Creatures demo. Made me buy the game. Other than that, i can't recall any great demo experiences.

Probably the best example personally of a demo making me want to buy a game was Half-Life: Uplink. I got it in a copy of PC Gamer years ago, and I had seen Half-Life in the store, but I had never really given it a second thought. Thought it looked kind of boring. Then I played the demo, and instantly fell in love with it. It did so many things I had never seen done before, scripted sequences, NPC's that you could talk to, and would follow you. Fixed machine guns you could actually use. Realistic weapons, and the grunt AI was amazing. A great demo can sell a game extremely well, a crap demo can put people off completely. Just make sure if you make a great demo the game itself matches up. Other examples include the Doom shareware, and Quake, although I knew I was going to get it, just didn't have the money for the full version at the time. It's kind of annoying that companies really don't do demos any more, I've find I buy fewer games now. Especially PC, since it's usually a crap shoot if your computer is even going to be able to play the game.

Halo 1 for the PC. The demo included arguably the best single and multiplayer levels - The Silent Cartographer, and Blood Gulch.

Correct or no, I stand by my use of it in this context.

The ratchet and clank demo was a good un, and I currently play the geometry wars demo on a regular basis.

Uplink was especially awesome because it was a completely stand-alone demo. None of the stuff in there was actually in Half-Life. I recently played the GH: Metallica demo and enjoyed it, so I think I'll be picking that up soon.

The Mount and Blade demo. I think I've spent 5 hours on that thing and have yet to come to the end. To be fair, I have restarted multiple times but honestly, if I wasn't so cheap I would buy it right now instead of waiting for a sale on steam.

I played the demo for Red Faction Gurrilla earlier and I thought it was (for lack of a more imaginative word) excellent.

Honestly, go onto the website and get the key for it, it is well worth it.

I command you in the name of the great Bruce Campell to play this demo!

I had a demo for Worms World Party on a Playstation demo disc and played the absolute crap out of it. The limitations it imposed actually made it more fun, as I had played the same damn level so often I knew every trick and exploit. When I finally bought the full game, it was initially kinda underwhelming, all the extra content making my worm mayhem seem aimless.

I don't appreciate demos as much as I once did, but when they were a once a month thing, I got every bit of gameplay out of them that I could, so most demos were awesome.

The phantasy star portable demo makes you feel like you are playing a full game...
I really got addicted to it for one or two days...

Cover discs used to be awesome, a few years ago. On PC game mags at least. Full of wicked demos and stuff. Seems like developers aren't putting in the effort these days.

Probably the one that stands out in my memory would have to be Space Empires III.

The best demo was Heroes of Might and Magic 2. It was so good it wasn't worth buying the game (oops). Another great demo that you can get off Steam is called Mount and Blade. Lame name, I know, but Gamepro gave it a perfect score. It's like a small version of total war, except you get to be one of the guys. Demo takes about 30 minutes to get through, but I played it multiple times.

Download the Hitman: Silent Assassin demo. Put in the All Levels cheat.
There. Free game.

Other great demos:
Hitman: Contracts
Flight Simulator X
Sins of a Solar Empire
Guild Wars free trial
NWN 2
Thief: Deadly Shadows (Thief 3)
Crysis (I hated the game, and also hated the demo, but it gave you a good taste of the suit, the gameplay, the story, the characters and the two enemies. So it was very well done)
