Has anyone ever tried mixing an RTS with an FPS?

Yes, this was inspired by that other topic about RTS and Beat em' up. Well, it triggered my memory... I remember thinking if sombody has ever made a game where one person could control an Army/Base/All that jass, while about 2-10 others control heros and strong units FPS style, and there are 2 teams with this type of control that battle it out. *Shrug* Just a thought.
I have thought of this before. My idea was to have the AI go into an "Auto pilot" mode for when you take control of any of the units you wish and fight on the surface. In single player that is. Your idea for the multiplayer is pretty good!

Also Kingdom under fire did the beat 'em up rts bit. I liked those games.

check out MAG for the PS3. That's sorta like what you're describing
Hmm... It's not my vision, but it looks awesome. I have always wanted to play an FPS where there was enough players for it to seem like a battle. Thanks for the post.

I actually had an idea that was a lot like that awhile back, maybe 3 years now, I guess.

I was thinking up ideas to make an RTS that wasn't just an Age of Empires clone and I thought about using Heros as the only controllable units. And then I thought that you could have some people have squads and then have one commander who builds the forces and issues the commands.

That was mostly brought on by how I can never get the unit building and macro going very well when I play, but my micro is pretty decent.

I get the feeling that the main commander would only be able to set objectives and highlight units for particular squads to kill, and any of the squad leaders could be dicks and run off to do inconsequential stuff. You would really need some good communication for a game like this to work...

Or would the people have only the one hero to control and all the squads would be under the commander's control?

Either way it would probably be fun.

I think Tom Clancy's: EndWar came close. But it stil was lacking in the fps and rts. Personally I don't really see it in any category. But you took control of individual units while using resources to deploy units and capture objectives. It was 3rd person but it was more focused 'over the shoulder' view when in control of units.

It's not without it's holes. Mixing RTS and FPS would be a tedious task. I would bang my head against a wall for being an ignorant fool if sombody has done this.

Right you are, those games have done it ages ago, not a new concept.

I would love for it to be done. I know that Starcraft 2 is adding a third person action element to its map builder. Which means you can create a third person action game.

Probably the second one, but the heros can communicate with their commander via keyboard/microphone. It would be boring if the commander could only give the heros objectives, plus I'm sure the Heros wouldn't be too obediant.

You can't. they're would be too many things on screen. Immagine you and 50 allies and 50 enemies all on 1 screen> it would be chaos

Most definately Battlezone, both I and II. FPS perspective, but inclused resource-management, base building and commanding groups of units. And once you got the force you need, a base up and running with defenders, take the closest tank/scout/walker and go hunting with you fresh-out-of-the-factory squaddies.

Mag is having 256 multiplayer. The maps wouldn't be as small as the normal FPS ones are.

Zombiemaster does. The humans all play in first person, but the "zombie master" controls the zombies RTS style. There is another now dead mod who's name I cannot remmeber who did the same thing, except without the zombies.

EDIT: It was Iron Grip: The Opression.
Intresting, I'll look it up.

Yea, but there wont be 256 characters on a persons screen at 1 time. It would be battles in small skirmished of like 20 vs 20 over a huge map. Not a battle of 100 people going on all together

ZM is a HL2 Mod

But trust me on this Arma is the pretty much RTS/FPS

differnt teams, one player is commander. build stuff. other players can command troops. you will not find a finer game in that kinda style.
