Now, we all know how big World of Warcraft has become, and no other game has reached the population to create the worlds first online superpower besides it. But the new Star Wars: The Old Republic, seems to me like the kind of game that could be a competitor. It might work due to the huge Star Wars fan base, but would it have enough snuff to get a massive amount of players, or would it fail in the competition just like so many other games have?

Given that WoW has yet another expansion, and this one making some of the biggest changes yet, I don't think anything will topple it for a while. Old Republic will probably be good (although people said the same about SW: Galaxies which didn't do so well) but it won't beat WoW.

Star Wars certainly does have the fanbase to potentially beat out WoW, but I'd say Guild Wars 2 is the bigger contender.

Honestly, I don't think anything less than World of StarCraft has the power to stop the beast that WoW has become.

Most people that play MMOs today started in WoW. And most of those people are still playing WoW.

People may leave to go to another game early or a little later but most MMO players go bac to where there friends are.

I should know, I have tried leaving WoW for other games for years now. In the end it is hard to not play a game where you know so many people.

Wow won't be stopped. The sheep will keep following to the slaughter... The slaughter of their social life.

Didn't we say WoW might have met its match when Lord of the Rings online went live? I doubt this will hurt WoW too much.

I agree GW was at least for some time The RPG after WOW and they seem to be developing interesting new settings for the genre.

A couple things can stop the old republic, feel free to add to the list:
1. uncomfortable Gameplay mechanics
2. Graphics requiring high-end computers to get above 30fps
3. Clone uprisings

ehh idk if it'll kill it, but they are trying some different stuff

*star wars fanbase
*especially kotor fanbase
*bioware fanbase
*full over dialogue/story driven mmo

those are just some of the more general things i could think of that could attract people to TOR or away from WoW

regardless, hopefully both games can fit without having to have one beat each other out.

No, WoW hasn't met it's ptential match. It's met a competitor, that will do well, granted, but won't kill it.
I know this seems like a bad comparisom, but bare with me. Compare Gears of War to Halo. Both on the same platform, both do very very well. I mean, people still know and love GoW, but Halo's just an unstoppable juggernaut. It already had two games when GoW1 was released, so it had the advantage, and still does, of simply an already massive fanbase.
WoW has the main game and two giant expansions, and it's been going for five years. Granted, Gears of War didn't have a huge fanbase before release, but still. It will not beat WoW. It may be very successful, but it will not beat the most money-making game ever.

I doubt it.....Ive seen it....looks super stupid cheap and they hardly ever show anyone else in the MMO part of the game....its more of KoToR on the PC....with ships....and PvP

I immediately knew what this thread was by merely glancing at it:

TOR will have a huge fanbase. WoW will still have a bigger one. It will be a larger niche than, say, DDO or LotRO, but niche in comparison to WoW.
