Want to know why no one likes these games?

Yahtzee.

People follow that guy like a god. Pay attention and spend enough time here and soon you'll begin seeing a cult.
Yahtzee's hilarious, but you shouldn't pay attention to most of his negative reviews, especially on those games unfortunate enough to lie in genres outside of his preferences (JRPGs, fighting games, pretty much anything Nintendo's made this millenium), since these games have virtually no hope of being liked or recommended by him. He's not a reviewer, he's a critic, and a damn good one. Don't pay much heed to his negative rants, but whenever he goes against the critic mould and says something positive about a game, you'd better sit up and pay attention, because most of those games are (in my own opinion, of those I've played, even if they're outside MY preferred genres) good.

Personally, I don't hate something because it's popular. In fact, rarely do I actually hate a game. I may not LIKE the game, I may not ever want to play it again, but I rarely actually hate it just because it doesn't suit me. Hate implies that you believe it should be destroyed, which is a ludicrous stance on anything as subjective as gaming choice.

Even more ludicrous is hating things because they're popular. It's just silly. And it's every bit as conformist as liking things because you're told to like them. I only like games I genuinely like, and whether my interests coincide or diverge with the mainstream, I couldn't care less. Last time I checked, I played games for personal amusement, not to appease a culture.

Oh, Fire Daemon and flatearth, you say that it's Yahtzee that's causing the hate, but that doesn't explain Assassin's Creed. Yahtzee liked that game.
To be honest, I haven't seen much Assassin Creed hate, I've seen some people dislike certain aspects of the game (the same as Yahtzee, but most games are disliked for the same reasons) but I haven't seen much hate for it.

However when Yahtzee gives a game a bad review (for example Oblivion), a lot more people seem to dislike it. The same with SSBB, Halo 3, Jericho, Turok, The Witcher and Army of Two. After these reviews, it seemed like many more people disliked these games then they did before.

It's because you need to take Yatzee's reviews with a pinch of salt. If you believe everything he says then your going to hate every game in the universe. I like (or don't dislike) all of the games listed above.

Well, I have to say that the Valve community really owns these forums. In a good way though.

By sheer nature people who are in that community are opposed to the business tactics of Blizzard, EA, and other large producers.

I don’t know if that is completely down to Yahtzee, I played Turok and Jericho long before he reviewed them and found them to be terrible games. I'll admit to having never played the others yet but then again I don’t have an opinion either way on them.

The hype side of it is interesting as the more hype the better the review scores, so when its not perfect people feel pissed off. I tend to ignore hype, and very rarely read reviews of games; I trust my own judgment for better (Fallout 1&2, Hitman both bought on a whim) or worse (FFOW, Condemned 2).

I’m very much looking forward to Fallout 3 but that is because I loved 1&2, I know I will be disappointed but in some ways I don’t care as I am expecting it to fail to meet my expectation.

I think you need to take all reviews with a pinch of salt. Especially if the website or magazine is being paid for by a specific company or organisation.

Yes. Look at the DLC situation for Orange Box (well, TF2) on XBMP and PSN. Valve seem pretty pissed because they have no choice but to charge players for updates and content (ie. a part of Valve's superb relationship marketing)... imagine EA being pissed off at making more money out of their customers.

Halo fans didn't seem to mind how disappointing Halo 2 was. Is the gaming market really that easy to fleece? The ending of that goddamn game should've freeze-framed, faded to grey and read "Don't miss Halo 3 next year, £49.99 from all good retailers". The money grabbin' bastids.

I'm gonna have to side with the theory that "everyone here's riding on Valve's cock." Yahtzee's funny and all, but I don't think he's got that kind of charisma. If he has any kind of influence here, it has to do mostly with his own Valve cock-riding.

No, I don't think so at all. I mean Half-life is incredibly popular, and we all gush about it here without restraint. Maybe people pick on Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed especially here because we're all ZP fans. I know I, personally, haven't picked on these games, but I haven't complimented or raved about them either.
Really? There are people out there who change their judgment of a game just because Yahtzee said it was so? Then this world has no hope.

