For me i really wanted to get a job at the beginning of the summer and save up for a car but that failed. 20 job apps and 2 interviews, all ended in a fuck you letter. The problem is middle aged people who lost their jobs taking any work they can get, aka, shitty summer jobs i was applying for.

American 18 year old college freshman here.
1)I've had "jobs" before but they were all under-the-table no taxes paid on the money. Usually direct jobs like mowing someone's lawn, working for a store related to a religious charity, or landscaping on rich people's yards.
2)Any jobs that required an application, either said "We'll call you back later" or "The manager will get to you". The only time I actually met with a manager, it was because a friend worked there and convinced the manager to see me. We talked and he said he'd hire me if a spot opened up in the future. I guess it never did. Anyways, I applied for jobs alot during late junior HS year, tried a little that summer, and applied for jobs alot early senior year. I was a grade A student with something like a 3.85 GPA, a minimal amount of extracurricular work, available time, and the ability to easily learn things.
Eventually, I was just like "fuck it" and haven't applied for a job since.
3)Now I'm in college. But I don't wanna take a job during freshman year, so I'll look for a job sometime later. I'm currently a CS major, so I hear of technical jobs and internships, but they almost always require more skills than I currently have. Hopefully I'll have those skills by the end of this year or sometime sophomore year.
I guess I'll find a job eventually, but right now I'm college-focused.

Oh and remember this, most of the time it's not what you know, it's who you know. If you just happen to fucking excel in some area it will get you places, but most people I know who get employed are employed because they know someone who works at the place of employment.
holy shit you stole my identity right down to the cs major... I agree 100% with the who you know part to. Me and my friend both applied to the same store which had 3 openings, during the interview my friend found out his dad knew the manager so he got the job easy. the other two openings went to older people who got laid off from higher paying jobs.

I found this when looking for a job on my gap year. Employers have gotten lazy and don't want to train new staff any more it seems.

Yes, all of my local places aren't hiring, or are and are looking for someone with past experience.

WHICH I DON'T HAVE 'CAUSE I CAN'T FRICKIN' GET HIRED ANYWHERE! WTF! It's an endless and incredibly insipid loop.

I'm 18, and I've been trying to get a part-time job for the better part of two years. There just isn't anything.

My town is dead. The Auto Industry was big where I live, and we haven't recovered.

well since you are going to try and get a job in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) it is all about where you look.
some areas are not interested at all but few and far between there are job opportunities.

I am having this problem now. I had to leave my last job because it turned into a gossip mill of crap. and i was not being paid enough to deal with it.

all i can say is good luck and try EVERYWHERE! even at McDeamon (i like that name) minimun wadge is at 10.15$

I am also interested in where specifically. Mississauga, Oakville, Brantford?

That, and everyone is afraid of getting sued for any little thing going wrong. So, they're only hiring people that have proven they know what they're doing by doing it for a long time.

Nope, I've actually been picking and choosing from where I want to work. However, it's not anything great. They're all just shit part time jobs I use to keep up on rent for now. I haven't applied for a "serious" job yet

Some months I have tons of interviews, some I don't. I am currently in one of the 'don't' months.

Well I notice that my first job was easy to get. All I had to do was put in a resume that said some stuff, and I got the job, pretty much on the spot. Mind you, this was about 6 years ago.
EDIT: Assuming you have done nothing, blemish some stuff. (Lie, essentially)
If you EVER did volunteer work, even if it was at your school, then just throw that in.

I didn't really have to try to get my job. The apartment complex was short a groundskeeper for over four months, and I jumped as soon as the opportunity came up.
Though I had to quit a month or so in due to health reasons. So...

McDonald's wouldn't hire me because I answered the questions to the online interview too honestly.

chin up fellas. In terms of post college adventures, a CS major is a solid start.

Speaking from own experience anyway. I graduated with a CS degree in May and it took me about 3 months to get a job in IT. I also had no luck in getting experience-giving jobs or internships at all during my 4 years. A technology-related field is going to be at least somewhat easier finding work in.

I've got it pretty lucky I think. I'm currently in my second year at college while living at home. Currently, I'm working as an assistant instructor at my karate dojo. After more than six years of training, my Sensei offered me a monthly pay if I could start going 4 days a week to help out.

Well no, but that's because I'm still in university but as long as I pass I've definitely got a job. The government gurantees all medical students internships when they've graduated and therefore sweet cash-money (and shitty long hours).

To get a job, you need references.

To get a reference, you need a job.

It's a vicious circle that's left me unemployed since I was 19. I'm 22 now, and I haven't found a single fucking job. :\

I live in a student city in Southern England. The city as it is is stupidly small (roughly 3x3 miles). It's been impossible for me to find part time work, I have no previous work experience except working at a graphic design company for a few weeks.
