While I don't think it will kill WoW I do believe that it has the parietal to carve it's own type of MMO out that could appeal to WoW players and RPG players. From what I heard, the game is very story driven. It supposedly has a different storyline for each class and faction based stories on each planet. I am not talking about little quests, I mean a story. Those things that take god knows how long to complete. Add to that the full voice acting and things like space battles there is a lot going for it. Something for story driven people.

I refer you to this video:
[a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/1906-The-Future-of-MMOs"]This man speaks the truth![/a]

I think that Wow is just too big to quietly go down. Its fanbase is not going anywhere and although their is a lot of star warts love how many of them are going to out of nowhere start playing an MMO?

They said that about Age of Conan and Warhammer Online.

Personally, I'm almost sure TOR will be one big fail. It's nothing but a standard MMO dressed like star wars and fully voiced. Not nearly enough to be a wow killer.
True. Indeed, very true. Though, TOR may be a failure, I'm sure it will bring innovation to the genre, and maybe expand it.

Guild Wars unlike AoC and Warhammer, is NOT subscription based, and just there, I've appealed to almost everyone. We're still to see any gameplay footage of Guild Wars 2, but if it's just a bit better than it's predecessor, WoW IS gonna get competition.

It will take some of the fanbase but WoW is just ridiculous in the amount of people who play it, I think it will be a serious contender and a great alternative but I cannot see it truly destroying WoW

Star Wars certainly does have the fanbase to potentially beat out WoW, but I'd say Guild Wars 2 is the bigger contender.

I agree GW was at least for some time The RPG after WOW and they seem to be developing interesting new settings for the genre.

No. Loyal subscribers have made WoW too big to topple. Even now people still chase that dragon, years and years away from when they'd started. I'd almost wager that the only real hope could be Guild Wars 2, since the only thing that will murder WoW once and for all would either have to be Blizzard itself or a free option that is at least as addicting.

This all the way. Some people made quite a few points. the free subscription which is keeping peopel away from WoW. The fact thats it's -mostly- (YES! mostly...) not a clone of WoW. It's a game with 5-6years of Lore like WoW was when it launched. The fanbase of Gw1 was at its peak almost 2/3 of WoW's players at this point.

SO yes, I'm a fanboy, and this will be my only game i'll ever be fanboy about. But G is the best competitor when its launches somewhere next year.

No, I don't believe that any M.M.O.R.P.G. will have the money and experience to beat world of warcraft.

I think Guild Wars 2 is a serious contender to topple the throne of WoW for the following reasons.

-It isn't subscription based, it works on expansion packs and some in-game purchases.
-It's promised to change a lot of stale MMORPG elements, with dynamic combat and dynamic quests being the highlights .. now you won't stand there smacking 10 rabbits for five minutes to complete your job qualification quests list.
-It looks way better than WoW graphics wise (WoW graphics are outdated already).
-They already have experience from Guild Wars and a good fanbase.

No. I'm even going to put my bias aside and really think this one over and say still: No.

It's not going to topple WoW.

There's alot of issues I saw a few people bring to light a little further up the page and that's going to hurt them.

You may look at WoW and go "Eggh graphics" but you know what? EVERYONE or close to Everyone can play it because of that. And when you're looking at the back of your character and trying your hardest to down a boss and using all the skills you can muster, you lose yourself in it and they just don't matter anymore.

Star Wars looks spectacular but I'll bet alot of people are going to have issues in encounters and the high end investors into their PC's will be quickly segregated from those who have devoted less time to their PC's.

Star Wars will likely thrive alongside WoW, you forget one is a much more Sci-fi oriented affair and the other is Medieval fantasy. They can both fill a niche.

Can not judge this until Star Wars releases. But, knowing recent history.. Star Wars has a high failure chance. We've been fooled from new MMOs since 2005, theyve all had hype and promisses and none have went on to be a good game.

WoW won't be killed it will die of old age eventually however it will not lose to another MMO.

SW TOR will do well, at the very least in sales since it has a huge fanbase already from both the movies fans and KotOR fans, it also brings some great new things like story and full voice acting, choices, etc. .. it will probably be a better game than WoW but it won't kill it at most it will equal it. And lets face it, if anyone can beat Blizzard it sure as hell might be Bioware and if any franchise can beat warcraft ( except for Starcraft ) it might as well be Star Wars.

Also people shouldn't argue that this is bioware's first MMO since WoW was blizzard's first and look how that turned out :p ...

As for Guild Wars 2, I haven't followed its development but I don't think it stands a chance, the first one was mediocre at best and the only reason people ever left WoW for it was the subscription fee, and a large number of those people actually returned to WoW later since Guild Wars sucked compared to it, if GW had a subscription fee like WoW it wouldn't have lasted half a year.

If GW wasn't successful how come it had a couple of expansions and generated enough funds to make an ambitious sequel that plans to kill many boring MMORPGS cliches that infest WoW and all the other MMORPGs cloning it ... GW was very successful and popular as far as i know .. not "WoW successful/popular" but compared to all other MMORPGs it was one of the best and most successful.

i think there are 2 big players coming in to topple WoW with their massive fanbases that being the already mention SWTOR and the 40k mmo seriously these two have huge fanbases infinitely more loyal than any Blizz fans.

And so the list begins:
Lord of the Rings Online - Failed
Warhammer Online - Failed
Age of Conan - Failed
Aeon - Failed
Old Republic - ?

As for the MMO wars, I seriously think that WoW will rain supreme.. untill the Warhammer 40k MMO comes out (If its done well that is)

Off Topic: How awesome does Warhammer 40k: Space Marine look =D

Edit - Forgot to add something to the list
Star Trek Online - Failed

The Old Republic has the potential to topple WoW - mainly because it's attracting people like me who normally hate Mummorpergers - but it's certainly not going to do it immediately.

The difference with The Old Republic is that they're really trying to do something different; everyone else just copies WoW and ends up not as good because Blizzard have been going for a lot longer.

But the way they're handling quests, and the fact that it's fully-voiced? That's really something, and they're trying to move things forward in the genre.

GW2 will be the greatest competitor not only because it will offer players an alternative to the classic nuker/tank/healer formation but for a lot of reasons: the "downed" condition, the constantly changing world, the ability to create a unique and ever changing storyline for your character etc...
From what i've read looks like they will also drop the classic quests you know kill 0/10 ogres and add more dynamic ones.
I can't wait.

Totally disagree. TOR looks great, but because of it's art direction not it's massive texture sizes.

I can see the system requirements being pretty low. I signed up for the beta, and the first thing they do is scan your system so that they can gauge performance-levels and optimise the game appropriately.

World of Warcraft is not going anywhere.

Age of Conan did not kill WoW.
Warhammer Online did not kill WoW.
Champions Online did not kill WoW.
Startrek Online did not kill WoW.
Lord of the Rings Online did not kill WoW.
Tabula Rasa did not kill WoW.
EverQuest II did not kill WoW.
Dungeons & Dragons Online did not kill WoW.
Pirates of the Burning Sea did not kill WoW.
Aion did not kill WoW.
All Points Bulletin did not kill WoW.

None of the above even made a dent in WoW's subscribers as most of the people who left to try them out kept up their WoW subscription even if they were not actively playing.

Nothing is going to kill WoW, its subscriber base is far too large, its system requirements are far too low, its too easily accessible and its highly addicting and locks people in with Social cement.

As much as I would love to see a WoW killer, it just aint gunna happen, as the majority of WoW's player base really are not interested in other MMO's.

What SWToR will do, is kill a lot of smaller alternative MMO's
