Has the heat died down? Is it OK to openly like Undertale again?

Please I've seen more hate from the fans of the game than any haters.

"Why aren't you playing it this way", "Hey hurry up with this animation for the game you're doing","All the bad times", "Ooooooooooh yesssss(Poses)".

Game itself is fine but I find the fans worse than the haters. Also a good proton probably came from it winning the GameFAQs game of the year vote. Now that was an uproar

I think so.

Everything has pretty much died down, I'd say you can like Undertale without too much backlash now.

Personally, I love the game, and I remember when that wasn't right by some. Funny thing, and maybe I just walked around with my eyes closed but all of the people saying the fanbase was terrible or it's an SJW game or this or that, I never saw any examples of that. Like I said, maybe I was just blind but it's not like it matters now.

Heh, I saw some people bring up the GameFaq Best Game Of All Time meltdown, I saw a funny video on that.

To the people asking about that hate, I suggest you look at Did You Know Gaming Undertale. When I first looked at it, the comments were flooded with people calling it 'sjw trash' and other such things to the point where I didn't bother typing a comment so yeah there was a very vocal backlash against it bout everywhere I go even on a brony site that I was on

When an un-ignorable fad that doesn't appeal to you bleeds over into your personal interest circles, it's perfectly reasonable to get irritated until it recedes. Insulting or calling for repercussions on the fad's participants is just petulant whining, though.

And yeah, now that Undertale fans aren't forcing it into every conversation, I don't expect anyone will be so reactionary to your admission of liking it.

Trust me, my occasional choice of profile images alone has caused these confrontations a year ago, and I'm not even that fond of FNaF.

...what I've learned from this is that apparently people think 'sjw game' is an appropriate label/criticism of something. That's just disappointing.

Anyway, I think the bigger problem was people not liking that people liked it. Or that people not liking the game felt uncomfortable saying they didn't like it. And all the problems from both of those were people bringing up their like/dislike of the game/it's fans in threads that had nothing to do with the game/it's fans.

Personally, I never put much stock in internet dramas. Openly like or don't like whatever game you please. Just... do it in the right threads, yeah?

I was mostly vexed because the things that everyone seemed to love about the game, I hated.

Didn't like the music or the art style, the characters annoyed me, and the fact that the game plays me almost as much as I play it was...disconcerting. It certainly wasn't bad, but I still struggle to grasp why everyone loves this game so much.

And the endless gushing, both here and in real life, got old really quick.

Not really. Some people don't like it and you know how pissy people are when you don't agree with them on something.

What the fuck? Doesn't everyone like it? Aren't there like 60k+ positive reviews on Steam and a permanent #1 spot on Metacritic?

I genuinely enjoyed that little game. Not sure where the backlash against liking is coming from. It had more than enough love to go around.
But lord help you if you ever said anything BAD about the game.
I was in the worst parts of the fandom too. I'm pretty settled in at tumblr and it was fucking horrible.

What was a cute game with a very blank slate character (and no Frisk wasn't labeled as non binary. That was never confirmed nor denied. It was simply a they/them character so you can perceive it as whatever you wanted it to be.) ended up becoming a hostile field of 'Friendly Reminders', Gender politics, hate male, anti-nsfw crusades, bullying, and people getting waaaaaay too fucking invested in the characters.

I was there when a lot of artists left because they were being accused of certain phobics and the like. (Don't get me started on the 'Down with Cis' nonsense.)

So for all intents and purposes there was a time where I low key hated the game I loved because the fanbase was so shitty. Especially when the most vocal parts gave it the 'SJW' game namesake. They were some nasty fucking people.
Now that things have calmed down I'm ready to get involved in the fandom again

I didn't like it. I didn't finish it. Played maybe...2 hours, was incredibly bored with it, haven't loaded it up since.

Was it ever really that bad? The only thing I noticed was that people were astounded that many were proclaiming it as the greatest game of all time. Then again, the only real conversation I paid any attention to about the game was on this site, so the usual passive aggressive attitudes were the only ones I saw.

I never bothered finishing the game because I had so much of it spoiled. Once all the story stuff is spoiled, there's not much there. Sure the way the bullet hell interacts with various bosses is cool, but for me, that really gets bogged down by the random encounter system. Playing the same levels of a simplistic bullet hell over and over is just not enjoyable for me. It sucks because I feel like I'm missing out on something amazing, but I just can't bring myself to get through it. Maybe it's just not for me.

I will say though, the soundtrack is pretty phenomenal.

It's mainly because tumblr got their fangs into it and tumblr is known for housing SJWs or whatever they'll be called in a days time.

I'm just suprised tumblr hasn't ruined it like they ruined Steven Universe for a lot of people.

I just started playing it so I can't judge the game itself.