I have to agree with the OP here, a lot of people seem to do this. This is really proven in the thread about Which game you would like to erase from history. Pretty much all of you had to have one of the Halo games in the name. Then we would have missed out on a great story between human and alien relationship and a really good shooting experience.

Half Life was a different type of popular. It was more for the people who didn't like Halo. The colors blinded them. In saying that I am playing through Half Life 1 at the moment for the first time and I love it. But I still love Halo 3.

Just because a reviewer says something bad about a game or just because the game is also backed up but millions of bleeting lambs doesn't meant it should be disliked again. I've always been annoyed with this and now that I find out someone else has been, I might as well express my annoyance without sounding like an ignorant bastard.

Or maybe I still do... :p

PS: If anyone could send me a PM about what to do next in HL? I'm stuck. I'm up to a point with an electrified flooded floor after going up an elevator. Thanks ^_^

Hating something because it's popular is the act of teenagers and wankers.
Hating something because the game is a pile of crap that still gets attention is perrectly valid.

A popular game is a game that everybody knows about. If everyone knows about a game, a lot of people form opinions of it. Some are remotely excited (Montagues), while cynics remain cynical(Capulets).

Then, hype persuades the Montagues to become very excited about the game, and Capulets, when they are told things like "best game ever," become even more cynical. So, there's a dichotomy created where there becomes a league of people so dedicated to a game that they will defend all its flaws, as well as an equally-violent group of cynics, so determined not to like the game, they will ignore its good qualities.

As for why you've noticed that people around the Escapist are like that, it's probably because games like Halo 3 are very popular outside the demographic of "hardcore gamers." So, when the people most excited are people who don't have a great knowledge of video games, the naturally opposing group is the people who do know a lot about them and are the kind of people who'd, you know, sign up an account to a gaming culture website to post on forums...

Well, hope you enjoyed my little theory.

It doesn't cover everything, because every game and the situation around it is different. And, obviously, there are lots of shades of grey between the two groups, but I think that kind of thing happens a lot.

I think it may be that super popular games can never live up to the hype they deliver. If I see a review or trailer, I'll take a look. But when it comes to gameplay, I look to the great ZERO PUNKUATION!

Like Haze. Story was ok at best, but the gameplay was "shooter like Halo." Well, Halo was ok, so I'm going for it. And Haze lived up to what I exspected. I would recomend it to people purly for the coop.

I didn't think Army of 2 would be good, so I never got it. Then I did cuz I was at the store and it turned out to be great.

Assasin's creed was epic. Repedditive but fuck I like faffing about on the rooftops of ancient civilizations!!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with hating something because it's popular as long as it is something which can negatively influence the free market. Mediocre popular games fall into this category.

I loved Morrowind and its expanisons, however I never finished it, i got about 80% through and my PC died and I could never face it again.
Always get a bit ranty when TES is mentioned, but here I go:

I'd imagine it was closer to 10%.

I logged over 2000 hours into Morrowind (between the original and GoTY edition on xbox) and I think I only finished MAYBE 90% of the content.

I actually liked Oblivion. Even bought it for the PC when I couldn't even play CS 1.6 just to be content to read the manual and stare at the map. Later I bought a 360 because it meant I could play it more soon than saving extra for a good computer

I admit it was a HUGE step down from Morrowind. But people who loved Daggerfall felt Morrowind was a let down. Seems since Arena it's been a gradual decline, though I like to think Morrowind was happy middle-ground for hardcore and still slightly accessible. I'd honestly be playing arena right now but it crashes on me every 15 minutes and I'm not good with dosbox. You can get it free from their website if your interested in the truly hardcore rpg. (I spent over an hour trying to get out of the first town it's so huge!)

P.S. It's been awhile, but I think if you just use sneak (even if nobody is around) you wont get caught by the super guards most of the time.
