First of all, I partially agree with your view. I live in NI and I find that the two communties differences are few, and I work with people from the other side of my community and have made great friends with them.
Some things were achieved through the troubles though, such as Civil Rights and fairer allocation of housing and jobs if this person knows the history, I'm sure he can explain to you why he feels so strongly about the topic. I agree with you in that in the more recent years that there hasn't been anything of major achievement.
Don't just dismiss it because innocent people died - there were also people who died for thier beliefs maybe they were extreme, but they believed they were doing what was right.
Secondly, and more to the point, I have never been threatened for my beliefs, but I tend to keep them to myself unless you are really close to the person and they are of a decent intellectual competence and aren't slaves to old ways and old hatred.
