Second, eh im not sure i care either way. As stated above if its good ill check it out regardless of its popularity. Non mainstream things have the same fanboys as mainstream things, its all relative.

But at least fanboys are lesser in numbers, besides, the undesirables are less of a challenge then fanboys.

I don't hate mainstream games. I hate mainstream plots and characters. You know exactly what I am talking about, the cookie cutout heroes and villains that have the personality of a lamp post and dispense smartass one liners and cheesy dialogue. I just play, watch, and listen to what I like. Whether it's mainstream or not is something I generally don't give a flying ass about. If it's mainstream, it means I can talk about it with other people. Which is fun. I enjoy the company of other people. If not, oh well. What're you gonna do?

Things that are mainstream are so because people like them.

I see no reason to dislike something for it. Which I why (music example) I get especially irked when some so-called hardcore fans decide to stop supporting an artist because they had a big hit and have become somewhat mainstream.

Sometimes I catch myself hating mainstream stuff because it's in the mainstream. Though I do not like Halo at all because I find every game to be lacking in everything. I hate all mainstream music because it all sucks to me. Probably the most mainstream thing I listen to is either Depeche Mode or Kraftwerk.

Personally, I don't hate anything because it's mainstream. I do however hate how people treat it like it's the best game ever because it's mainstream. To fit in with the cool crowd, if you will. I was even guilty of this when I was about 13 or so.

Point being, mainstream games aren't bad. They're of good quality for the most part, not broken, and at least original in some way. It just depends if it's your cup of tea or not. For instance, I think GTA IV is to samey, Halo is lacking in good singleplayer, and Gears is cheesy as hell. However, I know people who like that kind of stuff. That's why I loved Bioshock. I'm a sucker for great setting and story. So, liking certain mainstream games doesn't mean that you're an idiot or anything, it's just what you prefer. Holding the game like it came from the hands of God himself, well, that's a different story.

OP: Personally I think the only form of mainstream gaming is the Wii, because as pointed out numerous times before everyone can play. Non-casual gaming tends to be a non-mainstream hobby.
I don't see how games themselves can be considered mainstream, Genre's can.. but not the games themselves.

The mainstream opinion on Halo is meh, not that it's good. It might have sold well and had a lot of hype but ask any forum apart from Bungie.net what they think of Halo and they will tell you that it sucks. I remember when Halo 3 came out there was a lot of hate for it on boards dedicated to other 360 games such as Gears of War and CoD4. As it stands you are going against the 'main' stream by saying that you play and enjoy Halo 3.

I play good games most of the time and usually it's the good ones that go mainstream. Although recently I've only been concerned with my old Gameboy games such as Golden Sun and LoZ: Oracle of Seasons/Ages. Right now I playing fairly non-mainstream games (now anyway) but when CoD6 comes out I'm going to pick that up because it will most likely rock. I don't care if everyone else is playing it, I just want a good game.

You like what you like. Sure, a lot of mainstream things are retarded. However so be hating something just because it is mainstream does not make you a non-conformist but a tool.

True, although by that logic you are stating that fanboys are not undesirable... thats puzzling to me.

Depends on what type of fanboy your talking here, i.e. im a fanboy to Sony, but im a fanboy because Sony is quality, people may argue it, but i prefer Sony.

Now other fanboys such as CoD or Halo fanboys (I'm not attacking the 360 here, just there aren't many fanboys on the PS3, and if they are, there french so what can you say?) for example are the ones who shout "NOOB, I FUCKED YA MOTHER, AND SHE WAS SHIT" as loud as they can, THEY are both fanboys and undesirables.

To cut it all down, some fanboys are a mixture of both.
