They've changed the curriculum for primary schools (dunno about high schools) over here in New Zealand to tie in with the Rugby World cup. They've also changed the timing of the holidays to fit in with the finals. Well done, board of Education, now even kids who hate the sport get it shoved down their throats. Thank Christ I finished high school years ago.

Wow, I hadn't even heard about that. I'm so sick of our national psyche's obsession with rugby. One day people will have to wake up to the fact that we're not the best in the world by default any more, and then maybe we can have a little more balance and a little less glorification over a bunch of meatheads slamming in to each other in pursuit of a small, air-filled oval ball.

Well the my school never did anything but the whole SA education department did. They changed the SACE program (year 12 completion certificate) so that rather than students doing 5 subjects they do 4 and a completely useless 'research project'. They also have to do certain subjects now in order to get an ATAR (it's a score that gets you into university courses) rather than just having to complete everything. I was lucky and finished the year before they changed everything.

Research project was such a waste of time... At least I have more frees! One lesson Thursday mornings

Holy fuck, some people are just so damn stupid. How are these people let into positions of power? How?

When I was at Highschool I didn't give a fuck about rules. I texted in class in plain view, I ate whatever I liked whenever I wanted. I wore a jacket if I wanted to. I went to the bathroom when I wanted to, and fuck asking the teacher. If I didn't want to do a class I skipped it and did something else more important.

You know why I did these things? Because they are BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS OR BASIC COMMON SENSE. I was a mature enough person to know my rights and what were my priveleges.

School is a place you come to to learn, not be oppressed and downtrodden.

I got into a fight as the defending party, fucked the guy up and explained in VERY clear terms why I was not going to the detention they gave me. I never heard anything about it after that.

Sigh, people need to learn that it's not good to just conform to bullshit.

Same with college. I have a ***** of an English teacher who tries to control our class of 17-18 year olds like we are 12.


Example 1: I had my headphones in as we were doing free writing, because it helps the whole creative process. She told me to take them out, and I said 'No thankyou, it helps me work better.'
She didn't say anything about it after that.

Example 2: I went to the bathroom and on the way back spotted a girl I like, so we stopped to chat for a little while in the hallway. English teacher sees me on the way to her office and literally goes off at me right then and there, telling me what i can and cannot do during 'her class time'. I told her that I was old enough to be able to handle my own time (I was getting A's and B's in that class anyway) and that she was being extremely rude.
Again, she leaves with nothing more to say.

My highschool changed half-day Fridays to full day because apparently, all the students were skipping instead of going. Here's an idea! How about they punish the skippers instead of the students who actually don't skip?

And now, if your late twice, you get an instant in-school suspension. Late 3 times, out-of-school suspension. Late 5 times, you get expelled for 1 semester. Apparently, it's my fault if my bus is running 15 minutes late, there's construction happening on the bus route or that there is a traffic jam.

And finally, we're only allowed to use cellphones for research. The staff let us make the cellphone rule and it clearly says, "Students are able to use their cellphones during spare blocks for texting or any other use, so long as they don't abuse their right. They are not permitted to use them during class and can only phone someone while they are off a learning floor (where we do our work) or during lunch. The ringer must be off at all times." Now, if you pull out your cellphone to check the time, it gets confiscated and you need a parent to pick it up.

My high school actually ran a sting operation. I shit you not.

There was this kid with major emotional issues that had gotten in trouble for smashing up a classroom. The teachers actually bought his loyalty with the promise that they wouldn't punish, charge or expel him if he attempted to buy weed from the older guys who hung round the back of the school while wearing a recording device. The little gobshite actually played ball. 4 guys got expelled. Afterwards they tried to get revenge by buying a domain and setting up a version of the school's website where they'd slag off everything about the establishment even though the idiots had, ya know, been selling pot in school...derp! Anyway, school got pissed and actually tried to take them to court to bring the site down. Made the local papers.

Several:

- Got rid of coffee for the senior students because... well... I dont know why. Basically, if you were a senior you could go to the canteen in the morning and get a free cup of coffee. Handy for those who pulled all nighters for assignments. I miss it.

- The year 12ths used to have a prank day, on the same day as they graduated. Well, Im in Year 12 at the moment and this year they brought in a new thing. No more prank day. It sucks because it was basically a rite of passage, leaving school forever with a bang. Everyone is pissed off, even me. I was looking forward to putting double sided tape on all the door handles...

- Having a piss weak year level assembly every monday. Every. Fucking. Monday. It's pointless because nothing really important happens at all during the week, we dont need it.

- The school has a very strict uniform policy, but it seems to only apply to me. I always get shit from teachers about not wearing a belt. Im not retarded, I buy clothes that fit me, I dont need a damn belt. This also ties into a thing they implemented this year only. In the past, if you didnt have a uniform item, you could get a pink slip, which basically exemped you from getting in trouble for not having it. Now, you get a yellow detention slip, so you have to go pick up rubbish for not bringing an item, regardless of your reason. So now everyone just doesnt ask for a pink slip. Idiots.

- Oh and all the teachers have a grudge against me. Mainly because I have had difficult years throughout my schooling (Lots of family and personal issues) and they seem to take it personally. It really sucks. Oh well, my school years end in November, just in time for Skyrim. CHYEAH!

