Has anyone ever tried mixing an RTS with an FPS?

So basically battle chess. Move units around and when two meet you duke it out for ownership of the space?

Finally someone remembers Battlezone. Such a shame...

I mean, one person controls the base, manages resources, controls most of the units, builds viecles that people can get into, manages upgrades, and other RTS stuffs. (Felt like saying stuffs.) While the others control one unit FPS style, but that unit is stronger than normal and can gain ranks for better stats.
So you mean like a multiplayer game where different people affect the outcome of battle in different ways, using different control schemes in the same battle? That sounds like a very specific game.
Edit: But none that I can think of.
I've found a few that are close so far. Savage is the closest. They should do that for an FPS though, and with good devolopers, it's been done but poorly.

Yes, this was inspired by that other topic about RTS and Beat em' up. Well, it triggered my memory... I remember thinking if sombody has ever made a game where one person could control an Army/Base/All that jass, while about 2-10 others control heros and strong units FPS style, and there are 2 teams with this type of control that battle it out. Hell, could be completely multiplayer, I have no idea how single player would work well. *Shrug* Just a thought.
Savage for the PC. Two teams and each team has a commander. Each unit in the game is another person, playing a first-person view of the battlefield. The commander's orders are seen by units as beacons of light. The units can disregard commander's orders, but since the commander has a bird's eye view of the battle, one must do so at his own risk.

Urban Assault.

an old game, but you build your tanks airplanes and helicoptors which you can control from a first person view. Probably the oldest rts/fps game out there, and it worked really well (multiplayer wasn't very good however). I'm surprised I haven't found any other games like it.

There are all kinds of MMORPGFPS games out there, well, most are 3rd person games reallyy but have the RPG and MMO bits. Though currently it looks as if Valve is almost trying to gear Team Fortress 2 in a more RPGish direction, what with the random drop system and I can almost guarantee they'll start pumping out weapons with high levels and little added stats.

I think Battlezone for the PC was the first. Great fun game. Great online play. Reviewed well. Didn't sell particularly well though. The RTS part was a bit simplistic. It was more of an action game but what RTS there was added an enjoyable dimension.

When I read the title of this thread I suddenly thought of RTDs instead of RTSs, and then I had this image in my mind of someone asking for advice about mixing alcoholic beverages.

"Dude, there was this one time, we were at Dave's place, and we were like wasted, seriously. We were mixing RTS and FPS and it was like whoa! That was some crazy shit right there man, good times..."

=P Sorry, don't want to be random but the thought made me smile. Besides, I think anything I could have added on topic has actually already been said....

A highly obscure (and incredibly badass) RTS called Machines allowed you to take direct control of any of the units you built, including construction units and flying units, and enter any of the buildings that you made.

It was quite useful early-game and for your spy units. It was also quite cool to just look around inside your own buildings.

There was a reasonably obscure mod called Tremulous that did that. It's always in first person view, but you could build a fair number of things as well. Quite fun actually, it still has a good number of people playing online. Free too.
