Has the ending of a story ever been rewritten due to a negative fan reaction?

there was "Broken steel" for fallout 3...I guess thats one good thing about DLC...if the ending is so horrible it can be "fixed"

Fallout 3, maybe?

Didn't they add DLC that changed the ending?

Broken Steel did change the Fallout 3 ending so that the player character wasn't dead, yes.

But, I don't think they did it because the players didn't like the ending.

Seems far more likely that they just did it because it was easier than having you play a new person for the DLC.

Fallout 3.

Okay, maybe it wasn't necessarily "rewritten", but after much criticism, Bethesda released Broken Steel which completely overhauled the ending to the vanilla game.

The only one well similar example I can think of is this the film called Deep Blue Sea (it's abit like Jaws but with a smarter shark).

Anyway during the test screening, everyone was booing at the last sceen and demanding the main female lead to died already (since it was her fault for the cause of it all.
They change the ending so instead of the original ending with the black character sacrifice himself, she scarifice herself instead so that guy stay alive.

upset so many people they had to retcon it. Closest I can think of.

The only other changes like that would be re-released Star Wars and stuff, in which they changed it solely to provoke negative reactions from fans.
They retcon that episode? When? And what changes did they make to it? I mean I was saddened by this episode but I didn't want the creators to change it.

Google the Clone Saga in Spider-Man.

And no, I don't like it. I've seen fanfic writers ruin things in some half assed entitlement mindset about how the story needed to end they way they liked, but at least I can ignore that. Show respect for the artist and that not every game, show, movie, needs to end the qy you want.

ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL! It was all indoctrination, its all a huge publicity stunt and the REAL ending is coming down the line. (Massive fan denial.)

Because it's always professional to take a job for money and then treat it like a joke. This guy isn't a writer, shit he is just a tool. He had the privilege to be a writer by trade, for that to be his career and instead of embracing that amazing opportunity he took a giant dump on it.

I hope he ends up working a min wage job, that's the kind of job you don't give a shit about.
Honestly, it looks like he is "embracing that amazing opportunity" and has been writing sci-fi since the mid 80s.

Here's the thing, and I say this as a fan of the series, but Mass Effect is (from a professional stand point) bad writing. Further as I understand it, no one is bashing Deception for being badly written, just poorly researched. So, when I'm saying, "not giving a shit", it's not like he didn't do a decent job, it's just that he didn't feel the need to venture beyond the background material he was given, apparently. And no, Mass Effect isn't worth the effort, no matter how much you may like it.

The whole concept of Highlander 2 was re-written because it was stupid as hell and fans HATED it, and the re-writes are still crap. But at least they tried.
As I recall, Highlander 2 ended up the mess it was because the insurance company stepped in and hijacked the production in the first place. Or something...

The ending of King Lear was altered because it was thought to be too much for contemporary audiences of the day. The happy ending version was performed for well over a hundred years afterward because people couldn't face the message of the original.

True artists don't consider fans in the creation of their work. Does this mean video games are not art?

In Bender's Big Score, a version of Fry came back from the future so Seymour didn't heartbreaking wait for him. Seymour got flash-fossilzed by the explosion from Bender's assasination attempt.

I think that comics do this sort of thing all the time. Didn't they write out a few decades of Spiderman canon in a deal with the devil scene and then write it all back in later?

Acording to MovieBob, fan reaction was very influential during the Green Lantern Paralax saga thingy. It didnt change a finale because the continuity keep going as always in the comic book industry to even have a finale of all finales but if the series like ME keep having sequels then it is possible that a retcon may happen

Is anyone blackmailing the creators or threatening them at gunpoint to change the ending of Mass Effect 3? No? Then why the hell does it matter?

People are pissed by the crappy writing in ME3, and whether or not they are justified is irrelevent. The creators made something that the masses consider to be shit, and so they have a choice to make, and whatever choice they make will be completely of their own volition. So they let them decide and stop spamming the front page of this forum with ME3 threads.

"Broken steel" for fallout 3 wasnt so much a new ending, just allowed you to come back to life from your radiation overdose so you could keep playing after you completed the game. Kind of made your sacrifice pointless. But it was still annoying as you may not have saved before starting that mission and thus had to start the game from scratch.

The movie I Am Legend.....fans hated the original ending from the book and they re filmed a new dumb ending that went against what the whole book was about.

I personally dont think you should change something to placate annoyed fans. Unless it went against cannon then it should stay as it is. Its the game, book, film they wanted to make. I find it funny people were so vocal with Sopa ending internet freedom, now these same people are moan and trying to get Bioware to change there game ending.

Never heard of it happening. But if you're interested in the writer fan relationship, what happened to Sherlock Holmes comes kind of close. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle originally planned to kill Holmes off so he could work on other projects. However fans were apparently upset by this so after having written and published what he intended to be the death of Holmes he decided Holmes had survived and continued to write. And looking at Wikipedia it was a gap of about 10 years. 8 to The Hound of the Baskervilles which was supposed to be prior to his 'death', and 2 more years after that before he just gave in and decided that Holmes was still alive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes#The_Great_Hiatus
Of course, the exact reasons Holmes was brought back were unclear, and it might well have been more fiscal than fan-oriented. I just brought this up in another thread a couple hours ago, so it's kinda fresh in my mind.

Well, I know it happens in movies in post production all the time. Someone above mentioned I am Legend. And he's right. Remember the ending? Will Smith saves the woman and girl, gives them the cure, and kills himself and the attacking horde. In the original ending, it is revealed that the "horde" was just out to save the one he had capture. And in fact, he was their boogie-man and walking nightmare.
One should also mention that "they" are mutants and monsters. And he's the last human being. He's more of an anti-hero tbh :3
Hold on, if Will Smith is the last human (or at the least, one of the last), then he's the monster. I mean think of it this way: A sentient society is living on it's own while a cruel demon, the last of his race, murders every person he finds and kidnaps people as well. Because for the Vampires, Will Smith was the Demon and the Monster while they were just living on their own
