The played with this idea for TF2 for a bit, way back when it was going to look realistic so about... 8 years ago. They deemed it would be too hard for it to be fun for the sort of RTS overhead commander/builder if your FPS team sucked, and vice versa. So they voted against it.
You could vote for the RTS commander, and usually the most experienced will be picked. And I'm sure that most people online playing FPS's are decent. Games are based on you and your teams skills in most FPS's and this is no diffrent, and other FPS's have worked out fine.
Or if it's really a problem just use MMO type combat with lots of Hero abilities.

Auto Aim is your friend!

Eh... Heros don't really need abilities... Maybe stats... That would put in an RPG element.

Technically an RTS is an FPS...you're viewing the first person perspective..of God.

You can't. they're would be too many things on screen. Immagine you and 50 allies and 50 enemies all on 1 screen> it would be chaos
Mag is having 256 multiplayer. The maps wouldn't be as small as the normal FPS ones are.
Yea, but there wont be 256 characters on a persons screen at 1 time. It would be battles in small skirmished of like 20 vs 20 over a huge map. Not a battle of 100 people going on all together
It doesn't have to have 100 troops on screen. Maps could be large aswell so everything isn't crammed onscreen at once.
Then it wouldn't be an FPS/RTS. RTSs have armies fighting eachother, and its based around units. So that means like 10-15 units on screen. 10-15 units can equal 40+ soldiers. An Fps would have you in shoes of one of those soldiers, which would mean you have 40+ people next with you. Not to mention the enemy AI. The screen would ba a massive clustefuck
Wouldn't be much of a use for an A.I. other than filling spots, or single-player. A lot of things are possible for new age technology. Plus it doesn't have to have graphics that rival crysis or anything.
So it wouldn't have intelligent AI or good graphics?

Yea, that'll sell well.
A.I. is a minor thing in a game that is multi-player based... Not even sure how Single player could work in this type of game. I said it doesn't need great graphics. Graphics are secondary to gameplay. A unit limit system could also keep the number of units on-screen to a minimum.

Natural Selection. HL1 mod (yes, HL1, not HL2). Space Marines vs. Aliens, but as a title that doesn't really depend on story or environment, it works fine.

One marine player goes commander and takes a top-down view of the map, the other players are the builders/soldiers. Obviously, the tech tree is very simplified compared to a full-blown RTS title.
Alien players have no single commander, but have extra UI elements to see what other allied players are doing, so they can operate with a hive mind mentality.

The mix actually worked very well, but the extremely steep learning curve really stymied its popularity and growth.

How can you make sure that players work together? I mean I doubt 25 guys would march up and down the map all together in formation

Source mod Zombie Master has one guy in an RTS setting controlling a bunch of zombies against an FPS team of dudes.

Natural Selection has that, where the marine commander can set waypoints and directions for his dudes who can choose to follow or ignore the orders. Natural Selection 2 will probably have it as well. Raven Squad also lets you control top-down, but that game has gotten pretty poor ratings.

They've made an RTS/TPS.
Rise and Fall: Civlizations at War is set in the classical age, with Greeks and Egyptians and the like. It's a traditional RTS, but you can switch between RTS mode and a third-person action mode where you control your hero. Good fun--maybe someone's already mentioned it.
Midway released it for free, you can get it here:

That would be Dungeon Keeper 2. Also free, it's abandonware.

There's a better download link somewhere, but that's the only one I could find.

You really haven't said anything about Arma, so I assume you haven't seen my other posts about it. i just think it would be sad if you missed on this one because it is EXACTLY the game you are looking for. Don't want to keep bothering you about it though.

Big shame if you missed it.

That was a concept idea for TF2 for a while but they dropped it because it was too dependant on one person for the whole team.

I hath sayeth before, and I shalt sayeth again.. YES.

Activision made a game like that, called Battlezone. It was a vehicle based FPS/RTS, where you commanded base building, and all that good stuff.

Here is a link to a wiki article about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlezone_(1998_video_game)

Look it up and download it from Gametap or something. It's an awesome game, and if I could find the CD somewhere, I'd love to play it again.
