I do have a hard time, yeah. Somehow being evil or 'rogue' in a game that allows it always feels so pointless. I never really see a reason to fuck up everyone's day. Somehow it gives me less lulz too.

I don't like being evil in Fallout 3 mainly because when you are, 3 Dog hates you and I like 3 Dog praising me every now and then on the radio!
That's why I put a grenade in Three Dog's pocket while he was sleeping. And the Brotherhood didn't even care. But that's as far as I went with my evil playthrough. Didn't hold my attention.

They should have made it possible for Jack to become a psychopath (cackling laughter etc.), but as implemented it was impossible for me to justify harvesting them with the character I was playing.
Well if you do so, Tenenbaum goes batshit insane at the end basically saying you're a psycho and all that.

Slightly. I alway find myself thinking "That's not evil, that's being an ass." like in a bioware game where you save the citizen then extort them for money yourself, that's not evil, that's just being an ass.
I thought there was a great example of evil in the first InFamous game when you had the option of charging the cops or hiding in the crowd and inciting a riot. It didn't seem that "evil" it actually just seemed like common sense.

I used to find it hard to be evil in games, and real life. I was raised to be good, but it's hard to be so when so many people act like a dick towards you. I've come along a ways though. I have quite a sadistic humor I've been told the last few years. And the attitude I've taken on of not giving a fuck helps.

I start evil. If a game can make me care enough to stop and turn good, I consider it a well written game. Besides, it gives my character a more interesting arc. I had no issue dismembering the little sisters on sight in Bioshock, but hell if I was going to be a little bit rude to one of my crew in Mass Effect.

Only in games that make me care about the characters, such as Bioware games, since that's their forte. Most other times, especially in games that shoehorn moral choices in, I couldn't care less. I'll dice up entire towns and sentence characters to eternal damnation in Fable II, simply because I couldn't GIVE less of a toss about them. Except the dog. That damn dog was too cute.

I can do most evil things, but I always have a hard time being a prick when talking to someone who isn't. It's much easier for me to skip the conversation and just blow their head off.

The problem here is that most developers don't seem to be able to create a truly evil character, so instead of creating an evil character they create someone that seems more mentally unstable than evil.

I personally can't be evil most of the times, since I'm the nice guy in real life, i like to keep it that way in games. I probably would be evil more times if the characters didn't have the above stated problem.

Generally in games that run on "black and white" theres really no reason to be evil other than for the LUL'Z, because otherwise it doesnt make alot of sense in universe, Like fallout 3 or even Mass effect

aomthing like Fallout NV however, sure there is a very obvious evil choice...but sooooo many shades of grey in between

The only evil act I've ever been truly unable to perform was harvesting Little Sisters. I've done just about everything else I can think of, up to and including wanton slaughter of random people for no reason whatsoever.
My feelings exactly. The way the first one crawls back and cowers is way too realistic, and the girls have suffered enough as it is. I'll be heroic and the game will be harder for it, which makes victory all the sweeter.

That said, I have actually played through it ONCE (of about five times) and harvested. I just didn't really watch...
I could have beared that, if only they didn't make you look her in the eye.

Going on what some people have said around here and what that chaotic stupid article analysed, I don't feel any satisfaction playing "Evil" characters for the simple reason that after 10 minutes I notice I'm not actually playing evil, not the cool kind anyway, instead, I'm playing some cartoon villian who does crap just because it's mean and because he can and - no, actually? I'm playing a thug. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and notice that I'm being manipulated by some actually evil character who was playing me all along or something.

Take KOTOR for example (possible spoilers btw), you either are a shining beacon of good and sugar and flowers or a thug, that's it, no palpatine planning, no plotting, none of that stuff that made Revan that supreme badass who everyone feared because he was taking over the galaxy over tea while making it look easy while making long term plans for other events and shit, no, I'm just a saturday morning cartoon thug who gets a kick out of stealing some kid's candy in front of the cops so I can kill them too for the evulz.

I've pretty much given up on playing evil characters because I don't believe them, when I play good I can believe that's what my unstoppable paragon of good would do with his powers but when I switch to evil? fuck all that, I get to play a childish thug, the bully on the playground, I do all kinds of stupid things that are bound to backfire and compromise my position later unless I also kill everyone else because... why am I forced to do this stupid thing again? oh right, because developers can't think seem to think about what the evil actions of a character would be besides kicking a puppy because it's fun and clearly evil. Either that or they're scared of making evil something other than stupid because parents and politicians and their priest might take offense.

I hope at some point someone notices what they're doing and start making games that allow for more complex evil actions than those of a moody viking.

I tried in Fallout NV, but I just can't finish the Ceasar's Legion storyline... I usually go for Mr. House(Neutral-ish) or Yes-man(Neutral-Good)

Can't comment on Infamous in particular, as I've never played it, but overall? Yes, I have a hard time playing evil. Part of my reasons are hipster in nature, most are because I don't like bad people, even in fiction. My other, aforementioned reason is that a disturbing number of people seem to find it's "cool" to be a douche.

I kind of want to try it sometimes, then I don't. It's tough. Part of the reason is probably as stated by the OP, Yahtzee and many others. In games with morality systems, it tends to be ridiculously black or white. I can't stand being evil for the sake of it, at least. Being "evil" with a goal in mind, can be interesting. I don't believe in black/white morality because it doesn't seem realistic in the slightest.

I tried to be good in Black and White, but I always accidentally caused famines for my people.

OOPS.

In Fallout 3 I find it very hard to be evil. I can kill people indiscriminately with no problem, but I can't be mean or rude to them. It's a pretty bizarre dilemma.

Anyway, Smasher Carlos the cannibalistic hammer-wielding Mexican Courier is having a good time being evil in New Vegas, so that's okay.

I can't finish it either, but probably for different reasons.

General Oliver's guards keep blowing my limbs off with mines and shit, so I can't even kill him.

It also doesn't help that one of said guards has a broken AI so he just runs frantically about yelling vague threats.

I'm not the only one with this problem! Hooray! I've been trying to play Renegade Shepard for a long time! I even tried to model his face like Dr. House to make it easier for me! But then Tali showed up and I couldn't help but feel horrible for insulting her...

True, but that's just dialogue. Other than a (really crappy coming-out-of-nowhere) different ending and a little scolding, the only consequence is you get more Adam at first, and miss out on a few rewards later. Any and all NPCs treat you identically, not a single mission is changed. And unlike Infamous, you don't even get different powers.
Basically in Bioshock the good/evil axis only decides which ending you get, whereas in Infamous it determines how you are treated by the public, the colour of your electricity, and which of two powers you get at various stages. Immediate consequence, not just some random 'choice' that is no choice at all.
I agree with Yahtzee that allowing you to change good vs evil at every stage (in Infamous 2) is stupid though. Unless you're sabotating yourself there is no reason not to go 100% good or 100% evil.

As for Black & White... I started out good, but got sick of all the whining by my followers. Give them grain, they want more houses. Build houses, they want more fish. Enough already!

Outside of stealing, I tend to play a good guy, like you said the evil side mostly tends to be oh look I called everyone what fun I'm having, it just doesn't make sense to me.

I dont care about being evil, I cant be evil and I am not evil, I dont know why but I just cant be evil in any game...ever(Unless you HAVE to play a villain, eg. Prototype), I guess it reflects me and my personality...so its impossible for me to be evil.

Its a good thing.