I was surprised the Nintendo fans in particular were so hostile to Undertale. You'd think they appreciate the successor to the Mother games they keep (rightfully) pestering Nintendo into actually releasing properly.
That's easy: it wasn't made by Nintendo.

@ that last sentence: Heh, heh. Godspeed buddy. FNaF's got it pretty damn rough.

Since you brought it up though, I guess I might as well address that for a long time I've found it disappointing that that feeling is considered natural.

I made it through the Skyrim craze for that year without really caring, just thinking "Oh, that's neat. Looks like they're havin' fun."
Same with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Same with Portal (or any Valve game in the 00s)
Same with Dark Souls
Same with MLP before I got into it late.
Same with Kendrick Lamar (that's... more of an inner-hiphop thing, but trust me for a while you couldn't would 2 steps without his name being thrown into a rapcentric conversation)

Which is not to say that I haven't run into my fair share of annoying people or smug superiority from those that enjoyed these things ('specially Souls and Jojo's), but I mostly chalked that up to the people being jackasses, and not really representing the subject matter or the fanbase as a whole. Then again... like you, yeah I've been on the receiving end of some pretty harsh words due to liking some less-than-favored entertainment, so maybe that might have effected my outlook.

It took me a while to finally pick up and play Undertale. My usual gaming group talked about it for a long time, with lots of memes and comments relating to the game, to the point I was totally lost by one of my friend's Worms Armaggedon team being all Temmie, aside from Bob.

It kinda became one of those games I actively didn't play simply because so many others talked about it. I was so exposed to the game through other people that it seemed pointless me playing it.

I grabbed it recently after it came up in conversation, and I was astonished, confused and excited within minutes of the game's total messing with me and my approach. From a simple sign telling me to stay on the path, to the late game bombshells that totally screwed with my head, I was hooked enough throughout to do a second runthrough immediately after beating it the first time.

The whole anti-"SJW" backlash to Undertale isn't really surprising. In fact I'm surprised it didn't get as bad as Gone Home, a game that you can't even mention without someone insisting that the only reason anyone liked it was because the theme of a single subplot (you only like it cuz lesbians omg).

You think you got a lot of hate and backlash for openly liking Undertale?

Psh! Try being a fan of Half-Life, Halo, or Call of Duty on this forum. Holy fuck, the amount of condescension and mockery I've received over the years from other posters, just because I happened to like the listed series, makes whatever 'hate' the Undertale fans have received pale in comparison. I can't recall if it was here or elsewhere but I remember someone once calling me a "cancerous philistine" who "epitomizes the dudebro mentality and everything wrong with the game industry", simply because I had the gall...the downright audacity...to say I actually enjoyed playing Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Just like whatever you like. If someone else decides to mock you for it, just shrug it off, call them an ass, and move on. Those sorts of people really aren't worth your time or concern. Let them stew in their own misery and bile.

And yes, at the risk of facing mod wrath, I would do the same for anyone who behaves that way on this forum. Those sorts of people can fuck right off.

Okay honestly, people who say they didn't like or were annoyed by Undertale's combat mechanics: go play Asteroids. If you hate Asteroids, I can understand why you might dislike Undertale's bullet "hell". Also though in that case you must an idiot.
This mentality doesn't help either. Mocking someone for not liking Undertale is just as bad as mocking someone for liking it. It's needlessly condescending and rude.

It helps no one, and worse it paints a very poor image of the game and its associated fan base.

I look forward to the day when the internet collectively loses its hate boner for Tumblr. People disliking something because someone else likes it is a textbook example of being a child.

There was a backlash against Undertale? First I heard of it, but I *have* been away from this place for a while.

So, let's try. I like Undertale. I just never finished Undertale, because Undyne got on my nerves and then I got distracted. I should probably finish it, at some point. But I like what I played of it.
Well not just here. All over the gaming focused places on the internet really.

What I found most funny about it was the people falling back on the arguments they would use for other games that don't even really apply to Undertale. Like "it's not really a game", or "it's just a game snooty indie type play to make them selves think their better than everyone else". The kind of things some people like to level at games like Dear Ester.
I've seriously had someone on this very site tell me that the only reason I liked something was because I thought I was better then everyone else. He said this had to be the case, because there was no way anyone could possibly enjoy the thing I enjoyed, and we must be lying. When I tried to explain why I actually enjoyed the thing, he basically said there was a conspiracy of people who pretended like they enjoyed this thing, but who really hated it, just like him.

What was this thing? All of classical literature!

Asteroids is fun... for about 10 minutes. Then, for me, it gets kinda old. I think the more unique fights in Undertale are interesting, but the random encounters kill it for me.

Although, I think you've single-handedly solved why the fanbase of this game apparently got a lot of backlash. "You don't like the thing I like so you're an idiot." Yep, that'd do it.
