Not sure if this is on topic, since it's not the school itself pulling a dick move, but I refuse to miss an opportunity to vent (and it is tangentially related to education).
After spending 2 years studying engineering at University, I realised that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life doing something I didn't enjoy and wasn't particularly good at. I decided to switch course, it was a pretty major change, especially as I went from studying Engineering to studying Film & Television, something I do have a great deal of passion for, as opposed to something I thought would be a steady reliable source of income.
I'm not sure how it works in other countries, but in the UK, if you cannot afford to pay your tuition fees, you can apply for a loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC), a company run by the government to ensure that anyone with the academic ability can afford to go to university (this is a massive over-simplification, but I have no desire to go into the details about quangos and the like). These loans are only paid back once you actually start earning money (again, it's a bit more complex than this, but I can't be bothered to explain, if you're interested look it up).
I had received this loan for the two years of my engineering course, and applied again when I switched course, letting them know my circumstances and that I was switching course. If this had been refused, I would not have continued my studies, simply because I couldn't have afforded to. This was not the case, they said they would pay my tuition fees for my new course. This was all over a year ago.
Roll on this summer, and a while after the year's lectures and exams had all finished, I noticed something odd; all my friends on my new course had their results, but I wasn't getting mine. At this point I thought I had nothing major to worry about, bureaucratic snafus happen, and I wasn't going to hold it against the University. I simply waited some more, then eventually called up my university and asked if they could resend my results. They said no, since apparently they hadn't received my tuition fees for the academic year.
This was the point that alarm bells started ringing, but I tried to be optimistic and rang the Student Loans Company to find out what had happened. This was the answer I got; my tuition fees had not been paid since my course change meant that I didn't qualify for a loan.
What?
My status had not changed since my application had been accepted, so I asked why I had been told I would receive the loan. In the four weeks since I first asked this question I still have not been given an answer.
What makes this even more annoying is that the SLC made no attempt to inform me of the change in my status, and I may not have found out until much later if not for the University withholding my results. The thing that propels this onto the level of farce (and makes me suspect deliberate dickishness on someone's part) is that the cancellation of my loan apparently occurred on the 3rd of July. My birthday. Happy fucking birthday.
Here's where it gets really stupid; they are now refusing to even acknowledge that they aren't paying me anything anymore. You might not thing that this is a problem, but if so you clearly have no experience of dealing with governmental bureaucracy, and I envy you. The Job Centre is refusing to let me apply of Job Seekers Allowance without proof that I am no longer receiving any money from the SLC. I asked how they would advise obtaining this proof; they said ask the SLC to send me a letter stating it. So I did. In response, the SLC told me to ask the Job Centre to send the SLC a letter telling the SLC that the SLC were not giving me any money.
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
tl;dr - I now have a debt of over £3000 (around US$5000), which I have no means of paying, and the government-run company that landed me with this debt is preventing me from getting any money from the government while I desperately search for a job.
Moral of the Story: You think schools pull some dick moves? Try dealing with a quango.