I went to a fucking grammar school:

1) I HAD TO CUT MY FUCKING HAIR BECAUSE I'M MALE

2) No jewellery - guys can't get any piercings, girls are allowed ear piercings

3) Girls aren't allowed to have hair too short (crew cuts, but not shaven)

4) Detentions for: shirts untucked, ties undone, not wearing a blazer in public

5) Me and my girlfriend at the time got told to "be more appropriate" because we were leaning on each other.

Basically saying "you are worthless as an individual, you have to represent the school". Squashing the ability of teenagers to explore their own identity. You weren't allowed to be yourself, you had to be part of the school.

Oddly enough though these days, I actually see more high school kids at lunchtime heading to the chippy/carry out for their lunch. Not surprising, due to the rabbit food being offered back in the canteen...

The same fucking thing happens at the school I go to now. There's a cafe across the road which has cheap chips and coffees where everyone goes to, because the canteen can't even offer any decent food for decent prices. $5 feeds one person at the canteen; feeds 6 people across the road.

Basically, schools are just disciplinary institutions. They take too much responsibility for their students and they don't allow their students any real freedom. The education system is broken and poorly designed anyway, so it doesn't do much good for students or anyone.

Our school just rearranged the timetables, removed tutorials and free periods entirely, and removed our "Study day", meaning that students who do Technical Theatre (eg. me) or interschool sports now have to do them outside of school hours. They're not even waiting for this year's group of seniors to go through, just chopping up the timetable randomly.

Also:

1. Our principal addresses us like a kindergarten class. ("Good morning Miss X...")

2. No tolerance of electronic devices: You get seen with earphones/iPod/phone you lose it until the end of term. Luckily, the teachers are more forgiving.

3. Sports Carnivals are mandatory for non-seniors. If you sit on the stands, you get yelled at for being inactive. If you stand up and go out onto the grass, you get yelled at for being out in the sun and your hat isn't up to standard (even if its the school hat they sell to you). If you're in the (empty) stands throwing a ball around, you get yelled at for endangering your schoolmates even if the ball's made of cotton-wool wrapped in cloth. If you go to a shaded bit of grass to sit/throw around a ball, you get yelled at for going out of bounds. If you go to the perfectly in-bounds and unused part of the field that's in shade, you're out of bounds even if you got told to go over there by the same teacher in the first place. You can't charge electronic devices in the (numerous) powerpoints, if you use electronic devices you should be out in the sun and if you're using an electronic device in the sun you're trying to give yourself cancer.

If (god help you) you sign up for an event, everyone gets pissed off since you just took up a position that could have been taken by another, better person.

tl;dr: You can't do anything.

My primary school also had a large undercover concrete shelter where you were supposed to sit and eat lunch. You were supposed to leave your bags on the bag racks on the deck near the classrooms, take your food to the undercover area and eat it, before returning to your bag to put your lunchbox away and grab your hat.

Problem: You weren't allowed to go on the deck at lunch after the first 5 minutes. And this was enforced by insane Nazi-inspired teachers with a fanatical hatred of the sound of children's footsteps. So you couldn't go back to get your hat or return your lunchbox if you took more than 5 minutes to eat your food.

Bigger problem: Not having a hat was punishable by confinement to the undercover area. Staying in the undercover area was punishable by detention. If you could convince the teacher that you didn't have a hat and had to stay undercover, they made you follow them around basically like a shadow. Any of your friends attempting to interact with you or approach you in any way would be chased away with accusations of antisocial behaviour and lazyness and threats of detention.

tl;dr: You can't do anything if you don't eat all your lunch within 5 min.

Ha. Yeah, I'm just going to describe my experience attempting to access my university's free wifi this morning.

1. Open Firefox (Don't start, it's fine when I'm at my house. It's only shitty when I'm on campus.)
2. Nothing fucking happens.
3. Check airport.
4. Connection is fine.
5. Check network settings
6. "Internet...Failed". This is the error message I get. The connection to the wifi network is fine, but unfortunately the internet no longer exists. Note: Not that particular wifi network, THE INTERNET ITSELF NO LONGER EXISTS.
7. Plug in ethernet cord.
8. Sign in to the network.
9. Install the thing that lets the authorities keep track of what I'm doing....For the 5th time.
10. Sign in again.
11. Get repeatedly redirected back to a page that says "Congratulations! You have successfully joined the network!" or whatever every time I try to, you know, get to a fucking site that I WANT to go to. This goes on for about 20 seconds.
12. FINALLY do whatever the fuck I wanted to do in the first place, which I've probably forgotten by this point.

Oh, also, they blew up a dorm and now it's a giant construction site directly between me and the dining hall. Adds about 5 minutes of walking to every meal. That doesn't SOUND like a lot, but if you go outside, pick a direction, and walk for five minutes, you'll see. It adds up.

And the dining hall sucks. My friends and I have a theory that there's a massive, naturally occurring underground lake of grease underneath the place, and the cooks are all floating around in gondolas down there, dipping all the food in it. If anyone falls in, they are immediately shot before they can mutate. There are also colonies of mutants on the outer fringes of the Grease Lake.

