I've told this story before, to good reactions. It's worth repeating here.

Just after the release of Left 4 Dead 2, I was hacking my way through the mall in Dead Center with a samurai sword. My dad came in and saw the impressive new gore effects, the blood splattering the camera, the entrails dangling from my sword. I don't really care about the bloody effects, other than using them to judge whether a zombie's been hurt enough to go down and stop attacking. My dad noticed the blood and gore right away, and engaged me in a debate about the morality of killing scores of zombies.

"They're attacking me, dad. Of course it's ethical to kill them."
"What about the ones you're shooting at a distance? They haven't seen you yet."
"I'm justified attacking them, since all zombies are hostile monsters."
"Couldn't a game teach you the same values about, for example, Muslims?"

I was so speechless we sat there in awkward silence for a while, listening to the roars of zombies and screams of survivors. My dad's not a racist guy, but he just used a very awkward phrasing of an already awkward idea.
My dad did the same kind of thing with me (sans muslims). I was playing oblivion while also trying to have a debate on why it was right to kill these goblins.

Me "Because they will attack me!"
Dad "What about the ones who you just assume will attack you, you don't know what every goblin will do"
Me "Well I was told that these goblins were attacking this farm"
Dad "Who told you?"
Me "The Quest giver"
Dad "Why should you trust the quest giver more than a goblin?"

When I was younger my mum never liked any games I had which had violence in them and moan about them. Then one day I was playing Ratchet & Clank in my room when she came in and saw me playing it and said, 'aren't you a bit old to be playiny such a kiddy game' argh, damned if you do, damned if you don't :D

To quote my friend: "Video games can't tell stories."

He also once asserted a belief that "real" video games were bought in stores and "independent" games were all downloads...I facepalmed angrily.
I would have stopped being his friend right there. Not even kidding. You must have some patience.

You know, aside from most of my extended family (batshit crazy Irish Catholics. You see where that's headed), I don't get a lot of that. My parents are pretty cool with games, but don't really play them much. In fact, my mum (who is an English teacher) seems to enjoy hearing about some of them (Think Portal not Gears of War). Plus they've realised that it's the only thing my brothers and I will ever do together anymore.

But aside from my fortunately-fantastic family, I did once rant at a friend's friend about why games aren't inherently worse than other media (I was tipsy, I usually hate ranting at people). If you say "That's just for little kids" when refering to one of my favourite games (god bless Solid Snake), then you'll get shit for it, capiche?

My mom will see a game cutscene that's story driven and say "Oh just skip through that it's useless story stuff" No, it's IMPORTANT story stuff, thank you very much.

One of the girls in my writing class wrote her final paper on how video games are bad for kids. She pulled all the typical crap about them up in her essay. Needless to say, I red-penned the SHIT out of it before giving it back. :3

Maybe He's right and it's all a plot to keep a good goblin down.:)

OT:I had a class on Children's Literature and the topic of video games came around and the instructor asked what games taught me. I get rattled from being put on the spot like that and drop the ball like a champ. This prompts a girl to say that games teach you nothing. Luckily my more well spoken classmates shoot her down in 10 seconds flat.

*claps*
My dream has come true.

Ontopic

My aunt said that video games have no learning curve to it and are for little kids and losers.
Note that I was a star Hockey player at that time playing Call of Duty.

While I was in highschool, I wrote an eight paragraph essay about how God of War III, Manhunt, and GTA, (and other, extremely violent and controversial video games) were not to blame for the crimes that were pinned to them. My teacher refused to grade the paper and made me write another one on something else.
That's terrible. Absolutely terrible. I would have taken that to the school board.

I haven't come across "anti gamers" or anything like that, but I love explaining to people the depth some games have. The people I've talked to aren't hostile toward games, they just haven't realized that games are a good story telling medium. I love describing the depth of the stories and characters and easter eggs too.

"Yeah okay, but video games have done more harm than good."[/i] After which I pointed out the fact it's a medium that has something for everyone; it's more involving and engaging than film (which happens to be her career path of choice)\
I find it funny that someone in film would so easily dismiss video games.

I honestly think that really is a good question.
I mean you hear one side of the story and run for them to solve the "problem". Many games use this against us for making he guys we work for being the bad guys in the end.

[All I can really remember is a anti-video game article that I read in my school's newspaper. I wrote a letter to them responding to the arguments but I have yet to see it published. I still fucking have the file, too. Those bastards.
awwww, I wanna see it! D:
Be careful what you wish for...
* Slow clapping starts * Nice speech/letter, Do you by chance have the original article? I'd love to read it, What? Ignorance is the best form of entertainment after all.
Sorry, but that actually requires me to type up the entire article and I'm not willing to do that.

Let's just say for this thinking task a bunch of people basically summed up an argument of games being bad for you. Let's just say that. >.>
[sub]My mum's friend's daughter thinks games are bad for you because a t.v. report said so. My friend also thinks that all games are 'mindless killing.' I hope it wasn't Christianity that taught her that >.>[/sub]

The stories are completely unrelated.

Its true, and it did make me think. But at the time I was only thinking about how much easier it is to game without having a debate on ethical dilemmas. XD

I'm a christian and I like games, so it can't be that.
