Have Any Gaming Traditions?

Every year October comes around, and every year it makes me want to play Warcraft 3 while I listen to the School Of Rock soundtrack. I have no idea why this happens. I've also been having a hankering to play Brutal Legend again, and probably will. Before this, I used to play through Rampage once a year.

I was wondering if anyone else had their own little gaming-isms and what they are and why.

The closest I have is that I'll always play a game on normal difficulty first, then try the difficulty above it straight afterwards.

That's not really a unique tradition though.

Every time I have surgery or am on strong painkillers I play Mass Effect through.

And Friday night Halo 3 LAN games.

Whenever I watch a movie or read a book based on a video game, I must play the game afterwards (assuming I have access to both the game and system). For instance, after every viewing of Advent Children, I have started up a new save file on FFVII.

Whenever December rolls around I will play The Two Towers on the day it was released in theaters and beat it in one sitting and the next day I will play The Return Of The King and beat that in one sitting as well.

During the mid to end of October I will play horror games in the spirit of the Halloween Holiday.

Whenever I start a D&D session, I light a candle in the middle of the table. This candle is referred to as the "gaming light." While the gaming light is lit, all things said are IC.

My tradition is always returning to what is in my opinion one of the best games ever made, Baldur's Gate 2. It's so, so old and yet every time I have a fiddle around with it again I either discover something new or rediscover something I'd forgotten was in there and almost always end up pleasantly suprised. In fact, I might go play that again right now...

Every once in a while (usually 2-3 times a year), my buddy Fluffy and I will start a marathon (usually Sonic the Hedgehog) of retro systems. We've also recently started throwing the Mario games in there too! We're trying to track down the OLDSCHOOL Megaman games (for their respective systems) to have a marathon of those as well, but cart MM games are HARD to find locally... Webernets and me not so friendly.

Regardless of what games we end up marathoning, we ALWAYS end with the classic Sega game "Gain Ground," on the hardest difficulty it has, only AFTER we get ourselves good and buzzed (be it crushing a couple of six packs of Smirnoff Ice A PIECE, or just taking several shots of Jager, we get nice and buzzing first). We are yet to beat it like this, but it's fun as hell!

And at least ONCE a month, I have to see if I can best my record of beating Sonic the Hedgehog (ON A SEGA GENESIS) in under a half hour. So far, best time is 28:50someodd.

Any time I play Halo on XBL, I've GOT to be drunk. I play shooters better drunk.

Goldeneye 64 traditions/houserules (yes, it gets its OWN section):
It is always three on one (if 4 are playing), and I'm ALWAYS the one. There is ONE exception: No Radar is active if I have a teamate.
If playing Temple, it is set to Golden Gun (vice versa, as well). If I get the Golden Gun, I am not allowed to leave the room it's in (the lower room with the "skylight") to find the other players. I have to wait for them to come to me. PERIOD.
I am never allowed ANY form of body armor pickups.
In the Facility, I am not allowed in the vents.
I am not allowed to leave the Bunker if I have the Sniper Rifle on LTK mode.
On LTK, I am STRONGLY discouraged from picking up the RC-P90.
Usually, they like me to set my health to -100%, and theirs to +100%, just to make it that much harder on me.
Remote Mines (or Power Weapons)+Complex, I have to allow them 1/5 of their kills (3 kills for a 15 point game), or straight up 5 kills on a timed game.
I am not allowed to set Remote Mines on Archives at all.
We either play Library or Stacks, never Basement.
We only place Caves if they can beat me on EVERY OTHER LEVEL first.
I am not allowed to play as Oddjob.
Turbo Mode is ALWAYS active. If, God forbid, our "Jessie-Proofed" files get BALEETED, we must go through and REearn it before we can play MultiPlayer.
If we're playing the game over at my parents (remember, my brother AND I are both married with kids, but we DO go to our parents to play games from time to time), DK Mode and Paintball mode are REQUIRED by my da.

Even with all these rules in place, they still cant pull a victory for the night out of their asses. Oh sure, they'll beat me at two or three games, but the total score at the end of the night it's something around 7 to 3 (if it's a ten game set). And that's usually the consistant ratio (if it's more than ten games. 14:6, etc.).

And starting RIGHT NOW, I'm going to initiate all new gamer friends by making them play "Bible Adventures."

Yeah, I went there.

I think I'll rip this, but for a different purpose. Once the candle goes out, time to stop playing.

When I begin a new game on OoT, I must play through the Kokiri Forest blindfolded, collecting every possible rupee at least once and getting the items.

When I can name a character, they are Darth Pope without fail. If there aren't enough spaces, I'm D.Pope, or just Pope.

Friday night LAN sessions in Halo 3 and MW2 and either the same again on Sundays or a good ol' D&D session.

Around christmas every year, I need to complete Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Maybe because I got my N64 for christmas, and played those two games between there and new years. There's plenty more, I just can't be arsed to write them down.

Uh, used to have a goldeneye christmas tradition, but I haven't done that in years since my N64 broke.

I suppose if it counts, any time a new zelda comes out I'll play it in 7-10 hours shifts until I finish it. Thank christ it's usually during the holidays!