Ugh, I know right? Sure, every nation has its pet sport, but when it gets to the point where it obscures EVERYTHING else you know it's time to be worried.
I work for a library and we're supposed to be promoting the world cup, comic book month, a heritage festival and some poetry thing. Guess which one's taking up all our time and resources?

since art, literature, and free thought are all apparently evil and of the devil, my principal/vice principal had been pulling a bunch of dick moves the end of last year.

First, they refused to allow the shamans to come talk at World Religions class (simply because some christian fundamentalist called the school and complained), and are now policing the class and will only let the teacher teach what the principal wants taught (probably to make sure nothing non-christian is spoken about)

Second, tho they failed in their attempt to cut the class entirely, they still severely bastardized the student-run school paper, (the teacher thinks its because they're afraid of the freedom of speech that could be used to talk bad about school policies etc)

and third, they cut the Film/TV Appreciation class from 1 semester to 1 quarter. This class may sound like a joke class(which was what i thought before I took it), but its not. It is one of the best classes I've ever taken, and I learned more from that class than most other classes I've ever taken. In the class we studied film, talked a lot about many film-making and storywriting techniques, studied some of the best films in history, and even wrote our own movie script using what we learned. I learn so much from that class, even beyond just film and writing. Even with a full semester, there was still a TON of stuff we weren't able to get to to learn about. with only 1 quarter, idk how the hell they are going to get through much of the curriculum in such a short time. God I'm glad I took the class before this, and thank god I graduated.

You know what, I think I'm gonna go egg my old principal's+vice principal's houses..

Mine did. Twice.

1) Changed the already awful cafeteria system so kids can only get school food (we used to be able to swing by Tesco in the morning to get something worth eating rather than sawdust sandwiches)
2)Timetable changes. Now, kiddies only have one hour of free time in the entire day, which goes from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and they have less options for their GCSEs, with (I think) 6 of them being removed. This affects the teachers, too - their pay gets frozen for I don't know how long (I'm not even sure they know).

What about yours? Did you ever want to set the board of governors on fire?
EDIT: The one hour is made of 20 minutes break and 40 minutes lunch.

I had both of those, but to a lesser extent. This year, the bad food has been replaced by a new caterer (Not tried them yet, but the leaflet used the word 'healthy' every other fucking sentence so it can't be good) and made us use some shitty bank thing we stick our money on instead of change. As for the second, instead of 5 60 minutes lessons p/day and 1 60 minute lesson after school (for our chemistry lesson in triple science) on Wednesday we have 6 50 minutes lessons and no after school lesson. Safe to say I have more than 5 lessons I'm doing for my GCSEs, so for some lessons (like the pointless PE we get nothing for) we get 40 or more extra minutes but for a lot we lose half an hour. Can you see why this is stupid? Not only is it bad for people who didn't take long-course science (triple science) because they now have more science lessons, the people who DID take long-course have it worse too because we still get 6 lessons of it a week it's just that all of them are squished into 50 minutes instead of having 60 minute ones and having the last one after school.
It's really fucking ridiculous.

Also, as for removing some lunch time, most of our lessons go way into lunch and they seem to be actively trying to ring the bell as early as they can. It SHOULD be that lunch is between 1:15 and 2:00, but these days it's more like 1:20 and 1:45-50. Not many people keep track of the time, so it fucking works.

Well, let's see...

Our music teacher was almost at retirement age, but she was promised her job. She was planning to just cut back a little on what she was doing, but continue doing the A2 course I'm on this year.

The collage went and advertised her job behind her back, after promising her that she would keep it. They forced us to go through 4 possible teachers - all of whom had never taken an A2 course before - on the last music lesson of the year. We all said they were not up to standard. The old teacher's been replaced anyway.

I had half a mind to just quit the music course outright from the shear princible. I mean, seriously, to just advertise someone's job as free even as they're doing it and you promised them they would keep it is just a dick move. And more over, they wanted her to judge the teachers that might well have replaced her. Unbiasly, of course. Because, you know, THAT'S possible when the people you're judging might replace you...

My High School did two annoying things-

1. During lunch time we are allow to head to the two nearby convient stores and a chip shop to get our lunch. However due to a increase litter problem they had ban all years except for sixth formers from going there. I however was starting my sixth form year when they created the ban so it didn't affect me that much (I just felt sorry for those couldn't go there during lunch).
Before you ask, no the stores didn't close down due to lost of sales as when school time was over it had got very busy from the kid heading there after school.
2. As a Sixth former we all got different lessons at different time so we got some breaks period. This is great as we can just chill out (listen to music and read my games magazines). The sixth former head techer took notice of this and ban us from relaxing during break as it make us lazy. They decided to force us to be proactive during out breaks so we were force to do our homeworks or school related activity. Ok sure I had use this time to do extra work in my D&T and Art lessons but I have my chill out time anytime anywhere.

EDIT-I just remember we used to had game Quake install in the pc until they decided to remove it (this was during my bro time at high school so I never got to play it). They did this again when every computer were install with this game fill with hundred of mini games which were fun to play in the Library during lunch time.
