So, I am a huge fan of Zero Punctuation (seriously, who isn't) and I usually agree with Yathzee's views, at least in terms of what I look for in a game like good gameplay and story.

Recently however, I have been noticing that whenever I start a new game or pick up one I haven't played in a while, I start seeing flaws or annoyances that I wouldn't have noticed before. After watching ZP for the last 3 years I start seeing games the way Yahtzee would, finding all these flaws that wouldnt have mattered to me before. I dont really know if this is a good or bad thing though I find it harder to get into games i normally would have liked.

So, my fellow escapists, have any of you noticed this change in perception as well? Even without ZP's influence, have you ever changed how you view, play, and enjoy games?

EDIT: I don't think I was clear:( I meant that my initial analysis of games has been influenced by ZP, I don't make decisions based of what he says. I often disagree with him.

I have had the same reaction, in fact I have been buying less and less games because of it. I need to start spending my disposable income again.

No, Yahztee has never changed my opinion of a game. Honestly, when I play a game, I always only notice one thing, whether I like it nor not, and that's the gameplay. If a game has a good story, it'll stand out to me, (like Legacy of Kain(i found very interesting)) but, generally all I look for in a game, is good gameplay. If there's that, I can easily immerse myself in it. and nothing Yahtzee has ever said, or will ever say, will change it.

Kinda. I learned that even though Space Marines are God-damned cool, they're like salt: use too much, and you get a heart attack.

On another note, he helped me find one of my favorite songs.

Eh, I'm a programmer and amateur game designer, so I notice flaws and odd design choices by habit anyways. Yahtzee has never caused me to change my opinion on a game that I had already formed an opinion for.

I don't always agree with Yahtzee, in the end he's a single person with his own opinion, opinions that prey heavily on the complaints most people usually have.

But damn, if he isn't funny I'm a rodeo clown.

The vast majority of games are either terrible in design or in storytelling. ZP only confirmed this for me. So, no Yahtzee has not ruined gaming for me. Only buying 2 or 3 games a year makes it easy to pick out the very best.

Well i came to agree no opinion can be a score. So yes, also Moviebob has taught me all reviews come down to what you want in a movie(and the oscars are a joke!)

Or you could give it to me, I need to pay for college. JK ^_^

OT yeah I've had the same reaction I guess, but Yahtzee has also expanded my view of games. Before I first saw Yahtzee, I was a Nintendo buff all the way. The only games I would ever play, ever, were Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc, and I would hail these as the best games ever. Yahtzee has opened my mind to judge all games equally, because I never know where I'll find a gem. He's also introduced me to the Horror genre, which is now my favorite genre. So he's had as much positive effect on me as negative effect.

He sort of introduced me to the broader gaming culture and industry, so I like to think he's just made me more a discriminating consumer.

I've actually gone out and gotten games that he blatantly disliked after seeing his reviews of them, I enjoyed them too.

I've always tended to notice the annoying bits. I've long ago gotten into the habit of researching the annoying bits before buying a game, since there are certain types of annoying bits I have a hard time looking past.

Such as I skipped Assassin's Creed I because of... well just about everything Yahtzee found annoying in his review (it really was a pretty good summation of the complaints I found in the Amazon user reviews). I picked up GTA IV prior to seeing his review for it and my list of shit I found irritating is pretty damn close to his.

Even my most favorite games in the world (Dark Knight 2: Jedi Knight and Serious Sam: First & Second Encounter), I can point out many things that irritate... at least some of the time.

Yeah this happened to me, but it isn't a bad thing imo. It just helps you appreciate the good games even more.

I found exactly the same thing with films when I started doing Media Studies at school. It bothers me as well as it can kind of get in the way of just enjoying the thing I'm watching/playing/reading/whatever.

I've always been a nitpicking *****, but that's what happens when your first two games are masterpieces like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Ico, the only time Yahtzee has ever influenced my choice was when he gave a positive review to Arkham Asylum, a game I was sure was going to suck. I figured, well if everyone in the world loved it, including a person who usally isnt in that category, it must be good. And it was.

Honestly its good to listen to reviewers but you should never base an entire opinion of one persons review, me I like slow games with good pacing and clever puzzles (Ico, Amnesia, Silet Hill) but I'm also not above the standard shooter(Anything by Valve).

Its all about what appeals to you, not what appeals to some other person.
