has the PS2 become nothing but history?

Of course it has. Once the next generation is out the previous ones tend to get left in the dust. However, considering how long PS2 games kept coming even after the 360/PS3/Wii were out I'd say it's perhaps the best system thus far. Sure, graphics aren't as amazing as modern games, but that's less of an issue for me than just having frikkin' awesome games to play. PS2 is my nick-name for my son.

This is what happens in business and video games in general, you didn't think they'd make PS2 stuff forever did you? There's no shortage of games around for it to buy...

It's more alive than the GBA.

Consider this: Used PS2 sections in Gamestops still get frequent browsing and actually have products ship between stores.

GBA games have so little demand that they're just dumped in a bin that sits behind the counter (sometimes up to 2 bins full of them), where they're lucky to have a customer browse once a month. There's no demand between stores for them, but since some models of the DS still play them there is still a chance they'll be picked up. (This leads to some great finds if you're willing to ask to look through them)

The PS2, while not getting much new stuff, seems less "dead" and more "stagnant," as you can still pick new consoles up and there are still a few places with a small section devoted to it.

That would make a copy of SotC worth about $6,100.00 USD. Probably a bit of an overestimate. Good game though.
More exact estimate, Gold runs at about 29 USD per gram. a CD runs at roughly 15 grams So right about 420$ give or take.

i have a ps2, and as i browse through best buy or wal mart, i'm disappointed to see that the only games that are out are wrestling games and hunting/fishing games (at least in the stores i've been in). The ps2 is a great console, and gave us many great games that flourished into series that have evolved into the new gaming consoles. i understand that the new consoles take precedence over past gen consoles for many legitimate reasons, but has there been a complete drop in interest in the ps2? has the ps2 been turned into a gaming system of the past where the only good games can be found at used game stores?
you're looking at this all the wrong way.

consider the advantages:

you can size up games retrospectively using inummerable resources to help you find hidden gems, cult classics, rare imports of worth and solid gold hits collecting the very cream of those "great games" from a massive library never spending a dime on something that is not worth it.

you will spend far less dimes building up such a splendid and choice collection.

thrift game shopping is (imo) kinda fun. its great when you nab something rare and/or great for next to nothing (also, if its needed you can easily justify the hobby to anyone you might need to on the grounds of low cost :p )

if the games are found and kept in good nick and are the "cream" the value of many may even increase damatically with age and even good copys of mainsteam hits can float around not far from their orginal price.

i have 9 consoles going back to the SNES. my collection of PS1 (mostly 2D) games alone is now worth a fortune, hardly any of them cost me more than £2 and they are all great games to play because i won't buy one that isn't.
I think you hit the nail on the head there. I love my PS2 and still look out for classic games to play. I once picked up Shadow of the Colossus, Persona 3 + 4 and Silent Hill 2 for £10 (and they were in damn good nick too). The fact that new games are so think on the ground they don't warrant their own section in a store is natural, if regrettable, but the cheapness and availability of great games is an absolute plus.

Ten Year Plan...Sony did it and did it well.

PS2 is my favorite system (own over 300 games for it) but it's dying-dying...

I wouldn't complain. It had a long run. Not many game consoles... actually, I'm hard pressed to think of a console that still sold in stores even while it's replacement was on sale.

I currently have 2 ps2's under my desk with no use for them at the moment. yes, the ps2 is history, but oh what a glorious history it is. nobody is going to look back on the 'greatness' of the gamecube or the xbox, but few will forget the golden days of the ps2 generation.

I do this all the time. Bought my Saturn at goodwill for $10, Lunar 2 for SegaCD with box and manual for $2, and that's just the best finds. I played my copy of Lunar 2 until my SegaCD died, then sold it on ebay for $56. I'll even search pawn shops. You'd be amazed what you can find there.

I was including the weight of the game-case as well as the disk which pushes the total to about 4.3 ounces. ;)

Of course it doesn't get any games now, it's from the previous generation. If you want to buy games for it, go online or check a more game-oriented shop. That's where the PS2 game market has moved. I have two PS2s and use one whenever it's too much of a hassle to get an emulator to work properly.

That's saying something. I played PS2 games religiously, and I'm still finding new games that I never played back in its day. That's a console with an awesome backlog.

That's probably not something I'd boast about, online or off...

OT:
I'd say, if you've got the cash, get the PS2 memory card that can USB to your PC.
It's worth the investment if you're worried about loosing saves.

mine was hooked up when I got home from college for spring break but I only managed to use it to watch the original Night of the Living Dead. Sadly I was too preoccupied with my month and a half premie niece and Steelseries.com's awful, awful customer service.

It may be true that the Ps2 is dying, but just think of the legacy it left behind. Hell, I still have one literally less than a foot away from me, I play it more often then I play my 360 or Ps3 and I got it when it first came out. It was just a solid well built console that had an amazing game library.
