Well I was talking with some of my friends yesterday, and we were discussing Crysis 2. I personally think it looks like a great game.

However all my friends could say is,

"It looks like MW3 what a piece of crap, they dumbed it down sooooo hard." (Yes they did dumb it down a bit, which pisses me off. Console gamers aren't tards, we are only limited by the system and controllers)

Why is it that we have to compare every title that comes out to a different game. When Alpha Protocol came out, there were droves of people yelling, "Mass Effect Clone!!!".

Can a game stand on it's own merits. I understand we have to have a point of reference, but now every game is being compared to the leader of it's genre.

EDIT: Sorry about the forever part, I meant. Has COD ruined FPS's for this generation
EDIT 2: Thought of this:

There are two responses two an FPS

1. It is too much like COD: "Wow what a clone, this sucks"
2. Not enough like COD: "Wow this game is horrible COD did (something) so much better."

i agree with you. After Activision bought the rites to Guitar Hero they've been over saturating the market, now the music genre of games is dieing because of it.

Forever? No. For the next little while? Maybe, but you needn't be so negative.

It's valid sometimes, but if you break it down enough, making these comparisons are often quite foolish. Especially with genres as broad as the FPS and the RPG.

If you want to compare hyper-realistic racing simulators, well then, yeah it might be worth comparing them.

I do agree with you, but nothing is going to stop CoD in our lifetime. Duke Nukem Forever is the only game that stands a chance, if only because its already legendary.

But yeah, the sooner CoD dies alongside all the real-life based shooters the sooner we get back to fun shooters like the early 90's.

Call of Duty did, and didn't. but not forever.
Halo 2 started the phenomenon of regenerating health. Call of duty 3, I think, Picked it up and has pretty much run with it ever since. it makes designing the game easier since you don't have to worry about making an area too hard for someone with little health, but at the same time it murders the realism CoD had previously.

also, since Modern Warfare and MW2 were so popular for their online play, they've sparked countless other titles to basically focus on multiplayer instead of giving due attention to both the campaign and multiplayer.

B-B-B-BLOODY SCREEN! /SO REAL/!

Well, nowadays, every game's a derivative of a derivative.
And I'm not as excited for Crysis 2 as I was for Crysis 1. Call me jaded.

of course not, because CoD isn't THAT good.

There is a flaw though. My brother and his friend ONLY play COD BO there must be something.

I think it's unfair that every game is being beaten down, by COD

Duke Nukem is the only COD killer out there -_-

Well COD 4 was awesome but MW2 ruined the series for me. Black ops is good but for some reason I got bored of it really quickly.

OT I'm not sure that they've ruined FPS's. Activision is just trying to milk the genre like they did with Guitar heroes(I personally love Rock Band games and I hate the fact it seems that Harmonix is suffering because of Activisions actions too). I personally like Battlefield, Halo and Gears of War and they have kept my hopes up so far. Now I just can't wait for Bulletstorm and Duke Nukem: Forever.

I hate those people, and I love Alpha Protocol.

OT: Hopefully, with games like Brink, Bulletstorm, and DNF coming out, the repetition of COD will lessen, if not end.

For a long time people were complaining about the same thing with Counter Strike. That most shooters could be compared to Counter Strike. Those days have gone because we've gotten new games.

To say that CoD has ruined the fps genre forever is absurd.

The difference between Mass Effect and Alpha Protocol is that Alpha Protocol's story actually shapes itself based on your actions. While Mass Effect simply says it does that, but it really doesn't.

As for your whole "call of duty ruining FPS's" thing, I say no. Thats more to blame with Publishers looking at COD's success, then telling to developers to "make it like Call of Duty".

You know, like what they did with Crysis 2. They give the multiplayer to Crytek UK, formerly Free Radical, developers of Timesplitters, and tell them to make it like Call of Duty. Massive waste of talent that is.

I like Call of Duty, I think its fun. But for fuck's sake, can we please stop trying to copy it?

Yeah! i agree, lets treat Duke Nukem like the new messiah! Duke is the only man that can bring back the fun in fps. Lets cut off Call of Duty's neck and Sh*t down its throat! Hail to the king bayby. (Also the man that i speak of posesses testicles made out of alloy that consists iron and carbon STEEL!)

I wouldn't go as far to say that, I just try to avoid it. I'd much rather play Resistance, my all time favorite FPS series.

COD isnt great, IMO its quite boring after a while. However I had BFBC2 before I got Blops (my first and last COD game) so it didnt ruin my fps experience. Just showed me how many people play such a boring bland game (IMO IMO IMO)
Hell I even prefer Farcry 2 to Blops. And its not making me think that all future FPSs will be crap, apart from inevitable future CODs.
Brink, Crysis 2, Bulletstorm, RAGE, Homefront all look great (IMO IMO IMO) and anyone who plays COD, thinks its crap and therefore thinks all FPSs are crap need to wake up and smell the [del]Battlefield[/del].... roses.

Lol,Duke Nukem topping COD? not possible and not in this lifetime. And I'm not hating on Duke cause I grew up on that game too but at the moment the COD series is like a billion dollar gorilla, GORILLION! Unless Duke Nukem brings something completely fresh and innovative to the FPS genre, it'll be a whiles before the COD Gorillion goes down.

It's not that a specific game can ruin an entire genre, it's just that lazy developers feel that they can cash in on a fad by copying what they think is popular, instead of taking the time to create something interesting and original. You really shouldn't blame call of duty for being successful, you should blame lazy developers who just try to feed on another franchise's success.

Basically, the only thing that can ruin a genre is stagnation, and the only reason that stagnation exists is because it's easier for a game developer to copy and existing game and make a couple of tweaks than it is for them to make up their own completely original game. You shouldn't blame call of duty for making developers wanting their games to make the same kind of money, you need to blame the developers for not realizing that you can't beat something by being exactly like it.

I know it's easy to just pick on call of duty because it's what's popular and that it's completely unapologetic about making money hand over fist and still selling out to make more money, but the real target of your ire that the market is flooded with COD clones shouldn't be COD but rather the developers making the clones.

This really all balances out though, to be honest. I mean, clones of COD never actually make nearly as much money as COD itself does, so in a few years this trend will exhaust itself and move on to something else. I mean, that's the way it happened with Halo, and with CS before that. Soon there will be a new game that becomes incredibly popular, and then people will ***** about how games are moving away from the good old days of call of duty and halo, and how they miss recharging shields and health.
